Julian, NDP take debate to TwitterResponse to Harper proroguing Parliament

mario [email protected]

Peter Julian once filibustered in the House of Commons for 13 hours.

A non-profit research group that strives to improve political participation said the Burnaby-New Westminster MP uttered 226,027 words in Parliament last year.

But now Julian’s been forced to limit his questions and criticisms to 140 characters or less.

That’s because the Conservative government has decided to prorogue Parliament, shuttering the House of Commons for an extra month until Oct. 16.

To keep alive the debate that normally happens during the daily question period when members of the government answer questions from the opposition, the federal New Democratic Party launched a virtual question period on Monday, posing their questions to ministers via Twitter.

Julian said distilling his thoughts to 140-character bursts isn’t easy.

mario [email protected]

Curiosity almost killed Naiya the cat.

Fortunately, all she got was the flight of her young life and a rushed trip to the vet for X-rays and a checkup.

Jenn Parker said she knew something was amiss Sunday morning when her normally gregarious and snooping Maine coon/Himalayan cross didn’t follow her husband’s every move around their Carnarvon Street apartment as he prepared for work.

At first she thought 16-month-old Naiya had somehow gotten herself stuck in a closet or cupboard overnight.

“We’re used to her getting into stuff,” said Parker.

But when Parker didn’t hear her soft cries, she started to worry.

It was while searching for her AWOL kitty that Parker noticed a corner of the screen door leading to their balcony on the 10th floor was slightly askew.

Normally the heavy sliding glass door is closed, said Parker, but the warm late-summer weather made the apartment stuffy.

When Parker didn’t see Naiya roaming the small balcony, she feared the worst.

“A sense of dread came over us.”

She looked over the railing dreading what she might see below.

“We just got that big sinking feeling.”

She sent an email to the condo manager then headed to the second floor where residents’ patios comprise the roof of the building’s pedestal down to the sidewalk.

One neighbour said a cat had oddly appeared in his condo but disappeared before he could corral it.

Parker hastily made some signs and walked around her Downtown neighbourhood calling Naiya’s name.

“I was just hoping someone had seen her,” said Parker.

TEXT AMENDMENTZoning Amendment Bylaw No. 7622, 2013

Purpose:

The purpose of the proposed bylaw is to amend text in Zoning Bylaw No. 6680, 2001 to permit lounge endorsement areas for breweries, distilleries and wineries as an accessory use to the manufacturing of liquor in industrial zoning districts and in commercial zoning districts through a rezoning process. The bylaw amendment would include:

a) Amending the defi nition of Liquor Primary Licensed Premises to include the accessory manufacturing of beer, wine or liquor for consumption within the establishment. This would then allow for ‘brew pubs’ to be approved through the rezoning process in commercial areas and for existing liquor licence facilities in commercial areas to add the accessory manufacturing component.

b) Allowing for lounge endorsement areas as a permitted use accessory to the manufacturing of liquor up to an occupant load of 30. Lounge endorsement areas over 30 people would not be permitted in industrial zoning districts.

c) The zoning bylaw text amendment would also include clarifying that the manufacturing of liquor is also permitted in the M1, M2 and M4 zoning districts.

Most people would cringe at the sight of workers tearing material from the roof of a beloved building, or scrambling along its facade chipping and troweling at cracks and fissures.

Julie Schueck couldn’t be more delighted.

The City of New Westminster’s heritage planner said workers laying a new roof on the former CPR railway station on Columbia Street at Eighth, repairing window frames and repointing the brickwork are encouraging signs that the historic building will spring back to life.

It had been occupied by The Keg restaurant since 1973, but in early January it closed and staff was laid off.

At the time, a spokeswoman for The Keg said the restaurant’s closure was necessary so it could assess the extent of repair and renovation work that would be needed at the structure, which was

built in 1899.Schueck said renovation

work that requires a permit on buildings listed on the city’s heritage register, like the CPR station, must be reviewed to ensure the building’s historic integrity isn’t compromised before it can proceed. But the current work being done on the station’s distinctive bricks and sloped roof doesn’t need a permit. The contractor has applied for a building permit for the interior though, to construct a new kitchen.

That’s good news to Ken Brookes and his business partner Brock Rodgers, who own the building. The lease they negotiated with The Keg in 2002 made the restaurant responsible for repairs and maintenance of the building in return for a below-market rate. But those repairs were never done and the restaurant closed just months after a higher pre-negotiated rate took effect for the remaining five

years of the lease.“They seem to be attacking the

deferred maintenance work on the building,” said Brookes. “It’s taken a while. We’re most pleased that they’re looking after the

building.”Brookes said he hasn’t been

advised what The Keg’s ultimate plans are for the building. Although the installation of a new kitchen implies it will

reopen as a restaurant, possibly subleased from The Keg.

Nobody from The Keg was available for comment.

Schueck said she’s keen to see the building occupied again.

“One of the biggest threats to heritage is demolition by neglect,” said Schueck of the old station, which the New Westminster Historical Preservation Society designated as the city’s most endangered heritage building.

The Hyack Square location makes it especially iconic, she added.

“It’s a very important building for New West,” said Schueck. “It’s an interesting little area with the old BC Electric and the Mc & Mc buildings, they all kind of speak to each other.”

And with the new Anvil Centre rising on the corner opposite the station, Schueck said the area gives a “sense of the past and future of New West in one intersection.”

“The challenge is getting the essentials,” said Julian at a press conference Tuesday at his constituency office. “With any issue you take the root, the really important core of what you’re trying to ask. I can get my message down to 140 characters when I need to.”

The virtual question period runs at the same time, and in the same manner as the real deal, explained Julian. The leader of the NDP and the Official Opposition, Thomas Mulcair, poses the first questions, followed by those from other NDP

MPs.On the initiative’s first day, 26

questions were posed but very few were answered, said Julian. Although one minister, James Moore, said he was busy driving and didn’t want to risk a traffic ticket.

Julian said the virtual question period has the potential to reach more people than view the live broadcasts of question period. He has more than 6,500 followers while Mulcair has almost 46,000. Add up all the followers of all the opposition MPs, multiply the number of times their questions

might get retweeted and the digits get bigger exponentially.

“That’s a significant number,” said Julian. “Not too many people have the time in the middle of the day to watch question period live.”

While the Twitter queries might be more political showmanship than a serious call to accountability, Julian said they may be a new way to get people involved in the democratic process.

“That brevity means people can follow a debate in just a few minutes,” said Julian. “We’re hoping it will become something people are seized with.”

When she got home, she searched the Internet for hopeful stories of cats surviving perilous plummets from high balconies. According to the website petwave.com, cats have survived falls from as high as 32 storeys.

Later that day, the neighbour on the second floor contacted her. He’d heard noises in the wall near his fireplace. He’d put some food near a hole he’d previously cut when he was doing some work. He had Naiya.

“She definitely looked freaked out,” said Parker, who loaded Naiya into her carrier for a hurried trip to the vet, which was just about to close for the day.

The X-rays showed no broken bones, and the vet’s examination turned up no internal injuries. Through the whole procedure, Parker said Naiya was nonplussed, cleaning and preening herself as if nothing had happened.

And whatever did happen, Naiya isn’t talking.

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADERTim Lewers repoints brickwork at the old New Westminster train station. The Keg restaurant that occupied the building for years closed earlier this year to allow for repairs to the historic structure.

Purpose:

The purpose of the proposed bylaw is to amend text in Zoning Bylaw No. 6680, 2001 to alter the regulations governing through sites occupied by single detached dwellings that would avoid unnecessary development variance applications.

The bylaw amendment indicates that where a residential property’s adjacent neighbours have their back yard function (garage, parking) facing in one direction, then that property would also be permitted to orient their rear yard function in that same direction. This would allow a through lot property to have reasonable vehicular access to their property and to allow appropriate siting of a garage, while still respecting the established development pattern.

The days of Fin Donnelly photo-ops along the New Westminster banks of the Fraser River will soon be over.

The Member of Parliament for New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody announced Tuesday he will seek the NDP nomination for the new Port Moody-Coquitlam riding in the next federal election.

The new riding was one of several created or changed in British Columbia by the Federal Electoral Boundaries

Commission earlier this month. The new riding includes the existing riding’s boundaries in Coquitlam and Port Moody, adding the rest of Port Moody as well as Anmore and Belcarra. New Westminster and a small corner of southeast Burnaby will comprise the new riding of New Westminster-Burnaby for the 2015 federal election.

Donnelly, who was born

in New West, famously swam the length of the Fraser River twice to raise awareness about environmental issues along its watershed. He launched his political career in

2002 as a city councillor in Coquitlam, serving two terms before entering federal politics.

He lives in Coquitlam.“I have enjoyed representing

the community and constituents of New Westminster, and I will continue to do so until the next election,” said Donnelly. “I am very grateful for their support over the past four years.”

Do you know someone between the ages of 25 and 45 who is making a big impact?

The NextUP awards recognizes up-and-coming, energetic people who live and/or work in New Westminster who are emerging or established leaders in their fields of work, and who are actively contributing to the positive

progress of this city. This is the second year for

the NextUP awards, which will be celebrated with a gala event on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Inn at the Quay. The event is put on as a partnership between the New Westminster NewsLeader and the young professionals networking group NEXT New West.

In a few sentences, tell us who the person is, why they should qualify for NextUP recognition, and how we can contact them. Email your nomination to [email protected], or drop it off at the NewsLeader office, 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby. Deadline for nominations is Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.

It was while turned around in my desk, chatting with the guy behind me, that the soft, tri-striped eraser with the rock-hard back side arced through the classroom air, split two rows of desks, zoomed up the aisle and landed with a thud right behind my ear.

That eraser left the hand of one of the best teachers I have ever had, Mr. Gladman, and I can still feel that Grade 6 welt today.

It’s a feeling associated with the very best of my school days.

Grade 6 was a year of firsts —first crushes, first overnight field trips, first rollerskating trips and first teacher who made a serious impression on students.

Mr. Gladman wasn’t much older than us (at least he didn’t seem that much older) and was, therefore, seen as an almost contemporary in the teaching fraternity that had, until Grade 6, us looking at teachers as though they were all standing on the very cliff of retirement.

Not Mr. Gladman, or “Bags,” as we called him.

He was cool. He would teach in very different ways. He knew how to help you find your passion among the subjects.

He would spend all lunch hour

in the classroom, debating sports with the students. He would stay long after the final bell, talking about life or playing floor hockey with us until the janitors kicked us out of the gym.

And, yes, he would deftly utilize chalkboard erasers, or dense textbooks, or taped-up wads of paper as aerial weapons when the boys among us insisted on not listening during a lesson.

Back then, we accepted the brief pain from a Gladman missile as the price to pay for goofing off; today, such acts would likely result in court hearings — reason No. 546 why things were so much better then than now . . .

So now we’re embarking on the 2013-2014 school year. For kids, summer is done and it’s time to get those brains working again.

For parents, it can be time to remember the Mr. Gladmans of our youth, those special teachers whose remarkable gift in the

classroom remains fresh in our minds decades after the fact.

Is there another profession in which the talent and passion of those employed can have such a lasting impact shaping lives?

So, in honour of this, the real start to the year, a salute to the teachers who stay with me yet:

• To Ms. Wood, my Grade 1 teacher, my first-ever teacher, who introduced a boy of six to his first rapid heartbeat. Ms. Wood, you see, had only recently been crowned Miss Abbotsford.

• To Mrs. Martens, my Grade 4 teacher who perfected the schoolmarm look and who shared my love for zany BCTV weatherman Norm Grohman, often interrupting a math lesson to share laughs about the previous night’s antics.

• To Mr. Anderson, my Grade 7 teacher who may have been almost as hockey-crazy as us boys and who had a heart of gold. It was he who palmed the slip of paper bearing the name of the girl with whom I was madly in love, holding it to the end as students pulled names for Christmas gifts — and dropping it into the empty hat when I was to pick the final name.

• To Mr. Stewart, the legendary librarian/gym teacher/basketball

coach who would constantly bring out newspapers for my Grade 8 mind to read and read.

• To Mr. Toews, a high school teacher who could barely smile and rarely laugh, but whose strict teaching style was so good that, today, 27 years later, I still know all details of Louis Riel and the Red River Rebellion courtesy of an inventive system of organizing the issues (language, religion, racism, etc.) into a little poem.

• To Mr. Ratzlaff, whose unbridled passion for history was as addictive as crack, whose teaching style was so energetic one was exhausted when the bell rang. On. Jan. 28, 1986, on the morning the space shuttle Challenger exploded, history was my first class and Mr. Ratzlaff suspended the usual lesson and sat at the edge of his desk, just talking with his students about the tragedy.

I think he did that all day.To these teachers and all others

whose marks on this world — via lesson plans and airborne projectiles — live on in the minds and bodies of kids of all ages, welcome to a new school year.

Salute to teachers, welts and all

If you are a minority government with a goal of removing your province from the country, and you want to avoid talking about your bad economic record —  well, it must be time to pick on “the ethnics.”

It’s hard to come to any other conclusion about the motivation behind the xenophobic Charter of Quebec Values, unveiled earlier this month by the minority Parti Quebecois government in Quebec.

The term “the ethnics” was used by former PQ premier Jacques Parizeau, when the province came close to approving separation in 1995. A 50.6 per cent margin approved staying in Canada. Parizeau blamed “money and the ethnic vote” for the narrow loss.

His successors haven’t forgotten. The Quebec charter is a thinly disguised attack on non-Caucasian, non-“pure laine” Quebecois. These include those not from a Catholic background, those with a different skin colour, those who practise a religion other than Christianity (with a special aim at Jews and Muslims) and those who somehow look different, such as wearing a head covering or a symbol of their religion.

However, it is heartening to see strong reaction from the federal government and the two federal party leaders who represent Quebec seats — Thomas Mulcair of the NDP and Justin Trudeau of the Liberals. The Quebec Liberals and the second provincial opposition party, the CAQ, also oppose the charter.

Quebeckers should think back to when longtime premier Maurice Duplessis targeted Jehovah’s Witnesses 70 years ago. This attempt to ban religious symbols is a similar paranoid attempt to exploit differences for political gain.

Most Quebeckers are fair-minded people. Hopefully they will see political trickery for what it is, and reject an attack on their neighbours.

COMMENT

Re: Residents rattled on Royal Avenue (NewsLeader, Sept. 13)

I understand how Theresa Henry-Smith and Jordan L’Abbe feel about the ongoing problems of trucks on Royal Avenue.

Royal Avenue residents are constantly exposed to noise, pollution and traffic every day. We are told that trucks are only allowed 7 a.m.-7 p.m. However, a few times I have seen trucks passing by after 8 p.m., and on Sundays.

Mr. Wat from the city said that there is “a general 10-20 per cent increase in truck traffic since last fall” according to data from the traffic counters. I beg to differ. Comparing the traffic since last fall does not cut it. I have lived here more than 15 years and traffic, both cars and trucks, has doubled.

Drivers take the Pattullo Bridge to avoid paying the toll on Port Mann Bridge. However, there are some issues that these drivers should think about: gas usage and time spent on the detour.

By the way, there is a school being built on Royal Avenue. Should the security, safety and health of schoolchildren be at risk as well?

Is it fair to residents, whose livability is greatly impacted by these contentious and continuous traffic problems?

It is not an unsolvable problem. It should be a collaborative effort of experts, residents and government officials to find the solution for the benefit of all.

Please work together to better the system sooner than later.

DOES GOVERNMENT ALWAYS WIN?

I was doing some tax planning for 2013 and discovered that the 2013 BC Basic Personal Tax Credits had decreased from 2012. I was confused because they are supposed to be indexed to inflation, i.e. I expected that they would be up in 2013, not down.

On further investigation I found this:

“As part of the HST implementation, the basic personal, spousal and eligible dependant amounts were increased in 2010. This increase was reversed when the PST was re-implemented on April 1, 2013; therefore, these amounts have decreased in 2013.”

Yeah, and not by a small amount either:

i.e. Basic 2012 = 11,354. Basic 2013 = $10,276 ($1,078 lower)

Spousal (Reduced when spousal income exceeds): 2012 = $9,964 ($996), 2013 = $8,860 ($886); $1,104 ($110) lower.

Seems to me that we are being punished for voting the HST out.

I don’t remember anybody mentioning changes to BC Basic Tax Credits during the run up to the vote.

Does the government always have to win?

COAL INTEGRAL TO B.C. ECONOMYRe: Port orders dust control, impact study for Surrey coal terminal (NewsLeader, Sept. 18)

The additional dust mitigation measures put forward by Fraser Surrey Docks — as well as an independent third party assessment of the proposal — reflects the ongoing commitment to innovation and improvement by the coal industry.

Opponents were quick to deride these measures as “insufficient” or “window

dressing.” Although nothing could

be further from the truth, it’s typical of type of rhetoric we’ve been hearing from anti-development groups devoted to opposing any coal project under any circumstances. Their goal is to see coal left in the ground.

That’s an extreme position and one that’s not supported by most British Columbians who understand the importance of coal, whether it’s used to make steel or to provide electricity to homes, businesses and communities.

British Columbians also understand the importance of this vital product to our economy and to working families. Our industry has been an integral part of B.C.’s rich history for decades and will continue to be, creating tens of thousands of well-paying, highly skilled jobs and contributing billions of dollars to the economy to help support the programs and services we depend on and have come to expect.

Visiting www.hyack.bc.ca, I noted the CIBC Parade of Lights was now a Festivals New West presentation—not Hyack Festival Association.

Did I miss the article in the papers officially announcing the name change?

In a newspaper interview, Hyack executive director Douglas Smith stated the executive was “uncomfortable with the vision we have set forth for the organization” and that the “strategic plan includes a name change.”

This comment infers that the name change has not yet been approved by the board and made official.

Having re-branded many companies in my 30 years as a marketing professional, I ensure that the social media tools are available to the company before investing in a name.

Today, it is standard practice for companies to secure their name in the digital environment for use as a domain, Twitter, Facebook and more.

Curious, I decided to research the domain availability of Festivals New West.

I found both festivalsnewwest.

com and festivalnewwest.ca were registered on Aug. 30 to local business person Bart Slotman for Uptown Property Group—two days after the article ran.

Further, I looked up the domain NewWestFestivals.ca and found it registered to the City of New West.

The records show that Hyack neglected to register this new brand prior to its public announcement, resulting in outside interests owning the new digital name and every extension and variation of it.

So I ask, did the Hyack board approve the name change to Festivals New West, knowing they don’t own any domain assets?

Did they approve this name change knowing that the city registered NewWestFestivals.ca?

How is it that a Smith cheerleader was able to secure these two critical domain names for Uptown Property Group?

Even more poignant—why? Was this acquisition done with or without the consent of the executive director, committee or board?

Will tax dollars be needed

to secure these domains from Uptown Property Group or after much time and effort will the new name be abandoned?

Last, if Hyack and the city were “in planning sessions,” how is it that each came away with two different names?

Is the plan for the city’s new event department to operate under New West Festivals while Smith proposes Hyack operates under Festivals New West?

Is this really the best result from a “planning session” between the city and Mr. Smith?

Given these facts, has the rebranding strategy so carefully concocted by a Hyack executive director, a strategic committee, the city and an unnamed consulting company—failed on a digital technicality?

However, hedging all bets and believing Uptown Property Group and the city know something that Hyack doesn’t, mainly that domain names have value and are assets, my marketing company STC (100 per cent owned exclusively by myself) successfully registered NewWestFestivals.com.

Van Buynder seeks details, keeps legal powers in reserveJeff NagelBlack Press

Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer won’t yet say if he thinks an environmental impact assessment of a planned new coal export terminal in Surrey ordered last week by Port Metro Vancouver will be sufficient to answer health concerns.

Dr. Paul Van Buynder said he and counterpart Dr. Patricia Daly at the Vancouver Coastal health authority are pleased the port is now talking to them about risks from coal dust and trains.

But he said they’re

reserving judgment as to whether the newly announced review goes far enough until they can learn more about it.

“If this doesn’t meet our needs, we will be saying so in due course,” Van Buynder said Tuesday.

The health officers had been calling for months for a comprehensive health impact assessment of the coal transfer facility proposed by Fraser Surrey Docks, which would bring an extra coal train per day through South Surrey and White Rock, and send barges laden with coal to Texada Island.

Van Buynder said he wants more information on the scope of the review, which Fraser

Surrey Docks has commissioned consulting firm SNC Lavalin to lead.

Fraser Surrey officials said last week the review could be complete by the end of September, prompting coal activists to ridicule the two-week timeline as obviously

inadequate.Van Buynder

said he and Daly were surprised to learn some studies had already been commissioned

for the review without their knowledge.

“We were somewhat surprised about the extent of the activity that we were unaware of,” he said.

“If the bulk of the work has already happened, maybe they’re correct. If

they’re just about to start, it’s never going to happen.”

Van Buynder had previously estimated a proper health impact assessment might delay construction by six to

12 months.He also reiterated

a previous statement that he could use his legal powers under the Public Health Act to compel the proponent to mitigate health

risks to residents from coal dust, if he’s not ultimately satisfied with the steps taken by the port.

The port also last week ordered new measures to guard

against the escape of coal, including the re-spraying of trainloads with a dust-control agent and axing provisions for a contingency coal storage pile.

Health Canada faces call at UBCM to aid with transitionJeff NagelBlack Press

Lower Mainland mayors are predicting disaster when Ottawa cancels medical marijuana growing licences in thousands of B.C. homes next spring in favour of new commercial producers.

They warned federal officials at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention Tuesday that the transition – without any teeth to enforce closure and cleanup of the soon-to-be-illegal home grows – will push them further into the grip of organized crime and leave cities with a legacy of contaminated houses.

“You created this nightmare,” Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman told Health Canada representatives, noting Ottawa refused to identify licensees so cities could inspect them and ensure they’re safe.

He said the federal government therefore has a moral obligation to help ensure medical pot grow houses are

made safe so subsequent buyers don’t unsuspectingly move their families and children into homes with serious mould problems or electrical or fire code violations.

“Fix the problem you helped create,” Banman demanded. “These people are going to close these homes down, they’re going to slap a little paint on and nobody is going to be the wiser. That is borderline criminal.”

Health Canada would take steps to remediate if it were tied to properties contaminated with asbestos, he suggested, so it should do the same when under B.C. law past use of a property as a grow-op must be disclosed for health reasons.

Other mayors, including Chilliwack’s Sharon Gaetz and Kelowna’s Walter Gray, predicted medical growers won’t stop voluntarily.

“Dave’s not here, man,” quipped Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow in a rendition of Cheech and Chong.

Asked by the mayor of Mission what will be done to ensure growers shut down, Health Canada’s Todd Cain said licensees will be notified

they must cease production, decommission and remediate.

“Beyond that, we’re really relying on them to follow the law,” he said, drawing laughter.

“They’re going to take that letter and roll it in product and they’re going to smoke it – that’s what’s going to happen,” predicted Mission Coun. Dave Hensman.

He demanded to know how Ottawa justified licensing 700 legal medical pot grows in Mission – a community of 30,000 people – and said he opposes his municipality spending a dime to clean up the problem.

“I’m not going to shut them down and you’re not going to shut them down. So dude, it’s not going to work.”

Cain said privacy restrictions still prevent Ottawa from disclosing permitted grows.

He said Health Canada could begin certifying legal producers within weeks and some of the expected 50 to 75 producers to be chosen nation-wide are expected to be in operation well before the official April 1 launch date of the new system.

For 19 years, New Westminster resident Rick Janssen has been tracking his mileage riding his bike.

Why? The avid cyclist just thought it’d be interesting.

Last Friday, Janssen, 62, celebrated a big milestone — 100,000 kms travelled.

Family and friends were out on River Road in Delta to meet him at the spot where he reached the 100K mark, where they cheered him on, took photos and shared a few beverages.

“It was a great feeling—a great accomplishment to reach such a high plateau,” he said.

Rides have taken him from Newfoundland to New Westminster in 2009, a trip of 9,000 km he took with two friends.

He’s also cycled from New West to San Francisco, and on two separate trips flew to Calgary and Edmonton before cycling home. In 2012, he flew to Brussels, Belgium and cycled to Amsterdam, Netherlands, where he was born. He’s also participated several times in the Seattle-to-Portland (STP) annual ride.

Janssen said cycling is a great stress reliever and great exercise.

In the future, he’s considering a ride along the Underground Railway, the route blacks fleeing slavery took from the U.S. to Canada. He also hopes to do some legs of the Tour de France.

For now, he’s already started his next 100K.

100K down and ready for more

Time to get curlingA new roof, walls and insulation

may not make members of the Royal City Curling Club better curlers, but it will keep them more comfortable as they open their 48th season on Saturday.

The ice has been put in and the lines painted by the club’s new ice maker, Mike Merklinger, who’s created ice for local and national competitions.

The $160,000 worth of improvements to the building will help keep that ice consistent and competitive, said RCCC president Doug McKinnon.

The season’s first event on

Saturday will be a Bowlspiel, that combines curling and lawn bowling. There will also be registration for the club’s junior programs from noon - 2 p.m.

Those programs will look to create the next Andrew Bilesky, who represented British Columbia at the 2013 Brier.

The club will also continue to host the Premium Curling League, that features some of the province’s top curlers including former national and world champions, every Wednesday night.

For more information go to www.royalcitycc.com.

The Arts Council of New Westminster has a long history of giving out

scholarships in the city. One recent recipient was the

very talented New Westminster secondary student Sarah Quinn.

Now attending Langley Fine Arts School, Sarah has an amazing story to tell of her time at Stratford, which was made possible through funding provided by the Arts Council.

I’ve asked Sarah to tell us in her own words:

“Being able to go to the Stratford Summer Shakespeare School in Ontario this summer was an opportunity and experience I will never forget. Not only did I spend my 17th birthday doing something that I absolutely love, I was able to experience two amazing weeks with other teenagers from across North America who were there for the same reason—the love of acting and Shakespeare!

The group was separated into two classes and each was given a play to perform.

Our play was Shakespeare’s famous Romeo and Juliet, which is my all-time

favourite Bard play! I was given the part of Juliet, as well

as dance captain. It was incredibly

humbling to be given this role, but it definitely wasn’t easy to pull off. After intensive eight-hour rehearsal days, every day except Sunday, I would

spend hours memorizing, mentally preparing and getting into my character.

This was often after the different Stratford Festival plays or musical

theatre performances we were fortunate to attend every other night.

One of those plays was Romeo and Juliet in the famous Stratford Festival Theatre.

It was an unreal experience. The two weeks at the Stratford

school not only confirmed that acting is what I want to do for the rest of my life, it also inspired me in more ways that I can count.

I am so thankful for being given a scholarship from the Arts Council of New Westminster.

Without this, I wouldn’t be here with the memories and experience of having been able to perform my favourite character, in my favourite

Bard play—with amazing new friends and to have worked with an incredible director, learn from and be coached by accomplished Stratford actors, and live the life I have always dreamed of.

Thanks to the Arts Council for helping me find my voice and vocation through scholarship funding.”

—Sarah Quinn

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

By Kerry Vital

Buying a home is one of the largest purchasing decisions most people will make in their lifetime. With so many things to consider like location, builder and price, to name a few, the process of finding the right home for you and your family can be stressful. However, when buying a new single family home from Morningstar Homes, a company whose promise is to create an oasis from today’s fast-paced life, you really can sit

back and enjoy the process.“We take the guess-work out, by providing show homes that

are tangible examples of what your home will be like,” says Deborah Calahan, vice-president of sales and marketing at Morningstar. “Prospective purchasers can walk through the show homes and choose which floor plan is right for them!”

Morningstar prides itself on its reputation for building gorgeous homes and having great customer service. Calahan notes that “word-of-mouth is our best form of advertising”, and

has noticed a marked increase in friends and family referrals over the past five years. She often gets people inquiring about the homes who know someone who has already purchased a Morningstar home.

“There’s comfort knowing that you have an endorsement from someone you know,” she says. Add that to Morningstar’s brand recognition, reinforced by having seven successfully

Morningstar brings happiness to homeowners

By Kerry Vital

In the northeast part of Coquitlam rises Burke Mountain, a new community of family-friendly neighbourhoods that is perfect for people who love the great outdoors while still being connected to everyday amenities. With a park within five minutes of every home on the mountain and new homes and amenities such as schools and shopping going up every day, it comes as no surprise that Burke Mountain is rapidly becoming a very popular place to live.

One of the biggest developers currently

building on Burke Mountain is Morningstar Homes. They recently started sales on their eighth project, and are one of the largest single-family home builders in the neighbourhood.

Outdoor lovers will find plenty to enjoy on Burke Mountain, with its system of trails that connects everything else in the neighbourhood. This makes the area incredibly pedestrian-friendly. In fact, Coquitlam’s first green street was built on Burke Mountain, inside Morningstar’s Belmont development. You’ll also find playgrounds, parks and other outdoor spaces generously sprinkled around Burke Mountain. A community garden is also in the works, so you can exercise your green thumb.

When the weather isn’t the best, you are within easy reach of shopping and dining opportunities at nearby Coquitlam Centre and the surrounding area. You’ll also find transit located here as well, making your commute just a bit easier. TransLink’s Evergreen Line is expected to open in 2016,

making it even more simple. You’re also within 30 minutes of downtown Vancouver by car, and within 40 minutes of the Vancouver International Airport.

However, you may not need to leave Burke Mountain at all. Among the commercial space that is currently under construction is Meridian Crossing. Subway and 7-Eleven are already open there, with other tenants expected to open this fall. Among them are Hiraku Sushi and a dental clinic. A village centre is also in the works with coffee shops, light retail and a community centre in the plans.

Burke Mountain is currently home to several schools, with more due to be built in the future. You’re also close to Douglas College’s Coquitlam campus, as well as Simon Fraser University in Burnaby.

The sense of community on Burke Mountain is readily apparent. If you take a walk around, you hear children playing, neighbours chatting and birds chirping. That feeling will only continue as the area grows.

Rob Newell photosCoquitlam’s Burke Mountain is rapidly becoming one of the most popular areas to live in the Lower Mainland. Gorgeous homes combine with amazing views and plenty of opportunities for leisure and recreation.

Morningstar Homes has found ‘the secret recipe’

homeProfile

Submitted photosHomes at Partington are spacious and open, with huge windows, above, modern kitchens, below right, and soothing master bedrooms, some with an attached sitting area, below. However, it’s the views of Coquitlam and Burke Mountain at Partington that are truly spectacular, bottom. You’ll feel an instant sense of relaxation as soon as you enter your new home.

CONTINUED FROM HOME FRONT

sold-out neighborhoods on Burke Mountain alone, which gives purchasers the added comfort and peace of mind that they are dealing with a reputable builder who stands behind the homes they sell.

Already, Calahan says that buyers at Partington are telling her how happy they are with their purchase.

“They’re genuinely happy with the buying experience,” she says. And they’ll be extremely happy with their new home when it’s completed

later this year.Among the gorgeous features at Partington is a huge kitchen with a granite

island, stainless-steel appliances and tons of room to entertain. The entire home is built in an open-plan layout, which takes advantage of every inch of space available. With three floorplans available, all around 3,800 square feet and with three or four bedrooms, there’s no shortage of space. Each comes with an unfinished basement and a large private yard with a patio or deck.

Other beautiful parts of the home include a floor-to-ceiling linear fireplace, oversized windows, hardwood floors and a 19-foot vaulted ceiling.

“We always make the most of our windows,” Calahan says. “This time, they’re extra big.”

When you combine all of the features, every home is simply spectacular.“These homes are very well laid out,” Calahan says. “There’s a sense of

grandeur here. People are noting the ‘wow’ of the house; it takes your breath away.”

The grandest part of Partington is the phenomenal views available from every home. Looking out over Burke Mountain and Coquitlam, you truly feel like you’re among the clouds.

Partington is perfectly located for homeowners to live the Burke Mountain lifestyle. The neighbourhood has been growing over the years and now includes schools, parks and trails.

Partington opened for sale in July, and already 15 of the 45 homes have been sold. “We’re really pleased with the response,” Calahan says.

Morningstar has long been setting the standard for homes in the neighbourhood, and Calahan says that continues with Partington.

“We are one of the largest single-family builders here,” she says, adding “It’s a real happy balance between a planned neighbourhood and a custom home. We’ve really found the secret recipe for making the homeowners happy.”

Homes at Partington start at $898,900. For more information, visit www.morningstarhomes.bc.ca, call 604-942-6370 or visit the sales centre at 1508 Dayton Street in Coquitlam.
