Quick event announcements from the Western New York Peace Center for the week of September2 to 8. The Weekly Updates will be back on a regular schedule starting on Friday, September 4.

Many apologies for the absence and delays over the summer! Many changes have occurred over the season, and we hope to catch up and inform you about them in coming weeks, as well as exciting upcoming Peace Center events for Autumn and Winter 2015!

“Press Conference For 'Peace & Non-Violence Festival/Walk' ”

Mayor Byron Brown will kick off the local Campaign Nonviolence initiative (publicizing the upcoming Peace & Non-Violence Festival/Walk on 9/6) with a press conference on the steps of CityHall, featuring the Peace Center's Interim Executive Director, Victoria Ross.

June & Roger's 35th Annual Day Picnic”

All are welcome! Invite friends. No cost, part from the potluck (bring food & drink to share). Most excellent camaraderie will be provided!

Music will be provided by Sol Y Sambra, the BloodThirsty Vegans, various folk singers, and YOU.

Recreational activities will include boating (kayaks, canoes), and volleyball. Volleyball

A 50/50 raffle for the Peace Education Fund (PEF) will be held.

This year's even will celebrate June License & Roger Cook's 50th year together (a/k/a non-marital bliss ) and their 30th year of residence on the West Niagara River. ☺

Many more anniversaries will be celebrated: Alex & Sophia Mead's 5th year together, and their daughter Aya's 4th birthday; PEF's 12 years helping to support 85 people and projects via General Grants and Awards (which include Joan A. Droit Camp PeacePrints Scholarships, Samuel Loliger PeaceJam Awards, Tino Bellanca Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) Fund). PEF is hosted by Riverside-Salem UCC/DC.

The event is co-sponsored by the Interfaith Peace Network, the Peace Education/Conflict Resolution Project, Women in Black, World On Your Plate, Indigenous Women's Initiatives, and theWNY Peace Center.

“Peace & Non-Violence Festival/Walk”

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Martin Luther King Jr. Park (@ MLK Statue)

The WNY Coalition of Peace and Nonviolence Advocates (including Stop The Violence Coalition, the WNY Peace Center, and more than 80 groups supporting peace and justice) will hold the Peace and Nonviolence Festival and [The Peace] Walk [To End The Violence} on Labor Day. The purpose is to collaborate with the community to stop violence in our streets, and everywhere else.

The WNY Coalition of Peace and Nonviolence Advocates, including Stop The Violence Coalition, the WNY Peace Center, and more than 80 groups supporting peace and justice, will hold the Peace and Nonviolence Festival and Walk on Labor Day, in order to collaborate with the community to stop the violence in our streets and everywhere. It will be on the statue side of MLK Park, Buffalo.

The Peace Walk will start at Noon.

Various organizations and vendors will have speakers, information, opportunities to connect, and children activities all day long.

A free family cookout will include food and beverages. Live music will be provided by Ismail and Company and Chuckie Campbell.

Puppeteer Michele Costa, will provide enjoyment with her puppets, guaranteed to bring smiles to the faces of the children and adults.

The many groups and organizations working for peace and nonviolence will stand together in support of one another and invite the whole community to join in, as all are needed for real change to come. Creating a culture of peace, nonviolence, and justice will make our communities and world safer for our children.

People will be called to emulate exemplars such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Sister KarenKlimczak whose lives were dedicated to compassionate and courageous nonviolence, as part of a larger nationwide Campaign Nonviolence movement.

Free and open to the public (people may want to bring lawn chairs).
