Abbotsforward Announces Citizen Advisory Commission Members

The City of Abbotsford is pleased to announce the members of the new Citizen Advisory Commis-sion in support of the Abbotsforward, Official Community Plan (OCP) update project, said Mayor, Bruce Banman today.

Over 30 applications for the Citizen Advisory Commission were received and a nine member group was selected by Abbotsford City Council last week.

We are very pleased with the response from residents wishing to be a part of this important advisory committee, said Banman. The residents repre-sented on this Commission will have direct input into Abbotsfords updated OCP which will guide how future de-velopment occurs across our City for years to come.

The Citizen Advisory Commission will meet once a month and will help shape the future of Abbotsford by reviewing land use policy, helping with community engagement and giving feedback on new planning ideas. The members of the Citizen Advisory Commission are:

Gurminder S. Gobindpuri Nissa Hildebrand Sonya Hossmann Denise Laier Aaron Levy

Eden Luymes Carson Noftle Crys-tal Salter Hardeep Sidhu

The public engagement activities of the Abbotsforward OCP update project officially launched on July 1 at Abbots-fords Canada Day celebrations, and the project team has since engaged with nearly 600 residents at eight different local events over the summer.

As part of the initial public engagement campaign, the Picture Your City photo activity, which asked residents to send in what they like, dislike and wish for in Abbotsford, received over 95 photo submissions. These photos will help in informing City staff what residents want from their city. A sample of the photos taken can be found at www.ab-botsforward.ca

Staff will begin compiling all the infor-mation from the community engagement events, as well as from initial research, analysis and workshops to prepare a Background Research report for Council to consider next month. -30- For more information contact: Katherine Treloar,

Vitamin D is certainly the star of the moment, but some of the hype appears justified. New research is supporting the correlation of low vitamin D levels with the progres-sion of Multiple Sclerosis. It remains unclear whether vitamin D supplemen-tation can alter, or even prevent, the de-velopment of MS, but several studies are now underway to look at this question.

Its important to understand as much as possible about chronic and incurable conditions, such as Multiple Sclerosis, as this can lead to novel therapies or prevention. With MS, it has now been shown that those who are obese at age 20 have twice the risk of developing MS later in life. Treatments can be aimed at reducing the damaging inflammation due to leptin (which comes with obesity) and prevention via weight management.

A pilot study out of Dallas is already demonstrating the benefits of yoga for managing Multiple Sclerosis. A specifically designed program lead to improvements in walking ability, bal-ance, fatigue, and general health status,

and even seemed to help control inflam-mation. The benefits were seen in as little as 8 weeks, with two 90-minutes sessions per week. It looks like yoga could form a reasonable part of MS management!

A new drug for treating Multiple Scle-rosis is making its way onto the market: dimethyl fumarate (Tecfidera). It is gaining approval as a first-line treatment of the relapsing-remitting form of MS and appears to be well-tolerated with side-effects such as flushing and gastro-intestinal symptoms, which generally subside over the first month. It also requires monitoring of liver and kidney function as well as blood counts.

Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive condition due to damage of the myelin sheath of nerve fibres that leads to numbness and loss of motor function. While there is no cure, our pharmacists can advise about management and life-style changes.

City Renews Lease with Ledgeview Golf Society

Abbotsford City Council has renewed its lease with the Ledgeview Golf and Country Club Society for a term of five years with three additional five year renewal terms, commencing on January 1, 2015, announced Mayor Bruce Banman today.

Ledgeview Golf Course, which is owned by the City of Abbotsford and open to the public for golf, is located in a spectacular setting on Sumas Mountain with panoramic views of the Fraser Valley. The golf course and clubhouse occupy approximately 115 acres north of McKee Road in Abbotsford and the course has been rated in the top 20 full-length Golf Courses in BC by the Province of BC.

The City has leased the golf course and facilities to the Ledgeview Golf and Country Club, a not-for-profit society, for the past 33 years, said Banman. This lease renewal provides an opportunity for those members and other wanting to renew or engage in an annual membership with Ledgeview with the certainty they need to do that.

The renewed lease agreement sees the So-ciety continuing to operate the facility on behalf of the City with the City receiving

revenues in the form of rent and profit shar-ing. The long term lease agreement provides to the City competent stewardship of a much needed and well regarded municipal recre-ational facility.

We are thrilled the City has renewed its lease with us for the continued operations of Ledgeview, said Society President, John Hambley. We are committed to the ongo-ing success of the facility and look forward to providing excellent golfing experiences through memberships and daily green fee rates to Abbotsford residents and visitors to the city.

Ledgeview Golf and Country Club has operated since 1963. The course has been a tourism destination for Abbotsford residents and visitors for many years and provides an excellent 18-hole experience. Ledgeview hosts over 50 charity tournaments and ban-quet functions a year and over 17,000 rounds of golf for the general public each season.

The success of Ledgeview is owed to the hard work of the volunteers of the club, said Banman. The members have committed countless volunteer hours and have invested significant capital and rent into this club and we all want to support its ongoing success.

Next time youre d r i v i n g , l o o k around at the other drivers on the road. What do you see? Chances are youll notice at least one driver using their cellphone. We all know its illegal and risky but yet some people still do it.

With so many people de-pendent on their cell phones these days, distracted driv-ing is a growing concern as people automatically reach for their phone whenever they hear a text message or call, even if theyre driving. Thats why were working hard to educate drivers to make our roads safer for everyone.

This fall, youll likely see community volunteers con-ducting cell watch deploy-ments in your neighbour-hood. Volunteers set up signs to remind drivers to leave their phone alone and they also record how many drivers they see using their phones and share the infor-

mation with police. Police may also be set up further down the road to give tickets to those drivers who didnt heed the warning from vol-unteers.

If your cell phone rings or you receive a text mes-sage while driving, are you ever tempted to check your phone? You can avoid the temptation by putting your cellphone in the trunk or back seat. Pay attention to

the habits of your friends and family and talk to them about how to avoid using their cell phone while driv-ing. Youre four times more likely to crash if youre on the phone while driving.

But its not just drivers who get distracted. Pedestrians also need to do their part and pay attention to whats going on around them, es-pecially at intersections. That means removing your

Watch out for distractions this fallheadphones and putting away your cellphone so you can see, hear and respond to keep yourself safe. As we head into darker, fall condi-tions, its more important than ever to stay alert talk to your friends and family about it too.You can show your support by displaying a decal on your vehicle as a statement that you dont use your phone while driving and

encourage others to do the same. You can pick up a decal at any ICBC driver licensing office and par-ticipating Autoplan broker locations. You can also take the Fall of Distracted Driv-ing pledge at The Fox and Rock 101 websites. No call or text is so impor-tant that its worth risking your life or anyone elses. Remember, when youre on the road, stay off the phone.

ICBCs Harvey Kooner is passionate about helping to raise road safety awareness in the community. In 2012, Harvey was awarded the

Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his many years of community service.

    Abbotsford Neighbours Day September 20

Abbotsfords Neighbours Day on September 20th is an excel-lent opportunity for everyone to strengthen their neighbourhood con-nections!

Neighbours Day is celebrated world-wide as an annual celebration of com-munity, bringing together the people next door, across the street or even on the next farm for some social interaction and fun.

This year, the City of Abbotsford is encouraging residents to get together this year and plan something special for their neighbours, and then register their idea at www.mycityisabbotsford.ca to share their story.

Through this website, residents can ac-cess the Neighbourhood Spirit Toolkit that provides excellent information, tips and resources for anyone planning or hosting inclusive neighbourhood events and socials.

Examples of items available through the site include tables, chairs, a barbeque, tents, a tug-of- war rope, and games for

all ages. These items are loaned free of charge, and are available on a first come, first serve basis (some restrictions apply). If additional support is needed, residents can also contact the City of Abbotsfords Community Developer at [email protected] for as-sistance.

Developing strong neighbourhoods as a way to enhance community safety and reduce crime became a priority for the City of Abbotsford in 2010. Neighbour-hood Capacity Building is a key part of the Crime Reduction and Community Safety Strategy. Abbotsfords Neigh-bours Day is a way to inspire residents to get to know each other, and help make Abbotsford neighbourhoods safer and more vibrant places to live.

View the Abbotsford Neighbours Day video, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=USa7nWa5Yvg .

For more information and resources, visit www.mycityisabbotsford.ca , or contact the Community Developer at 604-557-1464.

A boost in operating funding in addition to one-time startup and planning capital will support 13 first-year additional spac-es for speech and language therapists at the University of British Columbia. The speech-language pa-thology program at UBC trains speech and language therapists. They can help with identifying, assessing and treating communications disorders in people of all ages in areas such as speech, language, voice, stuttering and swallowing disorders. They also consult with other health-care professionals and support workers, school personnel, families and care-givers, as well as autism intervention teams. An estimated one in 10 peo-ple in British Columbia have a speech or language disor-der. One in approximately 68 children in Canada has autism and all of these chil-dren experience a speech-language difficulty.

The Ministry of Health has identified speech-language pathologists as one of its priorities to address short-ages of health professionals. The additional spaces will support the Ministry of Child and Family Development that also identified demand for more speech-language therapists. The provincial government is providing a total of $3.4 million in startup and ongo-ing operating funding to add student spaces in the speech-language pathology program at UBC. This includes almost $2.5 million for startup and planning costs and an ad-ditional $932,000 in annual operating costs. The funding will allow UBC to add 13 first-year speech-language pathology spaces seven starting in 2015-16, and an-other six in 2016-17 for a total of 36 first-year spaces.

The credential is a masters of science in audiology and speech sciences (speech-language pathology). The program length is 21 to 36 months depending on the students undergradu-ate preparation and choice of graduating requirement. The program involves 48 credits in graduate courses, five clinical externships in community settings, and

a final thesis, or project/paper, or comprehensive exam. An MSc. is required for certification to practice in Canada as a professional speech-language patholo-gist. UBC offers the only program in British Columbia to educate speech-language pathologists. For more information on the role of speech and language professionals, visit the web-site for the BC Association of Speech-Language Pa-thologists and Audiologists at: www.bcaslpa.ca

    Quotes:

    Advanced Education Minis-ter Amrik Virk

Most of us take the ability to communicate for granted, but for the thousands of Brit-ish Columbians who have problems with speech, lan-guage or swallowing, speech therapists provide a bridge to the rest of the world. Adding 13 first-year spaces to the training program at UBC will help meet growing de-mand for qualified speech-language pathologists.

Children and Family Devel-opment Minister Stephanie Cadieux

An estimated one in 10 British Columbians has a speech or language disor-

der. Similarly, one in ap-proximately 68 children in Canada has autism, and all of these children experience some degree of speech-language difficulty. Speech-language pathologists help enrich the lives of these B.C. families and children by sup-porting them to address and overcome their communica-tion challenges.

UBC vice provost health and dean of the faculty of medicine Gavin Stuart

This funding supports a 56% increase in the number of speech-language patholo-gy students at UBC, address-ing the provinces urgent need for professionals with the skills and experience to diagnose communications and swallowing disorders, provide treatment, and col-laborate with educators, health care providers, social workers, families and care-givers.

BC Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists vice-president Julia Hodder

The BC Association of Speech-Language Patholo-gists and Audiologists (BCASLPA) welcomes the news of the new provincial funding to expand the train-ing program for Speech-

Language Pathologists at UBC. The increase in fund-ing supports BCASLPAs efforts to provide access

to highly trained, certified professionals across this province who can help sup-port and provide services to

those of all ages with com-munication needs. Lives are changed by improved communication

With MPs returning to Ottawa tomor-row for the final round of Parliamen-tary business before the 2015 federal election, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released results of a supporter survey completed over the three days that shows broad support for paying down debt and providing lower, simpler personal income taxes. More than 5,000 CTF supporters responded to the survey,

with 2,500 providing additional written advice to the federal finance minister.

PAYING DOWN DEBT IS THE TOP PRIOR-ITY

With the federal budget headed for a surplus ahead of the next election, paying down the federal debt was the top priority of 52 per cent of CTF supporters, while 44 per cent want to reduce taxes.

The federal government has borrowed $154 billion since the financial meltdown in 2008, said CTF Federal Director Gregory Thomas. Ottawa now owes more than $600 billion dol-lars. Our supporters want Stephen Harper to start paying back some of the money his government has borrowed.

LOWER TAX RATES, FEWER BRACKETS PREFERRED OVER INCOME SPLITTING

Given an either/or choice between across-the-board tax cuts for everybody and income-splitting, CTF supporters chose lower rates and fewer brackets by a wide margin 72 per cent in favour, compared to 22 per cent who want income splitting. Only 14 per cent, of CTF supporters said they would personally benefit from the governments current income splitting proposal.

Despite only 9 per cent of CTF supporters pick-ing the governments income splitting proposal as their top choice for a tax cut, 52 per cent said they would support the Harper government if it goes ahead with the plan in the next budget, while 21 per cent would oppose it and 22 per cent are still on the fence.

Thomas says CTF supporters willingness to get behind income splitting reflects a pragmatic interest in lower taxes.

Our supporters are practical people, said Thomas. They want lower taxes. And while income splitting might not be their favourite option, they know any tax cut beats increasing spending.

STAY-AT-HOME PARENT CHILD CARE DEDUCTION EDGES INCOME SPLITTING

When asked for the best way to cut taxes if the government targets only families with children, 27 per cent said stay-at-home parents should be able to claim the child care deduction currently available only to parents who pay outside pro-viders for child care, while 26 per cent favoured income splitting. 17 per cent want to see the child tax credit raised.

Stay at home parents have just as many expens-es as parents who send their kids to an outside child care, said Thomas. Its no surprise CTF supporters would support leveling the playing field for this tax benefit.

Working together in B.C. to build a more accessible Planat

B.C.s commitment to make the province the most pro-gressive place in Canada for people with disabilities is being ignited through a new partnership with the Rick Hansen Foundation.

The foundation will receive more than $125,000 to pro-vide on-the-job experience for a minimum of six people with disabilities who are currently unemployed. The work experience will in-clude helping assess and provide accessibility ratings for about 300 businesses, venues and public spaces in the Lower Mainland for the Rick Hansen Founda-tion Planat website. The employees will have the opportunity to network and engage with business lead-ers as they conduct their reviews. People can use this site to search and review the accessibility of places worldwide.

People with accessibil-ity needs create one of the largest markets in the world with one in seven people worldwide who have some sort of disability. Once friends and families are included, nearly everyone is affected by accessibility issues in some way.

Job Creation Partnerships like this are part of the Employment Program of BCs Community and Em-ployer Partnerships, which fund projects that provide job-ready skills and share labour-market information.

This project delivers on the commitment in Accessibil-ity 2024 to partner with the Rick Hansen Foundation to expand the Planat tool in B.C. Accessibility 2024 is a 10-year action plan released by the Premier to make B.C. the most progressive place in Canada for people with disabilities by 2024.

Quotes:Don McRae, Minister, So-cial Development and Social Innovation This partnership demon-strates our commitment to make B.C. the most acces-sible province in Canada. This project will provide people with disabilities with the skills and confidence they need to reach their employment goals and help to ensure that people have reliable accessibility infor-mation at their fingertips.

Rick Hansen, Rick Hansen Foundation This project will benefit job seekers with a disability, businesses and the public. Making venues accessible and being able to showcase them makes great economic sense and will improve the lives of people with disabili-ties. We hope this project in B.C. will pave the way for similar partnerships across Canada.

    Dear Editor,

The old saying that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure is still very relevant. This seems to be the motto of University of Victoria (U.Vic)s health outreach initiatives. A year or so ago, U. Vic under Dr. Patrick McGowans leader-ship and hard work of dedi-cated people like Jay Bains and his colleagues, did an excellent job in reaching out to the South Asian com-munity in addressing some of the chronic diseases like diabetes ,heart health and high blood pressure etc. That project created a lot of awareness in our commu-nity. What was even more impressive was the involve-ment of a large number of South Asian women in that process. Furthermore, the involvement of numerous South Asian professionals enhanced the effective-ness of that initiative. Now U.Vic has brought this help

a lot closer not only for the South Asian community but also for every other com-munity. On Tuesday, September 9, U.Vic opened a spa-cious office in our own neighbourhood at 4907 Chisholm Street in Ladner (Delta). A large number of professionals, ordinary folks, elected officials and community leaders graced the Open House occasion. The newly opened office is a one stop centre for provid-ing information to potential clients. In a sense, it is an operational centre which receives calls from all over the province relating to their health and well- being. Top floor of this spacious build-ing has the administrative office which deals with administration and research studies on data collected in the field. The ground floor is designed to offer direct services to clients and those who walk in. The main purpose of this store front

office is to provide service in the primary healthcare sector based on prevention and management of chronic conditions in different lan-guages. U. Vic, its Centre on Aging, its staff and man-agement urge the pubic to make extensive use of these services. The Centre has very well qualified profes-sionals who are capable of providing these services in various languages.

    Sincerely,

    Balwant Sanghera
