Dear Parishioners,

Ash Wednesday is just a week and a half away

but more importantly Mardi Gras is less than a

week away! As a Parish, we will celebrate

Mardi Gras on Saturday night, February 22,

with the Elmhurst Boys and the Saint Vincent

de Paul Society. Let me assure you that the din-

ner will be spectacular! Please make our Parish

celebration one of great joy by adding your

name to the guest list! Please see today’s bulle-

tin for more details or just purchase a ticket after

one of the Masses this weekend.

While we will have more information about

Lent in next week’s bulletin, I did want to men-

tion briefly our Lenten lecture series to be held

each Saturday morning after the 8:00am Mass.

The presentations will be based on Brant Pitre’s

book, “Jesus the Bridegroom.” It is a fascinat-

ing outline of how Jesus fulfills the messianic

prophecies of the Old Testament, principally by

revealing Himself as the Groom preparing to be

joined to His bride, the Church, on the Cross. I

pray that this is just the right book for this Lent

as we draw closer to Christ in a deepened under-

standing of His Sacrifice.

Enjoy these last days of Ordinary Time and

green vestments! While those vestments go off

to the dry cleaner, let us continue to pray for

each other, especially now as we prepare to un-

dertake the penances needed to purify our hearts

for Christ’s glorious resurrection.

See you at Mardi Gras!

In St. Dominic,

Fr. James, O.P.

St. Pius V Mission Statement

We, the Catholic family of St. Pius V Parish, are gifted by God with the vision of St. Dominic. Empow-

ered by the Holy Spirit and truth, we actively minister to the spiritual and physical needs of the mem-

bers of the Body of Christ. Through a welcoming Eucharistic community, we commit to praise, bless,

preach, and to live the love of Jesus through word and deed.

Lenten Fast and Abstinence Regulations

L A W (F 26)

Abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent (for those 14 and older) is required

by Church law. Also, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting: those between the ages of

18 and 59 should eat less, meaning, take no solid food between meals and only one full meal that day.

Serious health conditions excuse a person from these precepts.

Parents are encouraged by the law of the Church to ensure that minors who are not bound by the law

of fast and abstinence are educated nonetheless in an authentic sense of penance.

for Presidents’ Day)

P V F"

Almighty GOD, we make our earnest prayer that Thou

will keep the United States in Thy holy protection, that

Thou wilt incline the hearts of citizens to cultivate a

spirit of subordination and obedience to government;

and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one an-

other and for their fellow citizens of the United States of

America at large. And finally that Thou wilt most gra-

ciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love

mercy and to demean ourselves with that charity, humil-

ity and pacific temper of mind which were the charac-

teristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion,

and without whose example in these things we can never

hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we

beseech thee, through Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Amen
