WELCOME HOME TO JESUS THE DIVINE WORD CHURCH!

As we interact responsibly with one another during this pandemic, we at Jesus the Divine Word welcome all who are new to our faith

community, returning to the Catholic Church, searching for a spiritual home or simply visiting with us at this time. We are glad you are with us. We understand the difficulties associated with these days and want you to feel welcome and at home whether you

are with us physically or through live-stream. It is a blessing to have you here.

If you are interested in learning more about our parish or registering as a parishioner, we invite you to contact our pastor, Fr. John Dakes at [email protected] or any member of our parish staff at

410-414-8304. We also invite you to view other areas of our website - www.jesusdivineword.org – and to download our registration form, the link of

which is on the front page of the website. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. Welcome!

Dear Friends,

In these days of electronic everything, do you ever get the feeling that maybe “Big Brother” is watching? Since turning sixty I’ve been noticing that my memory isn’t as sharp as it was when I was fifty. I’ve also noticed a lot of commercials for Prevagen, a dietary supplement for mild memory loss associated with aging. Coincidence? I’m not so sure. What I am sure about, though, is that the first servant in Jesus’ parable today could have used some Prevagen himself.

Having been approached with the question of how often to forgive, Jesus replies, “not seven times but seventy-seven times,” illustrating his answer by stepping into his role as storyteller. In the parable “a king . . . decided to settle accounts with his servants.” Learning of one servant who owes “a huge amount,” the king decides to sell him along with his entire family and all he possesses. Imagine the servant’s distress. He pleads for leniency and the king relents; his heart is moved with compassion, forgiving everything the guy owes. Talk about generosity!! This however is when some Prevagen may have been helpful.

Leaving his audience with the king, the servant encounters a co-worker who owes him very little, a mere sum in comparison, and becomes violent. We are told “he seized him and started to choke him, demanding ‘Pay back what you owe.’” How different this scene is from the first and it only gets worse. Unable to pay, this second servant also asks for leniency. Did he get it? Not at all; forgetting how the king treated him, the first servant has his co-worker thrown in jail. What memory loss.

The parable is another attempt by Jesus to teach the importance of mercy. As God our King has limitless mercy upon us, never tiring of forgiving us whenever we approach him, so we, God’s servants are to do likewise. We are called to have “a kingly heart.” It may not be easy; it may entail time and effort; we may even be counseled by others to hold onto our grudge. Yet, to withhold forgiveness from another – whoever that other may be - when we ask God for it repeatedly is a sign of our own need for Prevagen as well as a sign of hypocrisy and ungratefulness. It can cut us off from God. An unforgiving heart is toxic; a forgiving heart is freeing. Is there someone who has wronged you that you have yet to forgive? Pray to forgive; ask for God’s kingly heart. Remember what God has done for you and do likewise.

Peace and blessings, Fr. John

LIVING THE WORD Week of September 13

Theme: A Kingly Heart

“So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart. ” Matthew 18:35

Challenge: Reach out with an open and sincere heart showing mercy

to one who has wronged you.

Welcome Home - Stage Three As a result of improved COVID-19 health metrics across the state, Governor Hogan

moved Maryland into Stage Three of the “Maryland Strong: Roadmap to Recovery” on Friday, September 4th. For churches this means we may increase our capacity to

75%. However, we must still follow all CDC, State and local guidelines which still require facecloths/masks for everyone at Mass (except infants and toddlers) and maintaining 6 feet distance between individuals/households. In reality, very little

has changed for us. All safety precautions must still be followed. We have opened up additional chairs in the church to accommodate more people, but those chairs will be kept at a safe distance from others. We continue to take seriously the physical and

spiritual health of our parishioners and wants to be sure that at no time is someone at risk while in our church. Everyone’s participation in following all the guidelines as

well as the instruction of the ushers is essential for this to occur. For further information regarding participation please see the parish website. Until further

notice the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation is still in effect.

As a reminder, weekday Masses are celebrated Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 AM with Saturday Morning Mass at 9:00 AM. Sunday Masses are currently celebrated at 5:00 PM on Saturday and 10:00 AM on Sunday. Doors open 30 minutes before Mass. Parishioners may choose to sit in the church (as long as there is room) or go

directly to Doran Hall. Both weekend Masses are live streamed. As participation in Mass continues to grow we will evaluate the addition of another Sunday Mass. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated on Wednesday evenings from

7:00 – 8:00 PM and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 PM between the priest vesting sacristy and Fr. John’s office. Confessions are celebrated either

face-to-face or with anonymity, all depending on the desire of the penitent. Appointments are also welcomed.

Parish offices are in full operation – with the exception of the parish secretary (please see the notice contained in the bulletin) with most staff working remotely, though with

limited office hours. The best way to reach them is still through e-mail. All appointments need to be set up in advance through a phone call or e-mail that

proper safety procedures can be guaranteed. Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding.

CRITICALLY ILL or HOSPITALIZED during the CORONAVIRUS?

Caring for the sick is an important ministry of the Church. In this ministry the Church prays for the sick, visits the

sick, provides the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum (one’s last Communion), if a person is dying.

Though we are living in very unusual times at the present due to the coronavirus, we are still committed to ensuring that no one who is sick will be neglected.

If a person is critically ill or dying we are asking that a family member notify the parish office as soon as possible by calling 410-414-8304 and speaking with

either Fr. John (ext. 11) or Bobbie Woollen (ext. 10).

A reminder, too, that the parish emergency phone number (to be used only when someone is critically ill or dying) is 443-624-2692.

Please call only, do not text (it’s a flip phone). Please note, too, that clergy are required to follow certain directives at the hospital and nursing home at this time

and that those directives could change. Thank you.

SEPTEMBER CHANGES

Please note that the parish office has limited staff coverage. The parish secretary, Bobbie Woollen, is on administrative leave to work with her son as he begins online learning. We ask that you please email or call

before stopping by so we can assure there is someone to help. The office hours will be:

Tuesday - Friday 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Phone calls will go directly to each staff member’s office (or voicemail). Many of the staff are working remotely with some in-office hours, so they may not get a

voicemail as fast as they would an email. We suggest sending an email for a quicker response. Father John schedules his own appointments, so please email

or call him directly. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy

Cross celebrates two historical events: the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena,

the mother of the Emperor Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and the dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine

built on Calvary by Constantine, which mark

the site of the Crucifixion.

The basilica, named the Martyrium, and the shrine, named the Calvarium, were destroyed by the

Persians in 614. The Church of the Holy

sepulcher which now stands on the site was

built by the crusaders in 1149.

However the feast, more than anything else, is a

celebration and commemoration of God's

greatest work: his salvific death on the

Cross and His Resurrection, through

which death was defeated and the doors to

Heaven opened. The entrance antiphon

for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy

Cross is: "We should glory in the cross of our Lord

Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and

our resurrection: through him we are

saved and made free." (Catholic News Agency)

The process is quick and easy, taking only a few minutes, and it can be done from the safety and security

of home.

Simply go to 2020census.gov and click on “Respond.” You will need a twelve digit census number. Numbers were mailed to homes earlier this year

or left at your door.

Participate today in the 2020 census. It will help our county, our state and our nation.

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the seven great sorrows

which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospels

or through Tradition. Today we are invited to reflect on Mary's deep

suffering:

1. At the prophecy of Simeon: "You yourself shall be pierced with a

sword - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid

bare." (Luke 2:35).

2. At the flight into Egypt; "Get up, take the child and

his mother, and flee to Egypt." (Mt 2:13).

3. Having lost the Holy

Child at Jerusalem; "You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow." (Luke

2:48).

4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary

5. Standing at the foot of the Cross; "Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." (John 19:25).

6. Jesus being taken from

the Cross

7. At the burial of Christ.

PARISH HAPPENINGS

There was no pope for 14 months after the martyrdom of

St. Fabian because of the intensity of the persecution of the Church. During the interval, the Church was governed by a college of priests. Saint Cyprian, a friend of Cornelius, writes that Cornelius was

elected pope “by the judgment of God and of Christ, by the testimony of most of the clergy, by the vote of the people, with the consent of aged

priests and of good men.”

The greatest problem of Cornelius’s two-year term as pope had to do with the Sacrament of Penance and centered on the readmission of Christians who had denied their faith during the time of persecution. Two extremes

were finally both condemned. Cyprian, primate of North Africa, appealed to the pope to confirm his stand that the relapsed could be reconciled only by the decision of the bishop.

In Rome, however, Cornelius met with the opposite view. After his election, a priest named Novatian (one of

those who had governed the Church) had himself consecrated a rival bishop of Rome—one of the first antipopes. He denied that the Church had any power to reconcile the apostates. Cornelius had the support of

most of the Church (especially of Cyprian of Africa) in condemning Novatianism. A document from Cornelius shows the extent of organization in the Church of Rome in the mid-third century:

46 priests, seven deacons, seven subdeacons. It is estimated that the number of Christians totaled about 50,000. He died as a result of the hardships of his exile in what is now Civitavecchia.
