Kesä oli poikkeuksellisen kuuma ja kuiva Brittiläisessä Kolumbiassa. Suomessa samaan aikaan koettiin taas erityisen kolea ja sateinen kesä. Lukuisat lomalaiset eivät päässeet Suomen suvessa juurikaan nautti-maan aurinkoisista säistä. Loppujen lopuksi Suomen viileä ilma oli pieni murheen aihe tämän maan kuivuuden ja siitä johtuneiden lukemattomien metsäpalojen rinnalla. Leikin lasku on kaukana oman kodin tuhoutuessa ja evakkoreissun alkaessa keskellä kirkasta päivää. Tällaisia kohtaloita nähtiin valitetta-vasti tämän kesän uutisissa. Kenties tulipalot olivat joidenkin Ystäväkirjeen lukijoidenkin riesana. Elämään liittyy kokonainen joukko epävarmuustekijöitä, joiden hallitseminen ei ole aina omassa varassa. Erilaisissa murros- ja muutosvaiheissa tarvitaan tukea ja myö-tätuntoa lähimmäisiltä. Toisen ihmisen osaan asettumisessa on kyse Jeesuksen kultaisen säännön toteuttamisesta: ”Kaikki, minkä tahdotte ihmisten tekevän teille, tehkää te heille.” (Matt. 7:12) Suomalaisten yhtenä vahvuutena on pidetty yhteistyötä ja kave-rista huolehtimista. Vancouverin kaikilla kanadansuomalaisilla yhteisöillä on arvokas ja merkittävä rooli erilaisissa ihmisen hyvin-vointiin ja elämänlaatuun liittyvissä asioissa. Tarvitsemme toinen toistemme tukea. Tarvitsemme myös toivoa, joka tulee ihmisen ulkopuolelta. Tuttu virsi muistuttaa rukouk-sen merkityksestä ja turvautumisesta Jumalan apuun: ”Kun on turva Jumalassa, turvassa on paremmassa.” (Virsi 397). ”Onnellinen se, jonka auttaja on Jaakobin Jumala, onnellinen se, joka turvaa Herraan, Jumalaansa.” (Ps. 146:5) Ihminen tarvitsee elämäänsä tarkoitusta ja tyytyväisyyden aiheita. Raamatun luomiskertomuksessa ”Jumala katsoi kaikkea tekemäänsä, ja kaikki oli hyvää.” (1. Moos 1:31). Jumala oli siis tyytyväinen tekemäänsä. Toivottavasti mekin voisimme nähdä elämän epävarmuuden ja sen huolien keskellä myös hyviä asioita ja kiitoksen aiheita. Toivottavasti voisimme nähdä lähimmäisemme uusin silmin ja kokea kuinka turvamme on elävässä Jumalassa.

1) Who are you and where are you from? - My name is Tuuli Torkkeli and I am from a small village called Haus-järvi which is in Finland. 2) How would you describe yourself? - I am cheerful and most of the time smiling and/or

laughing. I like to think positively about life and that everything happens for a reason. I am extrovert and social young woman and I don't like to leave anyone behind. 3) What are your expectations during intern-ship? - My biggest hope is to get to know God better, learn about and from him. I expect to learn new things about youth work, meet new people and I am more than excited if I can change someone’s life to the right direction. 4) What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? - I sing, play guitar and piano. Also I like to walk in the nature, watch documenta-ries, listen and make music and spend time with my friends and family. 5) What is your favorite Bible verse? - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Tuuli is arriving Vancouver on early October. 36th Emmaus Summer camp greetings!

I would like to say my warmest thanks to all of you who participated in this year’s Summer camp. As you know, we had to find a new location for our camp with short notice. Despite all the challenges it turned out we had a very special camp in Vedder River Campground. We noticed it was not the location or weather what makes the camp but people and above all God’s goodness! I think we also had a good program for every age. I especially enjoyed our youth’s talents and how they guided the little ones. Such great role models! Also we had a special program for adults this summer. There are so many people I could name and say thanks, but I think it was about all of us. I do realize that during past decades our Summer camps have been more crowded. I know this kind of trend is not surprising within Finnish based churches abroad. Still I believe we could have more people who could join us and help us to create a very special camp together. So...think already about next summer and take this message as an early reminder for the 37th Summer camp! We are really looking forward to seeing you there! Blessings, Pastor Timo
