celebrated on 16th September.

Dear Friends,Dear Friends,Dear Friends,Dear Friends,
I hope you all have been able to enjoy the fine summer weather we have had this
year. On a fine day Paul and I headed down to Whithorn and St Ninian’s Cave. It is
said of St Ninian, who arrived on the pebbly beach somewhere between 378 and
397, that with the erection of Candida Casa, (White House) established the first
Christian church in Scotland. It is said that the cave on a pebbly beach is where he
used to go and pray by himself. The cave itself is not very large and certainly
wouldn’t be where he lived when he first landed as once was suggested. In going
to be alone to pray Ninian was following Jesus’ example:
But now more than ever the word about Jesus spread abroad; many
crowds would gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases.
But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray. (Luke 5)
Praying is a vital part of our Christian life, praying collectively in church and
praying individually. Making time to pray even if we don’t head for a beach or cave
is something that we should all do on a daily basis, however it is often something
that people struggle with. St Ninian reminds us that one of the ways to make that
easier is to withdraw so that we can concentrate on God. For us, centuries later,
our retreating into a cave is maybe achieved by switching off the phone, the TV,
the radio, shutting the door of the room we are in if others are in the house and
saying that you don’t want to be disturbed. If you find that your mind races with
things you are concerned you might forget, have a pen and paper so you can jot
them down and deal with them once you have finished praying. Make sure you are
comfortable, daily prayer shouldn’t be a penance but a joy and something that
sustains and strengthens us, if you are uncomfortable then you will be rushing to
finish. God is always there for us, we should be able to at least give a small part of
our day over to God. Of course the most important part of prayer isn’t recalling a
list of the things we think God should be dealing with, but rather listening for
guidance as to what we should be doing. As Jesus prayed in the Garden of
Gethsemene: “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will
but yours be done.” (Luke 22.42)
As the season changes from Summer to Autumn there is one constant, just as
there was back in the time of St Ninian, God is always there. All we need to do is
remember to set time aside and pray and listen to the guiding of the Holy Spirit so
we can faithfully, like Ninian, follow in Christ’s footsteps.
The church remembers Ninian, the first of Scotland’s saints, on 16th
September.

STEWARDSHIP 2014
The All Saints’ Vestry has again designated September as a month in which we will
focus on Stewardship. The campaign will culminate on October 5th
at the Harvest
Thanksgiving Service. Special material has been prepared and will be available
throughout September. Reflections on stewardship will feature in services and the
following Stewardship Campaign Prayer will be said each week, and you might
wish to reflect upon it in your personal prayers:
Almighty God, You have made us members of Christ and of His
Church, and have taught us through Him that it is more blessed to
give than to receive. Make us truly thankful for all Your goodness;
help us to be faithful stewards of the time, talents and money You
have given us; and guide us in all things to know and do Your will, for
the honour and glory of your name.
Amen.
OCTOBER MAGAZINE Please send all items for the October magazine to Janet Stack
([email protected]) by Sunday 21st
September at the latest.

SUNSHINE BAGS
We have had many sunny days this summer, so our sunshine bags should be
bulging. They are due to be returned on Harvest Sunday, October 5th
. There will be
a basket at the back of the Church to receive the bags on your way in; then they
will be taken up to the Altar with the other harvest offerings. If you have made a
Gift Aid declaration to All Saints and use the Free Will Offering envelopes, then
please put a slip of paper in the bag with your number on it. If you donate by
bankers order, please put in a slip of paper with your name on it. This way,
anything we put in the Sunshine bags will miraculously increase by 25% and
generate even more income for the Church.
If you were unable to collect a Sunshine bag at Easter, it is not too late! Just ask
the sidesmen who will have some extra bags on hand, or you can speak to me at
any time.

ALL SAINTS VESTRY NOTES
The All Saints Vestry met on July 14th
2014. Here is a summary of two of the
points discussed:
• The Vestry reviewed the outcome of the unrehearsed fire drill held a few
weeks before during the 11 am service. Several points had come to light,
notably the absence of any instructions on evacuation and particularly the
lack of any information about where the assembly point thereafter should
be. Andrew Long agreed to draft a note about fire precautions and about
action to be taken in the case of a fire.
• The 2014 Stewardship Campaign to be held in September was discussed,
with Rob Smith, Chair of the Stewardship Committee, reporting on their
proposals. The campaign would open on August 31st
and culminate in a
Harvest/Stewardship lunch after the Harvest Festival. Details would be given
in the September Magazine.
The Vestry did not meet during August. Its next meeting will be on 8th
September
2014.

MINISTRY CELEBRATION SERVICE Saturday 20th September 2014
St John’s Episcopal Church
2-6 Newall Terrace
Dumfries
DG1 1LW
A light lunch at 12 noon followed by the service at 1.15 p.m. All welcome
A letter will be sent to the charges soon requesting details of those intending to
join with the Bishop to celebrate their gift of service to our church in lay, licensed
and authorised ministry, along with those who wish to support them in their rôle
by their presence alongside them.
At this time we would ask that those intended recipients of the invitation please
put the date firmly in your diary.
IN TUNE WITH GLASGOW 2014
On one of the warmest nights of the year, 23rd
July, some of us from All Saints’
attended a concert held in St. Mary’s Cathedral organised by Mothers’ Union to
celebrate their work across the Commonwealth. The music was played by Glasgow
Senior Citizens’ Orchestra and Clyde Coast Strathspey and Reel Society with
Scottish dancers too. During the interval, when refreshments were served, we
could view the excellent tapestry done by Scottish schools from the region.
Before the final Dashing White Sergeant, when the audience could join in, Ann
Glenesk (MU’s diocesan president) spoke and introduced two members from the
Ugandan team who said what a wonderful welcome they were having in Glasgow.
It was a fun evening and ended with the whole audience joining in Auld Lang Syne.
Quite a buzz!

BEING A LEADER AT GLEN ’14 Returning to Glenalmond as a leader at Glen’14, after having been a delegate
there for a number of years, was at times surreal. People, who had inspired me,
encouraged me and furthered my knowledge of Christ and my relationship with
Him whilst I was a delegate, didn’t stop when I then turned into a fellow leader. As
the delegates themselves taught me something new, so did the leaders with their
encouragement. The week was jam-packed with House Group sessions, activities
throughout the day and brilliant Worships, led by delegates. Dry weather meant
that worships and activities took place outside on the enchanting campus of
Glenalmond College.
The theme for the week was “The life of Jesus and reflecting on our own life
story”. It would be discussed in House Groups and helped delegates to organise
their night for leading the Worship. I helped to run the afternoon sessions which,
split into three different activity slots, provided swimming, rounders, croquet,
debates, meditation, poetry and much more. Every night of the week there were
different events, which leaders helped to run smoothly in the background.
Provided with good chat, time flew and with a sense of unity, the workload was
made lighter.
This year was not only different as I came back as a leader of the Camp but, my
sister Lois, had now become a delegate! She may have been a little nervous at the
start, but by the end of the week it was difficult to prise her away from her new-
found friends. I felt very blessed to work alongside such gifted people and be
leader for young adolescents who are so bright and going along the path towards
Christ. It’s the people who make Glen and it is wonderful that the Scottish
Episcopal Church has such an experience to offer young folk. I heartily encourage
any 12-18 year olds to go along next year to Glen ’15 and see for themselves!

WEDNESDAY LUNCH GROUP’S VISIT TO LARGS
Although the Wednesday lunch group had not met regularly during July and
August, on August 6th
it held a day trip to Largs.
Lunch was still the focus and we duly convened
at 12.30 at Nardini’s where we enjoyed a fish and
chip lunch followed by a flute of Nardini’s famous
ice-cream. Although the morning had been
drizzly with the mist
down over the
moors, while we
were dining the
clouds rolled away and we were able to enjoy a stroll
in the sunshine before returning to Glasgow with
friendships renewed.
Andrew Long
The lunches will start again on Wednesday 17th
September, 12 noon to 2 p.m. The
usual menu of soup and fresh filled rolls will be served. We look forward to
welcoming you and your friends.

CHARITY DAY TO REMEMBER SUE CLARKE A wonderful day was held by the ladies who worked with Sue at the College of
Surgeons and Physicians in Glasgow. A splendid
high tea was served, with stalls, a wonderful
musical interlude and probably the largest raffle
that has ever taken place with over 50 prizes!
All those who went along enjoyed a fitting
memory to Sue full of joy and laughter, music and
making new friends. The final total isn’t yet
known but it is in excess of £1,600. Sue would
have been both surprised and delighted.
A big thank you to Val and the girls in the office, to the
College for allowing their fine building to be used, to
those who baked or made items for sale, to all those
who provided our music be it through voice or by
tinkling the ivories of their fine grand piano, to those
who donated raffle prizes and of course to all those
who came along and made the day so special.

MEMORY OF SUMMER AT ST ANDREW'S
We had a barbecue in the garden after the
Sunday School gift giving in late June.
The weather was perfect to sit in the garden.
Tables and garden chairs were put out after the
service during tea/coffee time.
Robert, ably assisted
by George, had the
barbecue going and a
wonderful aroma of
cooking meat – hamburgers – filled the air.
There were also hot dogs and
quiche (cleverly warmed up on
the 'barbie') and salad;
followed by mouth-watering
desserts and marshmallows to
toast for the younger
generation.
It was lovely to have young and not so young enjoying
each others' company and laughing at each others' efforts to stay clean!!! Marie Milne
ST ANDREW’S BOOK GROUP
The book for the August meeting, recently, was Half of a Yellow Sun by
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This was her second novel and
it won the Orange Prize for fiction in 2007.
It is based around a love story of twin sisters in the period
of Nigeria's Colonial independence and through the Nigeria-
Biafra war of 1967-1970. For the first time, I think, we had
out the large Times Atlas to see the towns/cities mentioned
in the book and so a bit of a geography lesson as well as
political and history lesson was learned while reading a
fictional account.
Not a heavy book but one which caused pause for thought,
especially to those of us who did not know much about this
time in Africa's history.
Next book is George Eliot's Silas Marner, first published in 1861, for the mid-
September meeting.

To know where you are going it is helpful to know where you’ve
come from. In this lecture Bishop Gregor will trace the emergence
and development of Episcopalianism in Scotland from the
reformation era to the present day.
Opportunities will be given for questions of clarification during the
lecture.

THE REFERENDUM The Joint Liturgical Group of Great Britain, on which the Scottish Episcopal Church
is represented, has written a prayer, inspired by Psalm 104, to be said at the time
of the Scottish Independence Referendum:
Lord, we bless you for you have fashioned our land and daily refresh it;
you have sent forth your spirit and created us;
you have opened your hand and filled us with good things.
Bless us, your people, as we consider the future of our nation.
May your glory endure here for ever and may we sing to you as long as we
live;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.
POST-REFERENDUM DISCUSSION
There will be a Post-Referendum Discussion in St Silas, on the afternoon of
Saturday 8th
November, at which all of the Diocese will be invited to review the
outcome, the effects on the SEC and what contribution we can make to Post-
Referendum Scotland.
ST ANDREW'S DORCAS GROUP Dorcas is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as a dressmaker of high renown
(she is sometimes also referred to as Tabitha) and for centuries Christian women
have met in her name for fellowship and to make items, not just sewing, knitting,
crochet, and other crafts. The initial meeting of St Andrew's Dorcas Group took
12
place at the Rectory when we decided what Christmas themed things we could
make to tempt those who come along to the Coffee Morning in November.
The next meeting will be at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 2nd
September after which the
plan is to meet fortnightly on Wednesdays until the Coffee Morning, after which
we will make a decision as to how often we will meet. Anyone who is interested is
more than welcome to come along, you don't need to be able to sew or knit.
ST ANDREW'S HARVEST LUNCH The Harvest Lunch at St Andrew's this year will take place at 12:30 on Saturday 4
th
October and will take the form of a ‘Bring and Share’. Bring yourselves, your family
and friends along with a dish of food to share with everyone.
ST ANDREW'S AGM After much discussion by the vestry it was decided that the AGM would be held on
the later than usual date of Saturday 8th
November at 12:30 p.m., i.e. after the
Coffee Morning

think) Susan’s red hair. She is called Sophia Andriani – another
grand-daughter for John and Susan. Congratulations all round!

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY SCHOOL
The Sunday School at All Saints is looking for some volunteers to be present to
comply with PVG guidelines. There is no requirement to lead the Sunday School,
unless you wish to of course, however you will need to have a disclosure done if
you don't currently have one. Please speak to Laura Trainer, Jane Joy, Fiona
Hempel or Kirstin if you can help or would like more information. Thank you.
CHILDREN’S CORNER
September 16th – The Feast Day of St Ninian St Ninian was an early missionary to the Pictish people in
what is now Scotland. Not much is known of him but he
was believed to be a Briton educated in Rome and may
have been the son of a Christian king. He was also known
for his miracles one of which was curing a chieftain of
blindness.
Back to
School
Hope you all had a
fantastic summer
holiday and did lots
of exciting things.
Now it’s time to go
back to school and
that can be just as
exciting – catching
up with old friends,
meeting new friends
and teachers, learn-
ing new things. So
we hope you are all
looking forward to
the new school year.
14
Giving to God our talents
One of the Church’s themes for September is remembering and thanking God for
the talents and gifts he has blessed us with.
1 Peter 4:1 – “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good
stewards of God’s varied grace”.
God has made us all unique. We are all good at some things and not so good at
others. It is important for us all to try and improve on those things we don’t do so
well, but it is also important to celebrate and thank God for all the things we do do
well.
What are your talents and how can you share them with others?
Are you a good reader? Maybe you can read a bedtime story
to your younger brother or sister or do a reading at the next
All Age Worship.
Are you good at writing? Maybe you could write about
something you did on holiday to go in this magazine next
month.
Are you good at sport? Maybe you could get your parents to
sponsor you to run or swim or skip a certain distance and
donate the money you raise to a charity
Happy Birthday to: Megan 1st September
A big Thank You to all the children and helpers who have worked together over
the summer to create the new Noah’s Ark mural in All Saints Sunday School. Look
out for the article and photo of the finished product in next month’s magazine!
Remember - show any of your completed puzzles or pictures to one of the Sunday
School leaders and you might just get a prize.
