-The writer or speaker statesfact after fact as they occur,

seemingly freely and artlessly.

-A loose sentence, also called

a cumulative sentence,begins with a main clause thatis followed by phrases and/or

clauses that modify the mainclause. These phrases orclauses add information to the

main or independent clause.

1. I went to the movies yesterday,bought candy, and shopped at themall.

2. He might consider paying thehigher fees at a private university, ifthe teacher/student ratio is small,the teachers are highly qualified,and the job placement rate is high.

sometimes known asparallelism or antithesis

grammatical structure:

a paired construction.

-A balanced sentence that

makes a contrast iscalled antithesis.

-A periodic sentence has the

main clause or predicate at

the end. This is used foremphasis and can bepersuasive by putting reasons

for something at the beginningbefore the final point is made.It can also create suspense or

interest for the reader.
