Learning English in Malta

Malta offers English language students all the ingredients for a productive, enjoyable and

memorable experience. The islands’ warm climate, 7000 years of history, a rich cultural

heritage and warm and friendly people provide an excellent context for learning English.

Malta’s English-speaking heritage, where English is an official language alongside Maltese,

is the cherry on the cake! The island has been hosting English language students for

almost half a century, and has gained a reputation as a centre of excellence for learning

English.

The Maltese are generally

known for their hospitality

Fact

The islands of Malta are situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, some 100 km from Sicily and just over 200 km from Tunisia.

Malta, an independent Republic, is a member of the European Union and the British Commonwealth.

Malta’s population is around 405,000.

Blessed with sun throughout the year and set in crystal clear waters, Malta and its sister islands of Gozo and Comino offer an all round experience where complete relaxation can easily give way to one’s urge to discover their many cultural, artistic and natural treasures. Though essentially Mediterranean in character, the islands are also steeped in British tradition, thus giving visiting students the best of both cultures. Moreover, the unique blend of the traditional and the cosmopolitan, of rural tranquillity and the buzz of a sea resort, will certainly give you something to write home about!

With the Maltese islands being just a few hours away from most major European airports, and with the many scheduled, low-cost and chartered flights linking Malta to a host of European and other countries, getting here could not be easier.

Language LevelsIn recent years, the Council of Europe and the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) have been working to define language competency levels for learners of a number of different languages. The result of these efforts is the Common European Framework (a document setting out in detail what students ‘can do’ at various levels) and a series of ALTE levels ranging from A1 (roughly equivalent to elementary level) to C2 (very advanced). The ALTE statements for general overall ability give students clear statements of ability against which to measure themselves. It should be remembered that to get a true overall assessment students have to be able to meet the criteria of all the skills and not just listening/speaking, or speaking in isolation to any other skill.

Standard Courses

ESE offers a range of courses which are designed to improve your proficiency in the English language. These programmes vary in terms of learning levels, duration and the number of participants in each class.

These courses are designed to improve your general proficiency in English, and cover the four basic skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing) as well as grammar, vocabulary, and fluency development. These courses vary in terms of learning levels, duration and the number of participants in each class. Courses are tailored to suit the needs of students in a particular class.

1. General English

20 or 30 lessons per week

Maximum 10 students per class

This is a combination course consisting of a General English course in the morning and private lessons (one-to-one teaching) in the afternoon (10 lessons per week). This course is ideal for students who want to improve their general spoken English while focusing on an area of particular interest.

2. Intensive English

20 General English lessons + 10 individual lessons per week

Maximum 10 students per class (General English lessons) and individual tuition in the afternoon

3. Private Tuition

10 (min.) to 40 (max.) lessons per week

Individual tuition

This course is specif ically designed and recommended for clients who have limited time available for study and wish to make the maximum progress in the minimum time available. You will have continuous monitoring and evaluation of your progress with your own tutor who will be chosen to meet your special needs.

4. Academic Year

30 lessons per week

Maximum 10 students per class

Academic Year courses are designed for students who want to study for extended periods or study at university where English is a requirement of entry. This could include one semester or the full academic year course of two semesters. Totalling six or nine months. The courses commence in January and September. The course syllabus combines an extensive English programme with a cultural one. The core curriculum concentrates on the four essential skills necessary to enable learners to communicate in English. In addition to the four skills (Speaking – Listening – Reading – Writing) students will be taught study skills to encourage and enable them to become more effective and efficient learners. There will be a focus on pronunciation and grammar will be taught in context. A typical day at ESE is split into three one-hour sessions in the morning and a further 1.5 hours in the afternoon. In addition to joining other students on afternoon activities AYC students will have free activities such as film shows and organised walks. Towards the end of their 6 or 9 month course students will have a choice of entering either the Cambridge Main Suite Examinations, the TOEFL iBT or the IELTS Examination preparation course (subject to students being at the appropriate entry level). Examination fees will apply. Students choosing not to study for an examination course will join a General English 30 Course appropriate to their level. Students who are not able to start on the START DATES may join the AYC at the school’s discretion.

5. Miniclass

30 lessons per week

Maximum 6 students per class

A miniclass is similar to a General English course but it is a smaller group and it is for a longer period. This ensures more student-teacher interaction time for one’s personal needs and requirements.

16

Examination Courses

At ESE you can choose either the TOEFL iBT, the IELTS or one of the Cambridge examination courses. In all courses, your teacher will prepare you through practical course work geared to the requirements of the particular examination and through the development of effective study skills and exam techniques.

Accommodation

At ESE we offer a range of different accommodation options all with excellent facilities.

We believe that student accommodation is an integral part of the course so it is important

for ESE to know that students have a comfortable and welcoming place to stay in.

Host Families

The ESE team includes highly experienced

staff members who inspect all host famlies

associated with the school. The selection

of host families is made on the basis of very

stringent criteria of cleanliness, comfort and

warmth of their welcome. Living with a host

family offers students an opportunity to practise

English in a friendly environment and to learn

about Maltese culture and society at first hand.

ESE selects its host families after a thorough

screening procedure which includes interviews

and inspection. When placing students with

host families, ESE takes into consideration any

special requirements students may have, such

as dietary restrictions.

After we started hosting students, I found meeting different people from all over the world so fascinating. Adapting to a different culture and language is challenging especially when students are not fluent in English. But, watching them progress during their stay, and helping them improve, gives me the chance to get to know them better!

Host Family Caruana (Malta)

Hosting students gives us the possibility to meet people from all over the world from our home. We love to exchange our traditions, history and experiences as well as make new friends. Our students are more than just guests... they soon become family!

Host Family Bilocca (Malta)

To be able to enjoy a diversity of cultures in our home makes hosting students an incredible experience for us. The fact that I am a “real people” person is great. Our students are not just students, they are our family and we love them! Host Family Micallef (Malta)
