Kathleen StapletonChairman of the Board of Directors

2012 could not have been the incredible year that it was without you. We served nearly 22,000 individuals in the greater Denver Metro area— signicantly more people than last year.

Our employees make a difference in the lives of our clients. Their strong commitment and desire to provide one-on-one service to each and every individual enhances the quality of our agency every day. With their help, we had many accomplishments in 2012 and we look forward to achieving even more in 2013.

WWe invite you to help us keep seniors happy at home; thriving in their communities with the assistance of our programs. We invite you to help us hold the hands of your loved ones with care. Help them get to their doctor appointments, or help them thrive at home, with the assistance of a primary care provider. Help them smile more with visits from our volunteers. Help them stay safe.

We invite you to help your grandmother, neighbor, uncle or aunt by trusting in us and our services. Seniors’ Resource Center cannot do it without you.

18 Pounds & CountingBrice is an 89 year old man who lives alone. Two years ago, he had a stroke and lost 50 pounds. He also is ghting prostate cancer.

Carl is a Personal Care Provider for Seniors’ Resource Center and goes to visit and take care of Brice every day for three hours. Carl’s goal is for everyone around him to get better; physically and emotionally.

“I just love people,” Carl said. “I think it is a challenge taking care of anyone. But when people get to be elderly, there is only so much they can do. Brice has nobody to help him and he wants to stay in his own house. How can yyou be around all these elderly people and see what they need, and not do something about it?”

Ever since Carl has visited Brice, Brice’s has regained a lot of his health and has gained over 18 pounds. He awaitshis 90th birthday in good health and spirit; in great part due to Carl’s enthusiastic and caring visits.

“I’m amazed at what he can do for himself, but when Brice needs me, I come anytime 7 days a week,” said Carl. “I do whatever it takes to keep him in his home.”

And, that is also the goal of Seniors’ Resource Center: to do whdo whatever it takes to keep seniors in their home.

“I only wish more people knew about SRC,” Debbie said. “It’s truly the best thing that’s happened to us.”

John was diagnosed 5 years ago with early onset Alzheimer’s and now at age 65 the disease has severely progressed. Fortunately, John attends Seniors’ Resource Center’s (SRC) Adult Day Program at least twice a week. In turn, his time at SRC gives his wife Debbie who cares for him, a small break.

Debbie, who is now 60, continues to work. She is determined to keep him in their home but knows she needs help. Prior to attending SRC’s Adult Day Program, John’s appetite was decreasing and he was sleeping a lot more. He was struggling and Debbie was getting overwhelmed. SRC Adult Day helps to ll in the gaps.

“When he comes here, it’s like a whole new world,” Debbie said. “He is up and about dancing, his appetite has increased, and he does so much better.”

It’s been a challenging turn for both Debbie and John. Although he’s been safe at home where he wants to be, she constantly worries about him. The small break between her work and him coming home from Adult Day provides her only relief; a twenty minute nap. On average she gets about 3 hours of sleep a night.

With the help of SRC’s Adult Day Program, John is more active and he continues to be social and equally as important,Debbie gets some well deserved rest.

Adult Day & Respite Services offer day programs to assists older adults with physical and cognitive challenges, and young adults with developmental disabilities, remain in their own homes with their families. Friendly, compassionate and supportive staff cares for people with Alzheimer's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and other conditions.

Seniors’ Resource Center Transportation Services provide accessible and affordable door-through-door transportation to older adults and persons with mobility impairments in Adams, Clear Creek, Gilpin and Jefferson counties. Riders can travel with us to medical/dental appointments, grocery shopping, meal sites, community-based care programs and personal trips.

A Gold Medal Finds Its Marine Sgt. Major Archie Robinson had a near death experience earlier this year. He blacked out inside of his home and it took an SRC volunteer driver kicking the door in, in order to save his life. Since the incident Sgt. Major has graduated from using a wheelchair to a cane. He attends rehab twice a week and is able to get around safely. Doctors said he would be in the wheelchair for at least six months to a year butafter only three months, Sgt. Major regained mobility in his legs.

He prefers to go by Sgt. Major because he served in the Marines for 30 years. It was Oct. 9, 1946 when he enlishe enlisted, just four years after the Marine Corps began accepting African Americans to serve as Marines. He was part of the 20,000 African-American recruits that received training at Montford Point Camp. Sgt. Major’s most recent achievement was the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Even though he is 83 years old, he tells everybody he is 38.

“It’s like ipping a light switch,” he said. “Everybody says I should be in an assisted living because of that but I’m going to live the full life. I’m not going to give up my freedom.” SRC’s Transportation services aare the crucial piece in Sgt. Major staying in his home. Even though he would like to do everything for himself, he accepts the assistance and greatly appreciates it.

“I appreciate the help I get from SRC, since I can’t drive,” said Sgt. Major. “If it wasn’t for them I would have to catch a cab or not go to therapy at all.”
