Seniors’ Centre Without Walls 101 • You do not need to be a member of 55+ Centres for this free program • Programs are multi-person phone conversations (or conference calls) • No special equipment needed – just your average phone! • Phone session lasts between 30-60 minutes. • You are able to hear each other, talk to one another, learn have fun!

Fair Play Policy The goal of the City of Barrie Recreation Programs is to ensure all participants have a rewarding, memorable, safe and fun experience while participating in our programs. Providing a safe environment is a collaborative process. We ask that participants follow the following guidelines:

• Allow the Leader and Guest Speaker to lead the group

• Allow everyone to contribute. Try not to dominate the conversations

• To be courteous and respectful to others with limited interruptions

• To help provide an environment that is sensitive to, and respectful of, everyone’s needs and preferences, regardless of race, ethnic origin, culture, religion, age, mental or physical disability, gender identity or gender expression, or sexual orientation.

How to Access the Programs: To register email [email protected] or call 705-739-4223 and leave your first and last name, phone number and program(s) of interest and we will follow up with you. Programs are 30-60 minutes in length and will cover a variety of games and topics. See program schedule for times and program information.

Barrie Public Library Storytime for Grownups with the Barrie Public Library. Join the Library to listen to and discuss some of our favourite short stories, essays and poems. Offered Every Tuesday BINGO All you need is a deck of cards to join in the fun! Different variations will be played all done with a deck of 52 cards. Join us for a fun hour! 55+ Member Reconnection Are you a member of the Parkview and/or Allandale 55+ Centre? This is an opportunity to connect with members, friends and staff to find out what we have been up too! Meaningful Movement for Physical Health Learn from a home care physiotherapist who is passionate about seniors' health and wellbeing. We will talk about the impact of aging and some common conditions, as well as the types of physical activities and resources that are typically helpful for older adults to restore and maintain healthy living in the community. Gilbert Centre Information Session Gilbert Centre for Social and Support Services provides programming for many marginalized communities across Simcoe County and Muskoka. Join Evan McCraney, Seniors Program Coordinator, and learn about the centre and the programming offered to 2SLGBTQ+ seniors (55+) in the area, and why it’s important to build community for this population.

Healthy Aging Series – VON August 20th - Bone Health The goal of this class is to inform the group about healthy bones and the need to have a fracture risk assessment. The role of calcium, vitamin D, exercise, osteoporosis medications and fall prevention are discussed in relation to preventing fractures. Age Friendly Fridays Come join us on Friday, July 3rd, July 17th or July 31st to share your ideas/feedback about what you think we need in the City of Barrie to make our community an Age-Friendly place to live. Service Canada Join a Service Canada representative as we discuss the services and programs available to seniors. Aging in Place Join us as we discuss aging in place, downsizing for a safe home. Barrie Transit Chat with Barrie Transit! Current rider, former rider, future rider? Let’s explore the City of Barrie’s transit system together. Collectively we will get to know the transit system in greater detail, along with a weekly question & answer segment.

Mindfulness for Health & Hope This half-hour audio program will provide inspiring messages for these trying times, and simple exercises and guided meditation for well-being. For the best experience, sit in a straight-backed chair with feet grounded, with a warm shawl or sweater and a pen and paper at hand. Led by Lynne Marshall Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario August 12th- Protect Yourself from Covid-19 Fraud & Scams - Many people are understandably concerned about their health and well-being during these times of uncertainty. Unfortunately, fraudsters are using COVID-19 as an opportunity to trick the public, with seniors being most vulnerable. It is becoming difficult to identify fraudulent activities from legitimate ones with new technology, so it is important to stay aware and take precautions to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe. August 19th – Protect Yourself Financial Abuse You will learn how to recognize risk factors, learn the red flags and respond to the many forms of financial abuse. We will highlight current trends that are targeting vulnerable older adults. You will learn common factors behind financial abusers' behavior, circumstances that can lead to financial abuse and what we all can do to prevent financial abuse and encourage healthy relationships. August 26th- Building Healthy Relationships Whether it’s looking for a companion or a new life partner, an increasing number of older adults are turning to the internet to find a match. In fact, senior dating is the fastest growing subsection of online dating. You will learn ways to be precautious and help ensure you have a safe and enjoyable online dating experience.

Effective Communication for Older Adults during COVID-19 This session will provide an opportunity to discuss hearing loss issues and the added challenges of COVID -19 that make Communication even more difficult Find out how to maximize every conversation! Moderated by Ross Hart, Hearing Care Counsellor, Canadian Hearing Services Service Barrie Questions, Complaints, Compliments and more! Are you baffled by who to call to answer your questions about City of Barrie Services?
