Weareproudoftheseniorclassof2020,andwesay“Congratula:ons!”Whenitcomestohonoringthisgradua:ngclass,ourFCAstaffhasgivenitagreatdealofthought!OurChampionsDinnercelebratestheministryofFCAandourstudents,butitjustfeltlikeweshoulddomore.Whyisthat?Maybe,wefeelthiswaybecausethisgenera:onofstudentswerealreadyfacingmentalhealthproblems,andnowapandemichaspiledonanxietytoanewhighlevel.Dr.TimElmoresaid,“Thisgenera+on(17-24)feelsdelayedbyCOVID-19,andit’saddedtotheiranxietylevels…manyofthesekidsfeel:postponed,pushedaside,penalized,andpanicked.”
Wecan’tgivethemapromorspringmusical,northechancetosetrecordsorcompeteinaspringsport.Wecan’tgivethemthehonorofsiNngwiththeirclassmatesbeforewalkingacrossastageandshakingthehandofateacherandgrabbingtheirdiplomawiththeother.Wecan’t.Ijustusedtheword,“Can’t!”Ibrokemyowncoachingrule.Iusedtotellmyathletesthat,“Can’t”isafour-leQerword,andwewillnotuseitwhenpreparingforvictory.So,whatCANwedoforourseniorsandthestudentscomingbehindthem?
WeCANacknowledge,notcomparetheirdisappointmentandloss.Theyhavelostpartoftheirgrowingupexperience.Beforeyoutellthem,“itcouldbeworse”orthat“it’snotabigdeal,”putyourselfintheirshoes.Showsomeempathy.
WeCANcreateanalterna:vecelebra:on.Inmyhouse,whenoursonsturn17,wehavea“Blessing”ceremony.Wegatherfamilyandmentors,andoursonispresentedwithaspecialmeal,wordsofencouragementandasword!It’slikeariteofpassage,somethingourculturerarelydoesanymore.
WeCANdosomethingforsomeoneelse.Insteadoffocusingonourselves,wecanfocusonothers.HelpingorservingothersinneedwillalwaysmakeusfeelbeQer.Whocanyouhelpinyourcommunity?

Campisback!ThankstothediligenteffortsandcarefulplanningofboththeNa:onalFCAOfficeandMichindohRetreatCenter,FCACAMPISHAPPENING!Itwon’tbethesame,butitwills:llbeGREAT!Weareexcitedtoannouncea“FCALeadershipDayCamp”.
