Dear Parents
The winter sunshine slants through the windows and school is finally quiet as the
entire school settles down to write their June examinations. After a frenetic few
weeks on the cultural and sporting fronts, this is a welcome reprieve. All the girls
have been issued with examination booklets which outline what they need to study
for each subject, as well as examination rules. We urge them to study hard and do
their very best.
Our school choir performs at the St Dunstan’s Choir Festival tonight and we thank
Mrs Penny for the many hours preparing the girls and know that they will not disap-
point. Likewise, our best wishes go with the first Hockey, Netball, Tennis and Squash
teams who are participating in the ISSF Tournament this weekend.
The second leg of the Drummies Provincials was hosted at St Dominic’s last weekend.
The Senior Squad marched with confidence, poise and precision. They finished first
overall and this puts them in a strong position for the National Competition to be
held in July.
Our World Scholars Cup teams performed exceptionally well achieving 3rd and 7th
places respectively. They qualify to participate in the next round to be held in Prague.
We are very proud of their achievements and the teachers who guided them in their
research.
On a sad note, we say good bye to Mrs Yvonne Whyte who has served St Dominic’s as
debating coach for many years. Our debating teams have thrived under her guidance.
Her passion, dedication and love will be sorely missed. We wish her well in her retire-
ment.
Kind Regards
Mrs Sharon Fitzgerald
Blanket Mass
2 One School, One Family, One Spirit
Our Blanket Mass was celebrat-ed by Fr Mark James in the Jubilee Centre on Thursday 26 May. This Mass has in the past coincided with Ascension Thursday, but from this year, this feast will be celebrated on the following Sunday. Fr Mark gave a thought-provoking ser-mon and the girls’ singing and marimba-playing added beauty and reverence to the service. Our theme this year was “Collecting, having and keeping just what we need, and not more” and our whole school united around this by donating a large number blankets (many of them handmade), baby items and groceries to those who are in need. Thank you to all the girls and their families who contributed blankets, baby products, clothes, and food for those in need. At the recent Grade 11 Mass at the Cathedral, Bishop Duncan made the point that every little thing that we do for others makes it a happy day. The numerous blankets on dis-play during the Mass was a demonstration of how much the St Dominic’s Family cares about others. All the contribu-tions have been handed over to the following organisations: St Vincent de Paul St Francis Care Centre New Beginnings TLC Almond Tree SPCA Sr Leo Sr Margaret

Our annual PTP Fun Day was held on Friday 17 May 2016. All our girls were dressed in different “Celebration” themes. Well done to all our girls and homeroom teachers contributing to the spirit of the day. We started the day by singing “Happy Birthday” to our gor-geous Pre School girls in their pink birthday shirts and tu-tus. We are celebrating their 25th birthday this year. St Dominic’s Drummies enter-tained us with their displays and then the day STARTED. The go-karts were the highlight of the day. Every girl’s fitness was tested. Active Education put in a lot of effort which allowed our girls to enjoy this special day. Thank you to Mr van Dyk and his team for all the different activities. Our PTP mums packed special lunches for the girls. You are a very special team!! Thank you to all our parents for the contribution towards this PTP Fund Raiser. Mev Van Zyl Deputy Principal

Careers Expo
5
On the 18th of May St Dominic's,
hosted our annual careers expo.
We were delighted to have over
40 institutions displaying wonder-
ful opportunities that could be
considered once school is over.
The Jubilee was abuzz with excite-
ment as learners and parents
were able to get questions an-
swered about requirements need-
ed to attend these institutions
and all the possibilities that are
available as career choices. We
also had phenomenal speakers in
the hall who were providing valu-
able insight into their chosen ca-
reers and the paths that lead
them to where they are today.
Some of these speakers included
a Chartered Accountant, an Attor-
ney and a Paediatrician.

Shakespeare's Coriolanus
7
On the 2nd of June 2016 the St Dominic's matrics- together
with the matrics of St Dunstan's, St Catherine's and Shangri
La gathered at the St Dominic's school Hall to share in a
common quest for enlightenment on the most political play
Shakespeare ever wrote: Coriolanus.
The play was brought to life and sense by a passionate cast
of actors who inspired understanding and enjoyment de-
spite the difficulty of the Elizabethan English.
The production was brought to a conclusion with an inten-
sive question and answer session which shed light on the
complexities of the play and its characters- the answers and
speculation of which will aid in many essays to come.
A huge thank you to Mrs Fanucchi and the English Depart-
ment for giving substance to the statement: "plays are
meant to be watched not read".
This was a production put on by The National Children’s
Theatre
Paballo Mosikidi
On behalf of the Saints and Saintees, their coaches and committee, we would
like to thank all those who came to support at our provincial competition. It
takes courage to compete in competitions and go out in front of so many peo-
ple, but with such positive support it makes it that much easier. THANK YOU!
To all the school girls who helped on the day, a big thank you. Thanks also to
Nadine Evans who is not a drummies mom but helped in the clubhouse and
also assisted at our music tent.
Ms Venter
Pit Production On Monday 30 May the grade 11+12 learners had
the opportunity to watch PIT Production’s perfor-
mance of their literature.
The actors made the
literature come alive
which contributed a lot
to the learners’ under-
standing of the content.
It was 90 minutes load-
ed with information and
fun.

Grade 11 Mass at Cathedral of Christ the King
The Prayer that St Dominic’s girls attached to the Door of Mercy:
Dear Lord, Help us to live our lives according to your laws.
Grant us the strength to be loyal to your teachings.
Fill our hearts with the desire to spread your word.
We praise you, O Lord, for blessing us with your
everlasting mercy. May your love guide us in all that
we do. Amen.
(Prayer inspired by Psalm 119)
On Thursday 19 May the Gr 11 class attend the annual Gr 11
Mass in Johannesburg. Catholic Schools from Johannesburg
meet at the Cathedral once a year to offer a Mass for the inten-
tions of the prospective student leaders in Catholic Schools. The
theme for this year was The Year of Mercy becoming a People
of Mercy. In March St Dominic’s received the pilgrimage cross
from Veritas College and in turn handed the cross over to St
Catherine’s School in Germiston. This cross was brought to the
Cathedral by Dominican Convent, Belgravia.
The Grade 11s said of the experience that:
“The light that shone through the stained glass windows
made us sit up and appreciate God.” “We thoroughly en-
joyed the Grade 11 Mass. It was a beautiful ceremony. ”
“We got a better understanding of what is expected of us
in the Year of Mercy. We were reminded to always give to
the less fortunate.” “Bishop Duncan opened our eyes with
his words.” “The Sermon at Mass was very true and some-
thing that teenagers all over the world can relate to. We
are not perfect people but we can make other people hap-
py and change the day for them.”
“After Mass all the Grade 11s were able to mingle with each other, then sing and dance in praise of the Lord.” “Seeing all
our friends from other schools was thrilling.”
