UC Personal Insight Questions
● You will have 8 questions to choose from. You must respond to only 4 of the 8 questions.
● Responses are limited to a maximum of 350 words (approx. ½ page, single spaced)
● You should select questions that are most relevant to your experience and that best reflect your individual circumstances.
● There is no right or wrong way to answer these questions: It’s about getting to know your personality, background, interests and achievements in your own unique voice.
UC Personal Insight Questions
1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped
resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and
innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent
over time?
4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome
an educational barrier you have faced.
5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this

7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
8. What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from other candidates applying to the University of
California?
UC Personal Insight Questions
notes: **not all common app colleges require an essay** *650 word limit**
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Application Process con’t.
Common App
Common App Website: http://www.commonapp.org/
Select your school counselor when filling out your application. Your counselor will submit a ‘counselor report’ which includes a copy of your transcript.
APPLICATION OPENS OCT. 1st
CSU Apply: https://www2.calstate.edu/apply
https://admissions.universityofcalifornia.edu/applicant/login.htm
UC Application: Opened August 1st
Grades 9-11th
Only enter college-prep courses- most of these are noted with a (p)
■ Does not include: Health, FIT, PE, Intro math classes, non-college prep electives
■ GHS a-g course list can be found in course catalog (on school website) or on the UC Doorways Website
Most core courses have two grades ■ CSU: “Fall/Spring”
● if your class is only 1 trimester, enter “NG” in the other column
■ UC: “Grade 1/Grade 2”● if your class is only 1 trimester, select ‘NO’ in the other column
How to Enter Courses: The Basics
UC Application
CSU Application
CSU Application: A-G Matching
Check to make sure all the A-G subjects are fulfilled and match the number of courses you’ve entered into your academic history section.
IF you are missing a record of something, go to “Update A-G Courses” and manually adjust how classes are categorized.
CSU Application: A-G Matching Manual Adjustments
Enter/adjust the correct corresponding A-G subject for each class
12th Grade• Use terms ‘In progress’ or ‘IP’ for courses currently taking
‘Planned’ or “PL’ for T2 and T3 classes
UC Application
CSU Application
All 12th grade courses on the UC application will auto-fill with “IP” and “PL” so make sure to change if needed
Entering 12th Grade Courses
Select “In Progress” and/or “Planned” from drop-down grade menu in CSU. “NG” for second grade of one-tri courses.
7th-8th Grade: Foreign language (Spanish, French) and Math (Algebra 1, Geom, Algebra 2) taken in middle school can fulfill A-G requirements if grades of “C-” or higher were earned
UC Application: Report courses taken as 7th and 8th grade classes, no grades
CSU application: Report math and foreign languages taken in middle school in “7th/8th Grade” section. Input grades earned.
Entering Middle School Grades
How to enter a three trimester class taken in 1 year:
Ex. AP Calc BC, IB SL Courses, and IB HOA 2
Enter Granada High School twice in your ‘high schools attended’ section. One GHS will be a semester system, one GHS will be a trimester system. Use the GHS trimester system for courses that give three grades throughout a single year.
CSU
UC: How to enter a three trimester class taken in 1 year
When entering your high school, select both a semester and trimester term system.
THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ALL THREE TRIMESTER MATH! The “Intro” portion of 3-trimester math courses and Math AP Seminars are not college prep and therefore are not submitted with the application (so do them as semester classes= Geometry A/B). The only math class with 3 grades is AP Calc BC A/B/C.
CSU Applications
UC Applicationschoose ‘trimester or semester’ for each class
Entering courses from other high schools or other programs (Ex: BYU, Livermore High School)
• Enter the actual school/program as a separate additional school – not under GHS.
• find CEEB code on Doorways (this code populates the course offerings from that school) https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution
courses from Las Positas or other Community colleges are entered as classes from a college
Entering Courses: schools other than GHS
If you are using Las Positas (or other college level) classes to meet your minimum A-G eligibility, you must enter that course as if it was a Granada class.
Example: foreign language taken at Las Positas to meet minimum eligibility should be entered as a high school class
● Courses taken beyond minimum eligibility should still be entered in as Las Positas College courses
● This RARELY applies, please see your counselor for individual help
Exception to previous rule: CSU Only
● Calculating your UC/CSU GPA○ all a-g courses from 10th-11th grade recalculated on
the 4 point scale● A= 4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0● add up all points for classes, divide by number of semester long courses
taken
○ add 1 point for each trimester of an AP, most IB HL*, and some IB SL* (up to 8) with grades of “C-” or higher
*see course catalogue pg. 60, UC Doorways, or your counselor for exact list
UC/CSU GPA is different than the GHS transcript GPA
A = 5 (4) = 20B = 12 (3) = 36C = 6 (2) = 12
AP bump = 2------------------------------=70
GPA = 70/23 (number of classes taken)
= 3.04
only use grades from 10th and 11th grade to calculate UC/CSU GPA
