Senator
Turner
Appointed
to BallotBoard
Hopes to bring
equity to ballot
language
ColumbusIn January, Senate Democratic Leader Eric Kearney (D-Cincinnati) an-
nounced the appointment of Senator Nina Tuner (D-Cleveland) to the Ohio Ballot Board
for a four-year term beginning February 5, 2013.
Senator Turner has a passion for fairness and increasing participation in our elections
that will be an asset for the Ballot Board, said Senator Kearney. She will be a strong
voice for our Caucus in representing the rights of Ohio voters.
The Ohio Ballot Board prescribes and certifies the ballot language for proposed Consti-
tutional amendments, initiatives, and referenda. It also overseas efforts to inform vot-ers of proposed ballot issues. The Secretary of State chairs the five-member board.
ColumbusLawmakers from across Ohio were sworn in on Janu-
ary 7 at the Statehouse as the 130th General Assembly
officially commenced. Senator Turner took the oath of office to
represent the reconfigured 25th District, which now includes
portions of both Lake and Cuyahoga Counties.
I look forward to serving alongside so many dedicated public
servants over the next two years, Senator Turner said. We will
be facing some truly momentous issuesfrom the budget and
elections reform to economic development, education, and en-
suring that Ohioans have access to a lifetime of opportunities.
I am honored to do this important work for my constituents.
The first part of the new legislative session will undoubtedly be
focused on the two-year state budget, but Turner hopes to
continue some of the work that was begun last year. School
funding reform will also play a key role this spring, and SenatorTurners position on the Finance Subcommittee on Education will
allow her to play an important part in the discussion.

Cleveland State University has had a busy year ex-panding its international reach, and now it has theaccolades to prove it.
CSU produced the second highest number of Ful-bright scholars in the nation during the 2012-2013academic year. The second-place ranking wasshared among eight universities, with each produc-ing five Fulbright scholars. Tying for runner-up thisyear with CSU were Arizona State University, Universi-ty of Arizona, Rutgers, Texas A&M at College Station,University of Florida, University of Minnesota-TwinCities and University of Washington at Seattle.
CSU's Fulbright grant winners are staff membersJayne Mary Fuglister, Rama K. Jayanti, Brian EdwardRay, Janche Sang and Miena Sterio.
"This is an important distinction," says Joe Mosbrook,CSU's director of strategic communication. "CSU hasan outstanding faculty that's been doing someremarkable things."
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH)has launched an ambitious $125 million cam-paign to renovate and expand its campus in Universi-ty Circle. Dr. Evalyn Gates, the particle physicist whohas led the museum since 2010, wants the newstructure to become a hands-on learning lab forgreen building, science education and environmen-tal stewardship.
"Our role is to give kids a taste of real science withreal scientists in a hands-on, minds-on kind of way,"says Gates. "We can do things in a museum thatcan't be done in every classroom. Natural history isabout our understanding of the world around us.
CMNH will demolish a portion of its older, 1950s-style building and renovate the rest of it. The muse-um also will add two light-filled wings, a glassy lobby,
and 300-space parking garage. The re-do will bringactivity that now takes place in the bowels of thebuilding -- such as paleontology work -- into a morepublicly accessible space where people can moreeasily see it.

Washington, D.C.In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmeda womans right to privacy in seeking an abortion. The deci-
sion, Roe v. Wade, was a landmark case that has resonatedloudly throughout the American legal system ever since.
Throughout the past four decades, the battle of femalereproductive health has shifted to state legislatures. Abortionfoes have used creative tactics to decrease the availability ofthe procedure. For example, the Mississippi state legislaturehas passed new regulations on abortion clinics that requirephysicians to obtain admitting privileges at a local hospital. The process has proven nearly impossible, jeopardizing thelast remaining clinic in that state.
Cumbersome state regulations that could potentially end theavailability of abortion were declared legal in the 1992 case,
Casey v. Planned Parenthood. This ruling energized the pro-life movement to use state level regulations to effectivelydefund and over-regulate clinics to the point of closure.
