General Information
Brief History of the Facultyof Health Sciences
The Faculty of Health Sciences was founded in
1975 with the aim of training highly accomplished,
skilled, committed and open minded professionals
for Hungarian health care. This was the first
school in Hungary that trained dietitians, health
visitors, physiotherapists, public health and epide-
miology inspectors, vocational teachers and ambu-
lance officers.
During the past years both the structure and
the curriculum have undergone changes in the
spirit of modernization. As a result, there are at
present 13 departments, about 200 highly-quali-
fied lecturers and more than 3000 students.
It was an important event in the life of the Fac-
ulty that it became an integrated part of the famous
and well-known Semmelweis University in 2000.
The latest development was the introduction of
courses for international students in English. In
the 2004/2005 academic year students of Physio-
therapy could start their studies in English. In
2011 the English language Nursing and Midwifery
B.Sc. programs were launched. From 2012 Nursing
M.Sc. program is planned to be launched.
Facts and Figures
The Faculty of Health Sciences celebrated its 30th
anniversary in 2005. During the past years 15
programs have been established. In the past 35
years more than 20,000 students graduated from
the Faculty. Today about 3000 students are study-
ing at this institution. The Faculty is very proud of
its Library with more than 50,000 volumes.
During the last three decades the Faculty has
developed extensive international relations, and as
a result we have connections and cooperation with
about 100 higher educational institutions through-
out Europe, Asia and America. In the last six years
more than one hundred students and dozens of
staff members took part in long-term exchanges in
the framework of the Socrates/Erasmus program.
In the last couple of years we built up excellent
relations with Nazareth College of Rochester
(NAZ), USA, and as a result more than 100 stu-
dents and staff members took part in a four-week
summer training at NAZ in the last six years. More-
over, this relationship developed into the world’s
first EU–US dual degree training in B.Sc. Nursing in
2007, in the frame of which both European and
American student and teacher exchanges take
place. The Faculty’s Asian relations have also been
largely extended by establishing a fruitful relation-
ship with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of
Medicine (SJTU) and Heilongjiang University of
Chinese Medicine (HLJUCM) in China, and Nguyen
Tat Thanh College (NTT) in Vietnam. Consequent-
ly, HLJUCM launched their B.Sc. Traditional Chi-
nese Medicine training at our Faculty in 2010, and
we are preparing cooperation with NTT about
establishing our B.Sc. Nursing training in the near
future. We are also proud of having operated our
B.Sc. Physiotherapy training in Lugano, Switzer-
land for more than three years now.
International and HungarianAccreditation
From 2004 – with Hungary becoming a member
state of the EU – all diplomas of the Faculty are ac-
cepted by any member states of the EU with sup-
plementary exams if needed, and what is more,
our graduates can also work in the United States
and Canada after they have acquired sufficient
proficiency of English and passed supplementary
exams if needed.

Campus
The Faculty of Health Sciences has several build-
ings in Budapest. The newly reconstructed main
building is situated in the heart of the Hungarian
capital. Work on the building was completed at
the beginning of 2004, and in January all the edu-
cational and organizational units, which had been
scattered in different places before, moved to one
common building in the inner city area.
The former headquarters of the Faculty became
the center for adult and postgraduate training.
The Faculty has two Residence Halls with a
total capacity of about 200 students:
• id. János Bókay Residence Hall
Address: H-1046 Budapest, 26 Erkel Gyula str.
Phone: +36 1 369-1741
• Gábor Kátay Residence Hall
Address: H-1131 Budapest, 44 Hajdú str.
Phone: +36 1 349-7115
The Residence Halls are operated by the Resi-

and best appliances of computer technology.
Students can get information about all education-
al issues via the Internet and other computer

Information about the B.Sc., M.Sc.
and Ph.D. Programs
Hungary, as a member of the European Union,
belongs to the unified European Higher Education
Area, which in principal follows the British and
American three-cycle (bachelor, master and doc-
torate) training system.
In order to meet the objectives set out in the
Bologna Declaration, Semmelweis University Faculty
of Health Sciences has restructured its training sys-
tem. Programs leading to a Bachelor’s Degree are
based on a one-year core curriculum, followed by
three years of study in specialist programs (major).
B.Sc. programs require the completion of 180 to
240 ECTS credits and can only be launched if there
is a subsequent Master’s program. There is a pos-
sibility for students to proceed to graduate pro-
grams in inter- or intra-institutional forms.
M.Sc. programs require the completion of 90 to
120 ECTS credits.
6
The qualifications are comparable and re-
cognised all around Europe. In this system it is
much easier for students, lecturers and research-
ers to travel and build international relations,
moreover, as citizens of the European Union they
can continue their studies and plan their future
as employees or entrepreneurs in each member
state.
The training experience of 30 years and the
valuable assets of the Faculty of Health Sciences
have been incorporated in the new system. Quali-
fications are defined in terms of learning outcomes
and not the length of years.

Academic Policies
Academic Policies
Students are required to know and act according
to the Faculty’s Studies and Examinations Regu-lations. Attendance in classes and practical exer-
cises are prescribed in the actual Subject Descrip-
tions.
Students are expected to take examinations
when scheduled, otherwise they lose their chan-
ces. The credit-system allows a certain degree of
flexibility in signing up for courses and in the tim-
ing of exams.
This is conform to international standards and
helps an easier setting-in of students with differ-
ent educational backgrounds.
Students get more information about study
matters at the Registration and in the course of
“Introduction to Higher Education Studies”.
Basics of the Credit-based System
A new credit system was introduced in Septem-
ber, 2003 to subserve free workflow in the EU, and
to promote easy career adjustment in the frame-
work of lifelong learning.
1. A credit point is a unit of measure of average
total student coursework workload needed to
complete a subject. A credit is earned if the
student receives at least a pass mark (or a
“satisfactory” mark) for a course. The value of
the credit earned is independent of the mark
received for the course. No credit will be
earned, if any of the policies are violated.
2. One credit is earned for every thirty hours of
the student’s academic work. This academic
work includes the time spent in class and the
time spent on individual work by the student.
3. Credits can be earned for courses that con-
clude with examinations.
For Accreditation ProcessIn case the applicant would like to handle a
Credit Transfer Request to have the earlier
studies (credit points) admitted it is necessary
to present the following documents:
– official Subject Descriptions
– official transcript: including all the grades
and credits from the previous college/uni-
versity studies
– official certification about the field practices
– marking scale in order to evaluate/compare
academic records accurately
– transfer request written by the applicant
– student status certificate: only in case the
applicant still studies at a college/university
(not older than 30 days)
Credit Transfer Requests are assessed by the
Credit Transfer Committee.
Transfer of a subject(s) is only possible if
the content of the substitute and substituted
subjects are overlapping.
4. Registering for and completing a further sub-
ject with point value equivalent to 10 percent
of the total credit specified in the qualification
requirements of the given programme is free of
charge for students participating in the tuition
fee paying training system, however, they
must pay a fee proportion to the credit points.
5. At the end of the four years of study, students
have to write a thesis and pass a final exam.
These are prerequisites of a diploma.
