Seminar empowers

AUGUST saw three fun, inspiring,
empowering and educational
days for staff and students at the
Palmerston Girls Academy as
they hosted the 2013 Nestle
Deadly Chicks Mentoring
Seminar at Northline Oval in
Durack.
The three day-seminar drew in
90 indigenous girls in Years 7-12
from Role Models and Leaders
Girls Academies in Palmerston,
Alice Springs, Jabiru and
Gunbalanya.
The seminar was organised by
staff at the Palmerston Girls
Academy to help the girls learn
life skills that will see positive
changes and developments in
their futures. This was done
through workshops and
motivational speakers.
The girls were visited by a
number of influential speakers,
including Palmerston mayor Ian
Abbot, CEO of the Heart
Foundation Darwin Dot Morrison,
entertainer Ally Mills and
sportswoman Bo de la Cruz.
They benefited from inspiring
speeches that aimed to motivate
the girls to overcome stereotypes
and challenges.
Everyone had a ball as they
rotated through eight educational
workshops concerning resume
writing and interview skills, VET
and university entry, nutrition,
sexual health, financial literacy,
communication, hair and beauty
and goal setting.
The workshops and speeches
showed the girls what they have
to be proud of in their cultures
and in themselves, which is such
an important facet of their
developing identities.
Other activities including
football matches, a talent quest,
team building activities and a
fashion parade, were also held to
foster self-confidence.
The event was a great success
thanks to the hard work of the
Palmerston Girls Academy staff,
the financial support of sponsors
such as Inpex, Amart Sports,
Officeworks, the Department of
Health, the Office of Youth Affairs
and the City of Palmerston, and
of course the participation of the
West Arnhem Girls Academies
and the Centralian Girls
Academies.
The event was well received by
the community and had immense
support.
ForumtacklesdrinkingTHE Ychange? project and the
Australian Youth Forum held a
forum and on alcohol and binge
drinking on September 13-14, at
the Palmerston Recreation
Centre and Adina Vibe hotel.
The youth-led Ychange?
steering committee had been
planning for the two-day event for
the last nine months, and finally
pulled it off.
Day 1 of the forum was on
Friday and consisted of a variety
of workshops and interactive
presentations on subjects
including Drumbeat, graffiti,
drama and young people in the
media.
More than 170 students from
around the NT participated,
including students from
Katherine School of the Air,
Darwin and Palmerston middle
and high schools, and
scholarship recipients from
Nhulunbuy and Alice Springs.
Day two was a brunch, which
was a shorter discussion-based
session involving inspiring
speakers and entertainment.
Jacara Egan, the 2013 NT
Representative on the Australian
Youth Forum, was an engaging
speaker and musician Colin Lillie
captivated the audience with his
storytelling and musical flair.
The overall responses from
young people participating on
the day were very positive, and
many students commented that
they learnt a lot about making
responsible decisions when
drinking.
