Department of Pharmacology, Sree Vidyanikethan College of Pharmacy organized a

Seminar cum Hands-on Training Program (HOT) on “Role of Pharmacists in Patient

Safety and ADRs” for the students of B.Pharmacy, M.Pharmacy, Pharm.D, and Pharm.D

(P.B) in Smart Class Seminar Hall, SVIS, on 1st February 2020.

Dr. ANNA BALAJI, Professor & Principal of Sree Vidyanikethan College of Pharmacy,

welcomed and thanked the resource person Dr. Palanisamy Sivanandy, Senior Lecturer,

School of Pharmacy, International Medical University, Malaysia for accepting the

invitation to deliver a seminar cum Hands-on Training Program on patient safety and

ADRs. He also emphasized the importance of documentation and monitoring of adverse

drug reactions.

In the presentation, Dr. Palanisamy Sivanandy delivered the significance of health,

sustainable health, wellness and the role of the pharmacist in patient safety.The speaker

emphasized polypharmacy and falls; a global phenomenon especially in geriatric patients.

He also told the students they have a future scope in the area of caring the geriatrics

patients who are more prone falls due to polypharmacy and urged the students that

there is a need to check each prescription to find the drugs that cause falls. He also

explained how to prevent and minimize falls by deprescribing guides and safe medication.

In the afternoon session, Dr. Palanisamy Sivanandy conducted the Hands-on Training

program on “Assessment, monitoring, and documentation of Adverse Drug Reactions”.

He taught the students how to fill the different ADR forms like suspected adverse drug

reactions, MedWatch forms and how to assess the ADRs using Naranjo’s Causality

Assessment Scale with the help of different case studies.

He instructed the students to identify the ADRs, fall risk-increasing drugs, the role of

health care professionals in different situations and to report them in different ADR forms

under his supervision during the training session. He clearly pointed out & instructed the

students regarding the resources available to check ADRs, Drug-Drug interaction,

Polypharmacy interactions along with other side effects.

At the end of the session, the students interacted with the resource person by raising

their doubts and scope of Pharm.D in Malaysia and other countries. The speaker also

interacted and motivated students to update and focus on patient safety in geriatrics and

he advised the students to enhance their practical skills during their ward rounds, clinical

posting and during the patient counseling process.
