I would like to thank the many
clients who called and sent me
cards, emails and letters to
congratulate me on my 45th
anniversary in the business. I
was very touched by your
thoughtfulness. It has been my
honour and pleasure to know
you and work with you for these
many years.
Summer,
2014
1943– If you were born in 1943, you
need to make changes to your retirement savings plan before the end of this year
(2014). We can help!!
45th Anniversary
THANK YOU!
Rick and Kevin had a great time attending the annual Million Dollar Round Table meeting in Toronto last week. There were 9,000 members in attendance from all around the
world. They spent 4 days listening to motivational speakers and some brilliant leaders from within our industry. There were some wonderful “take-aways” and they learned new information that they can pass along to our clients.
Our most heartfelt wishes go to Robyn and Gabe on their destination wedding in Jamaica on May 1st. We wish you a long, happy, healthy and prosperous life together!!
SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT FEATURING OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER: LAURIE MARTIN
We are very excited to introduce our guest speaker, Laurie Martin.
Laurie is a Certified Trauma Specialist, Elder Planning Counselor,
life strategist, crisis educator and responder, author and professional
speaker, who educates and empowers others through customized
talks, training and coaching. She teaches people to be comfortable and extraordinary
when faced with the most uncomfortable and extraordinary situations. She has thousands
of hours of hands-on, front-line intervention experience following such crises as the Ice
Storm, Oklahoma City bombing and September 11th attacks.
This fall, we will be hosting a seminar and we were lucky to be able to book Laurie as
our guest speaker. The goal of the seminar is to present some unique perspectives on
how adult children can help their parents deal with all of life’s changes, with the focus
being on the ‘human element’ of managing change, crisis, stress, etc.
We will be sending out the invitations during the latter part of the summer. If you
are at this stage of your life or have aging parents, you won’t want to miss this event.

Testimonials Brent and Michele W.
“Kevin has been there for us each time we
needed a review and advice on our investments
and overall portfolio. I have known Kevin for
over 17 years and I would recommend him to
manage others’ investment portfolios”. - Brent
“Kevin is on top of my investment portfolio. He
gives timely advice and allows me to schedule
family’s portfolio reviews when I see fit. I
would recommend him to manage any of my
family or friends’ investments.” - Michele
“Markets crash all the time. You should, at minimum,
expect stocks to fall at least 10% once a year, 20% once
every few years, 30% or more once or twice a decade,
and 50% or more once or twice during your lifetime.
Those who don’t understand this will eventually learn it
the hard way.” —Morgan Housel (from Barry Ritholtz)
As most stock markets worldwide reach new heights on
what seems to be a daily basis, I can’t help but worry
about when the next correction might be. There seems to
be a fair number of ‘experts’ out there calling for a
correction, but my personal feeling is that things are still
looking good and traditionally after a market correction
(2008 for example) the markets rise to new levels and the
deeper the correction the better the recovery. Equity
investors with at least a 10-year time horizon should get
invested and not be waiting for the ‘right time’ to get into
the markets. Since 1970, there have only been four
“granddaddy” bear markets (negative) - 1973, 1987,
2000 and 2008—following each of these significant
“crashes” the major stock markets advanced to new
highs. Interestingly, our Canadian market is currently
trading at its highest level since 2008. The best thing
to do is be proactive, review your investments regularly
and make sure you are well diversified among high
quality funds with a focus on dividends. We are always
managing our clients’ investments with the primary
focus on increasing investment returns, but an equally
important component to the management process is
looking at ways to protect your money during a down-
turn. As we head into the summer months, some of you
may be lucky enough to be heading to the family cottage.
I have been speaking with a lot of clients about cottages
and the processes and concepts around passing them on to
the next generation. Soaring property values and related
taxes have made it a lot more complex than it used to be,
but with careful planning, we can ensure that it will be
enjoyed for generations to come. One of the hardest
questions our clients need to ask themselves is, “Do the
children want the cottage?” In most situations the
children feel awkward broaching the subject, which is
why the parents are usually left taking the initiative.
Often parents deal with the cottage in their will without
having had a discussion with their kids, and the kids
don’t bring up the subject for fear of upsetting their
parents by divulging lack of interest. Succession
planning is a critical part of your estate plan and there
are a number of unique legal requirements for you to
consider.
There are many options to discuss around this life event
and the main message I would like to deliver to those
of you affected by this, is to put your emotions aside
and have a frank conversation with your children and
determine the most sensible course of action.
Enjoy the summer—I hope it brings us lots of warm,
sunny weather and wonderful memories for us all!
Kindest Regards, Kevin

An old battered banjo has a new
home at the Canadian War Museum
in Ottawa. The banjo was signed
by 28 members of the Canadian
Expeditionary Force in France in
August 1917. It was discovered in
England and donated to the museum by Alec
Sommerville. After deciphering the signatures on
the banjo, Sommerville set out to find out what he
could about the 28 soldiers. He learned that these
men represented almost every province in Canada
and included the uncle of former Governor
General Roland Michener.
Many people enjoy a gin and tonic on a hot summer’s day, however tonic water was originally used as a potent remedy to malaria, which was rampant during the building of the Rideau Canal. Tonic water contains a very bitter compound called quinine. In folk
remedies of the 1700’s, quinine was mixed with sugar and water to mask its bitterness and from that, tonic water as we know it was born. A century later, this miracle potion was used to treat symptoms of malaria along the Rideau Canal. However, when tonic water met gin, it was used for more than just soothing symptoms of malaria. Let’s give a salute to tonic!

Reviewing your Mortgage Our financial advisors have often been asked for mortgage assistance by our clients. The mortgage business can be a confusing one to navigate and our main reason for expanding into the industry was to add another level of service so our clients could take control of their financial well being. We work hard to provide superior customer service, so when we had to select a mortgage broker, Dominion Lending Centres (DLC) was our top pick . DLC is the largest mortgage brokerage in Canada and their volume far outnumbers all the mortgages sold by all of Canada’s big banks annually. With access to over 35 lenders (banks included), it allows us to put in place the right mortgage based on our clients’ needs, not the banks’. By reviewing your mortgage annually, you ensure you’re getting the best rate possible. It can also act as a credit check, making sure your credit is in good standing. This past year we have reviewed over 60 mortgages, and are proud that we replaced the mortgages of 28 clients. These clients now have a mortgage that makes more financial sense for them. Last month we performed a mortgage review for some great clients that had 4 years remaining in their term, plus some other debts that they wondered about combining. There was a $4,000 penalty to break their mortgage, so we had to be sure it was the right option. After running all the numbers and finding the right lender, we were able to save them approximately $900 a month by refinancing and combining their debt—and that was after the penalty! Now that their monthly payments have dropped substantially, they can start the savings program they have wanted for retirement planning, and they have more disposable income to enjoy. Over the next four years they will realize a savings of over 43K. Don’t let the possibility of a penalty discourage you from exploring your options! The penalties are “paid” by the new mortgage, so you are not out of pocket for the penalty amount. If you would like to review your mortgage, please let me know and I’d be happy to review it with you. We work as a team and are available to help you. All we will need from you in order to complete the review, is the following: 1. Your last annual mortgage statement—this
tells us all the rate/balance information required to assess.
2. The amount of your current penalty (you can find this out by a quick call to your lender).

Panama Canal More than one million ships have passed through the Panama Canal since it opened on August 15, 1914. An astonishing feat of engineering, construction
started in 1880, and it took tens of thousands of workers to carve the 80-km route. The initial cost of the canal was $366,650,000. A century later, the canal is still the ultimate shortcut for ships transporting goods between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
AMAZING FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE SUN
▪ Del Sol means “The Sun” in Spanish.
▪ Some day the sun will wear out! This is
because it must use its own mass to make
energy. The good news is the sun has enough
mass to keep it burning for millions of years.
▪ There are as many stars, such as the SUN, as
there are grains of sand in all the beaches
of the world!
▪ As much as 80% of the SUN’s UV rays can
still reach the earth on a cloudy day.
▪ In order to fry an egg on the sidewalk,
the SUN must heat it to over 144 degrees
Fahrenheit.
▪ The SUN is 1 million times larger than earth.

wine and fine weather and a
little music. — John Keats

PROTECTING YOUR NEST EGG
-AFTER YOU’RE GONE You’ve worked hard over the
years to ensure your loved ones
will be comfortable both now
and after you’re gone.
However, your nest egg can
disappear very quickly when it
is passed on to your beneficiaries. This “sudden
wealth” approach to transfer your hard earned
savings is a real concern for many people. For those who prefer to transfer an inheritance
gradually over time, the most common approach
has been to establish a trust—either inside
or outside the will. Trusts can be a very
effective wealth transfer vehicle, but there are
some drawbacks that should be carefully
weighed, such as cost, complexity and on-going
management. Fortunately, there is now an appealing alternate
wealth transfer option which has considerable
merit, due to its simplicity and flexibility. An Annuity Settlement Option can
automatically transfer the proceeds of your
investment account upon death, into an annuity. The resulting annuity will then make gradual
income payments to your beneficiaries. Below
is a list of the benefits of this option:
Allows you to control the manner in
which your assets are allocated to your
beneficiaries.
Eliminates the need and cost associated
with setting up a formal trust.
Provides an increased level of privacy while
avoiding costly probate and estate fees.
Ensures younger beneficiaries, such as
children and grandchildren, receive a
controlled income stream.
Provides parents of children with a
disability a comprehensive estate planning
tool.
Allows you to make changes to your
beneficiaries and settlement options
quickly and without cost.
If you would like more information
about Annuity Settlement Options, please
call our office.
