Using case examples to illustrate the challenges when a family history of cancer is present, this session provides practical

underwriting tips and insights into interpreting genetic testing results, including those negatives and variants of unknown

significance. Focusing on hereditary breast (BRCA 1/2) and ovarian cancers, as well as Lynch syndrome, with respect to Life and

Living Benefit products, Dr. Oman-Ganes further explores the relevance of family history, clinical clues, and situations where the

diagnosis is uncertain and genetic testing results are not available.

Colin will focus his presentation on the risks of foreign travel, taking a pragmatic approach as to how we see these very subjective risks. He will also discuss the challenges and risks of underwriting recent residents to Canada.

Living Benefits underwriters, like advisors who sell our products, must be brave, engaged and informed. We need to understand the

sources of our claims, so we can understand the risks which must be mitigated.

11:15 – 12 Noon Dr. Monica Wilson, Swiss Re St. Andrew’s Hall Applicants with Big Hearts: Are They Preferred?

Underwriters frequently see applicants who have LVH suggested to be secondary to athletic activity. In this session, Dr. Wilson will review how we can differentiate between a true athletic heart … and left ventricular hypertrophy secondary to pathologic causes.

We are all aware of the growing obesity epidemic in North America, but an increasing number of studies have focused on the long-

term impacts of childhood obesity. Research indicates that the mortality and health implications of youth obesity may be more

significant than the symptoms associated in adulthood. This session presents data from multiple studies, to highlight the premature

sickening of a typically healthy demographic, and addresses the potential implications facing insurers as this group enters the buying

population.

2:45 – 3:30 PM Dr. James Kim, RGA St. Andrew’s Hall Chronic Pain 101: Societal Impact and Treatment Overview

Dr. Kim’s presentation focuses on the burden of chronic pain, relating it to societal and economic impacts. Basic concepts around

pain and treatments, as well as underlying definitions will also be explored.

LORI BOYCE, CHS

Lori is a graduate of Queen’s University, holding degrees in History and Education.

Her professional career began in 1981 at Crown Life as a Disability Underwriter Trainee. In

the past 36 years, Lori has held a variety of executive positions at Aetna, Maritime, and

Manulife, and has always had some degree of responsibility for Living Benefits

underwriting.

Currently she is Director, Underwriting Risk Management, Retail Markets and reports to Karen Cutler, Manulife’s Chief

Underwriter. Lori’s focus is finding creative solutions for DI, CI, Synergy and LTC underwriting challenges and providing

Living Benefits underwriting input into product development, training and support.

JOANNE BRADLEY, MBA, BScEd (Hons)

Joanne Bradley champions the development and execution of key strategic initiatives for Canadian Life Branch of

Hannover Re, as well as the advancement of its profile in the industry through client relations, marketing,

communications and administration.

Joanne joined Hannover Re in May of 2015 as Vice President, Client Liaison. With close to 20 years of industry

experience, Joanne has made significant contributions in the areas of risk management, customer service, leadership

and strategy. She was previously Assistant Vice President of New Business, Customer Experience at Manulife where she

was responsible for revitalizing the new business experience for the end customer.

Joanne holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business, York University, and a Bachelor

of Science (Honours) and Education from Queen’s University.

OLIVIER COURTEAUX, PhD

Olivier began his underwriting career in 1996 at Aetna Canada. Over the past 20 years, he has

gained expertise in Life, DI, Health and CI underwriting, while working for a variety of insurance

providers, including Maritime Life, Canada Life and Manulife. In 2008, he joined Canada Protection

Plan, and for the following 7 years, he helped develop simplified issue life products, while

managing CPP’s underwriting department. In 2015, he accepted an opportunity in reinsurance. He

is currently AVP, Risk Selection at Optimum Reassurance Inc. in Montréal.

Olivier holds a Doctorate in the field of 20th century international relations from the Sorbonne in Paris. Since 2002, while

expanding his underwriting career, he has taught at various universities in Ontario, including Ryerson University and the

Royal Military College in Kingston. He continues to teach and lecture on a regular basis.

Olivier is currently President of the AQT-V for the 2016-2017 term.

MARYLOU DUNN, FALU, FLMI, ALHC

Marylou Dunn is Vice President and Chief Underwriter at Munich Re. She is responsible for

Canadian and Caribbean client and underwriting risk management, which includes policies and

procedures, audits, and the ongoing development of Munich Re’s underwriting manual, EDGE.

She has more than 25 years of underwriting experience, with a special focus on large risks,

underwriting training, and product development.

Marylou has been a guest speaker at the Canadian Institute of Underwriters, The Institute of

Caribbean Home Office Underwriters, the CRC and the World CI Conference.

She is past Treasurer of the CIU and past Secretary of MTUC, now the Underwriting Association of Toronto.

COLIN KEARNEY, MBA

Colin is responsible for the direct supervision, management and motivation of the underwriting staffs

in the Canadian market in order to provide accurate and timely appraisal of all facultative reinsurance

cases, as well as implementation of country-specific underwriting practices. Colin also works directly

with clients throughout the deal process to foster strong relationships, develop innovative solutions

that meet clients' needs and achieve results within risk management objectives. He directs the

development and revision of SGLA’s Canada risk selection guidelines and other underwriting

programs and processes, including the development, implementation and documentation of

consistent underwriting practices, controls and procedures aligning with those of the SGLA

Underwriting Division.

Prior to joining SGLA in November 2014, Colin’s roles included Support and Development Manager with SCOR, Paris and

Chief Underwriter, Europe of Transamerica Reinsurance. Colin has more than 25 years of experience working in the

Reinsurance and Insurance Industries, which includes exposure to International markets and numerous presentations at

various Underwriting events and Seminars. He is a founding member of the French Underwriters Association and holds

an MBA from the Open University Business School in Milton Keynes, along with numerous Insurance certificates,

including a Diploma in Underwriting from the Chartered Institute of Insurance.

JAMES KIM, MD, MBA

Dr. Kim has been a physician for 26 years, with 18 years in private general practice. He is

currently the medical director of the CPM Centres for Pain Management in Brampton with a

focussed, referral-based practice in the treatment of chronic, non-cancer pain that approaches

pain management in a multi-disciplinary setting.

Dr. Kim is a medical consultant to RGA Reinsurance for life insurance underwriting. He is

credentialed with the American and Canadian Academies of Pain Management and the

Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and received his MBA from the Rotman School of

Management. He has been a consultant to WSIB for disability case management and also sits on

two regional ethics boards for clinical trial reviews – the Humber River Regional Hospital Regional

Ethics Board and the Schulman Institutional Review Board.

Dr. Kim is passionate about medical education and he develops educational programs and lectures frequently to

physicians about pain management.

KERIN MORETON, ALHC, FLMI, ACS, AIAA

Kerin Moreton is the AVP Claims Services, responsible for all Canadian non-Quebec Life, Group, DI,

CI, AD & D and Travel claims at Munich Re. Kerin has been with Munich Re for 18 years in

progressive roles.

As AVP, Kerin leads a seasoned team of Claim Account Managers in resolving complex and large

claims, best practices development and training, claim audits, publications and seminars and is also

responsible for local and global claim projects for Munich Re, Canada (Life). She is a regular speaker

at industry conferences, including CIA, LOMA, CRC, CLHIA and CLBS, is a current executive member

of the LOMA Claim Section and is past Chair of the CLHIA Claims Section Conference.

LORAINE OMAN-GANES, MD, FRCPC, CCMG, FACMG

Loraine Oman-Ganes is Chief Medical Director at Sun Life Financial (Corporate Risk Management)

based in Toronto. Her previous role was Chief Medical Director for RBC Insurance. She is a board-

certified clinical geneticist and pediatrician, who completed her B.Sc. (Biology), M.D. and pediatric

residency at the University of Saskatchewan, and her fellowship in Clinical Genetics at the

University of Michigan. She has worked as a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York Medical

College in Westchester County Medical Center, NY, a staff clinical geneticist at North York General

Hospital in Toronto, and her own community-based clinical genetics practice in Toronto. She

developed the initial preventative genetics program “Medcan Genetics” at the Medcan Clinic in

Toronto, and has provided the full range of genetic testing, from classical genetics to genomics,

including pharmacogenetics testing.

Her insurance industry activities include: past president and past scientific chair- CLIMOA (Canadian Life Insurance

Medical Officers’ Association), past member - CLHIA (Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association) Committee on

Underwriting Issues and subcommittee on Critical Illness Definitions, and chair - AAIM (American Academy of Insurance

Medicine) Professional and Public Relations Committee.

Her goal is to enhance communication and knowledge sharing between the genetics community and the insurance

industry. Dr. Oman-Ganes is passionate in her commitment to mentorship, education, and the belief that genetics can

be used as a tool to enhance literacy and health.

BETSY SEARS, MSM, MT (ASCP)

As Executive Vice President, Laboratory Strategy and Sales, at ExamOne, Betsy has almost 30

years of experience in the insurance laboratory environment. She works closely with ExamOne’s

laboratory operations, research and development, and medical and sales staff, on client end-to-

end strategic solutions, and also supports insurance customers through a variety of

presentations on laboratory, medical and risk assessment topics.

Prior to joining ExamOne, Betsy served as Vice President and Laboratory Director of Osborn

Laboratories for 14 years. She also has more than 11 years of experience in clinical and hospital

laboratory settings in New York City and Chicago, specializing in microbiology.

Betsy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the University of

Missouri – Kansas City and her Master’s degree in Business Management from Baker University. 6

MONICA WILSON, MD

Dr. Monica Wilson is the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Swiss Re Life

and Health Products. She is the current treasurer and was past President of CLIMOA

(Canadian Life Insurance Medical Officers Association).

Dr. Wilson's background is Intensive Care medicine. She joined Swiss Brokers of Mexico in

2002, as a part time medical consultant. In 2004, Dr. Wilson retired from clinical medicine to

join Swiss Re in the Zurich hub where she worked as a Medical Officer, providing

underwriting consultation and education for Swiss Re Underwriters and their clients,

spanning across Continental Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

In July 2006, Dr. Wilson returned Canada, her home country, to join Swiss Re Life and Health where she provides

underwriting consultation, support and education for Swiss Re Underwriters in the USA and Canada as well as for Swiss

Re’s Canadian, American and Caribbean clients.
