Anechoic chambers

An anechoic chamber is a RF shielded room whose

walls and ceiling have been covered with microwave

absorbers that scatter or absorb so much of the incident

energy that it can simulate free space. The anechoic

chamber is typically used to house the equipment for

performing measurements of antenna radiation patterns,

electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radar cross

section (RCS) measurements. Testing can be conducted

on various electronic devices, vehicles, aircraft, or

spacecraft. Semi anechoic chamber constructions are

designed for radiated emission and immunity testing.

Microwave or antenna test chambers are designed to

perform measurements of antenna characteristics.

Comtest Engineering can design and supply the

following (standard) anechoic chamber solutions:

• Compact (semi / full) anechoic chamber

• Semi anechoic chamber, test distance: 3m, 5m, 10m

• Anechoic chamber for automotive testing

(components / full vehicle)

• Anechoic chamber for MIL-STD / Tempest testing

• Antenna pattern measurement room

• (compact) Antenna test range

Semi anechoic chambers (EMC)

The main purpose of a semi anechoic chamber is to

perform measurements of radio frequency emission

or immunity from electronic products at 3,5 or 10mtr

measurement range length. The combination of the pan-

type 2mm galvanized panel system and the polystyrene

hybrid absorber solution on the walls and ceiling

eliminates unwanted electrical noise and complies with

international emission and immunity test standards.

The semi anechoic chamber is a multi functional

test environment for commercial, military, R&D and

automotive testing.

Features of a typical semi anechoic chamber:

• Full compliance emission test site for frequency

range of 30MHz to 18GHz as per CISPR 16-1-4

• Full compliance immunity test site for frequency

range of 80MHz to 6GHz as per IEC/EN 61000-4-3

• Shielding effectiveness according to EN 50147-1

up to 40GHz

Typical performance of a semi anechoic chamber:

• NSA: +/- 4 dB

• FU: 75% of 16 points comply with +6 dB

requirements

• sVSWR: below 6 dB

Options for a (semi) anechoic chamber:

• An additional RF shielded room can be installed to

house high power RF amplifiers (amplifier room) or

control and test equipment (control room).

• Video and audio monitoring system

• Various fibre optic converter systems for USB and

Ethernet.

• EUT test table

• Various special positioning equipment
