SEM FEBRUARY 1, 2017
From the Superintendent’s Desk
— Mr. Finkey
I would like to thank everyone for the support
that they showed during the Grand Opening of
the New & Renovated Building. It was a grand
night not only for the students and staff, but
also to all the stakeholders of the SEM district.
The new addition includes; five new classroom,
two locker rooms, a concessions area, a
student loft, 6 new restrooms, a ADA approved
elevator, reception area and Principal’s office.
Additionally, the new gym is an incredible
addition to the community. Renovations
included a new central office area, with 2 new
office spaces, a nurses room, and a small
conference room, renovations to 8 existing
classrooms and improvements in the hallways.
We had nearly 100 guests sign in upon arrival
with many alumni dating back several decades.
It was really exciting giving tours of the building
and seeing the faces of people as they viewed
the transformation of the school. Altogether it
was estimated that nearly 300 students, staff,
patrons and visitors attended the grand
opening. For anyone who would like to have a
tour of the new facilities, please feel free to
contact the school, and we will make
arrangements for you!
Winter Weather
The winter weather is already upon us, and has already forced the closure of school on one day, and later
starts on a few other. Please know that all decisions for modification or cancelation of school is based on
student and staff safety. Whenever possible announcements will be made the day prior to a late start of
cancelation. Our method of notifications includes the following, school reach phone message and text,
school website and Facebook, KRVN and KOLN. If you are reading this, and currently are not receiving
school reach messages and would like to have them, please notify Mr. Schmidt at SEM schools, and he
will get your account set up.

Mustang Report
By Bill Schmidt
The month of January has come and gone, and old man winter has been giving us a few fits. I hope that you are all doing well, and I hope that the sick bug doesn’t bite you. Several schools in the area have had a lot of issues with illness, and for the most part SEM has been okay. I would encourage you to remind your children to wash their hands frequently and to bundle up when they go outside. Thank you for your help in keeping SEM school a healthy place to learn.
The staff of SEM has worked hard in preparation to the external visit that we will have in March. There were four different committees, and they looked at student data, survey data, our demographics, and the programs that are offered at SEM. I will be working on compiling that information and sending it off to the
external team, and they will be at SEM on March 16th. I greatly appreciate the work of the staff, and the input
from the surveys will be used to help make changes and improve SEM Public Schools.
In case you have not heard, the students at SEM are working hard, and have
been representing the school in a large variety of ways. MeKenzie Beattie went to Denver, CO and had a great showing at the National Western Stock Show. Jasmine Vasquez and Sara Ripp attended the UNK Honor Choir. Jake Stieb has led the way for the Mustang wrestlers earning medals at the past few meets. The girls’ basketball team has been playing much better lately and beat Eustis-Farnam last weekend. The boys’ basketball team is 12-0 and is one of the best teams in the state in class D2.
I am very proud of all of the hard work that the students and staff of SEM. I greatly appreciate the support of the parents and community members. The sportsmanship and character that the students show on a consistent basis, is something we should all try to emulate. When call does not go their way, and they are faced with adversity, they have handled it will class and dignity. Thank you Mustangs!

NPPD Visit Brings
Energy to Life at SEM
SEM — Science, Mrs. Jean Pierce
SEM’s 8th-12th grade science classes were enLIGHTened on January 10th in the topics of energy in science and electrical safety.
Chad Johnson from NPPD shared several hands-on interactive presentations which emphasized that “first and foremost, knowledge is the key to electrical safety.”
The presentation for each class was specifically designed to correspond with what the students have been studying in their science classes. Some topics included: electrical safety, the science of energy, alternative energy, energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, balancing our resources, forms of energy and energy transfer.
The activity packed day concluded with a challenge for the seniors to incorporate all seven forms of energy in their Rube Goldberg project. They succeeded in the utilizing the following six: radiant, thermal, mechanical, chemical, electrical and sound energy. They agreed that if they consider the fact that almost all energy originates from the sun (which produces nuclear energy) then they accomplished their
SEM Pre-School 100 Day Celebration
PK—Mrs. Lana Schroeder
We celebrated our 100th Day of school with a lot of fun activities. We started the day writing
in our journal about what we could and couldn’t eat 100 of. During stations, the kids worked
in groups of 4 to make something using 100 items. They chose from popsicle sticks, unifix
cubes, pattern blocks and blocks. We made a 100th day snack with the 100 items each kid
brought. We walked 100 steps to see how far we could go in the school and we ended up at
the new locker rooms. We did 100 exercises and we also tried to keep our balloon in the air
for 100 seconds. The kids tried to write their names 10 times in 100 seconds and their
numbers from 1-10.
SEM Kindergarten Class
The Kindergarten class along with their teacher Mrs.
Hannah Bowman celebrated the 100th day of school
with a cup stacking project in the gym!
A GREAT DAY TO BE A MUSTANG!
