Gabriels Abu! Huge congratulations to Gabriel's minors who took on

Ballyvourney team Naomh Abhan in the South West Minor B Football

Championship in Aughavile last Sunday afternoon. The lads had a tough

battle on their hands with the scoreline remaining in the opponents favour

until the final minutes of the match when both James O'Regan and Danny

McSweeney scored points to bring a fantastic winning result

of Gabriel Rangers 1.13 to Naomh Abhan 1.10. Well done

lads and we wish you continued success.

Brendan Molloy of Lowertown is

pleased to announce the arrival, on

Friday September 29th, of a Russian

Youth Choir to West Cork. The choir

which goes by the name of, 'Stavros

Youth Choir' comes from the city of

Tolyatti, which is in the south east

region of European Russia. There will

be 21 people in the group which is

predominantly made up of young

people both male and female. The

choir has performed in many cities

throughout Europe but this will be their very first visit to Ireland. Whilst they

are in West Cork, they will be performing two concerts, details of which are

as follows. The first choir will take place on Saturday September 30th. at St

James Church, Durrus at 8pm and the second concert will take place at Ab-

beystrewry Church Skibbereen on Sunday October 1st. at 3pm. The choir was

originally meant to come to West Cork back in August but due to a visa tech-

nicality the choir was forbidden to travel to Cork via London. This caused

much personal and financial stress along with much disappointment to the

group, but however they were so determined to come to West Cork, they re-

booked fights and are now very much looking forward to their visit to West

Cork. Brendan hopes that the West Cork welcome which is now recognised

and respected throughout many parts of the world, including Russia will be

afforded to this young group and that many people from our local communi-

ties will attend the concerts and experience the beautiful voices and singing

of the choir. Concert ticketing details are as follows;

St James Church, Durrus: €10 Adults; €5 Students/Children.

Contact Brendan Molloy on 087-972-3385; 028-48242. or Brendan O'Dwyer

on 087-935-7151. Tickets also available at the door on the night.

Abbeystrewry Church Skibbereen: €20.Tickets can be purchases at

Thornhills, or by text on 086-226-4797 or at the door.

Health Matters -Look After Yourself! Seasonal Flu Vaccine Information - HSE Guidelines:

There has been a steady increase in the number of cases of flu in recent years.

Flu is a very infectious and potentially serious illness and a new flu vaccine must be given each year.

Flu can cause severe illness and can even be life threatening for older people, those who have a long term illness and pregnant women.

Flu is a highly infectious acute respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus.

Influenza affects people of all ages. Outbreaks of flu occur almost every year, usually in winter. This is why it is also known as seasonal flu.

Flu can be prevented by vaccination. Flu vaccination is a safe, effective way to help prevent flu infection, avoid hospitalisation and reduce flu-related deaths and illnesses.

Get the vaccine, not the flu! The HSE is urging people in at-risk groups to get vaccinated against influenza. Vaccination is strongly recommended for:

persons aged 65 and older

those with long term medical conditions such as diabe-

tes and chronic heart, kidney, lung or neurological dis-ease

people whose immune system is impaired due to dis-

ease or treatment including all cancer patients

persons with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40

pregnant women (at any stage in pregnancy)

residents of nursing homes and other long stay institu-

tions

people with regular close contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs

health care workers, carers

If you are in one of the at risk groups and have not had your flu vaccine, contact your GP or pharmacist to get the vaccine NOW

If you are 65 or over or have a long term medical condition you should also ask your doctor about the pneumococcal vaccine.

The HSE provides the flu and pneumococcal vaccines free of charge for all those in the at-risk groups.

Those aged 18 years or older in the at-risk groups may at-tend either their GP or pharmacist for vaccination and those under 18 years should attend their GP.

The vaccine and consultation are free for those with a Medi-cal Card or GP Visit Card.

Those without a Medical Card or GP Visit Card will be charged a consultation fee.

The seasonal flu campaign for 2017/2018 will continue until the end of April 2018.

Reminder: Goleen & District Community Council and the

HSE are facilitating a safeTALK workshop on Monday 2nd Oc-

tober 2017 from 7 - 10pm in Goleen Community Centre.

The purpose of this workshop is to learn four basic steps to

recognise when people have thoughts of suicide, and what to

do. The course will help you to identify people with thoughts

of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with

thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with pain in

their lives. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these symptoms and take

action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as

caregivers trained in ASIST. The safeTALK training programme is suitable for

everyone over the age of 18 years of age , who would like to help prevent

suicide in the community.

People wishing to attend the workshop or looking for further infor-

mation please contact: Bernard O’ Sullivan by phone or email:
