Sella turcica is asaddle shaped

depression on thebody of sphenoidbone in the middle

cranial fossa, whichlodges the pituitary

gland.

Method :

Sella turcica length is obtained by

measuring the distance between the midpointof tuberculum sellae and midpoint of dorsumsellae

Sella turcica depth is measured at thedeepest part of the sella and is at right anglesto the direction of the length of sella turcica

Sella turcica breadthis measured from themidpoint of the medial margin of carotid sulcusof both sides

Sella turcica area = Area x Breadth

Discuccion :

The average Sella turcica length rangesbetween 7 to 14mm

The average Sella turcica depth rangesbetween 6 to 12mm

The average sella turcica breadth ranges

between 9 to 15mm

The mean Sella turcica area is 137.07mm

Size of the sella turcica :

Shape :

According to the study by Axelsson et al(2004), shape of sella turcica was categorizedinto six main types :

a. Normal saddle shaped (66%)

b. Oblique anterior wall (4%)c. Double contour of the floor

(5.5%)

d. Sella turcica bridging (1.1%)e. Irregularity in the posterior

wall of sella turcica (16.7%)f. Pyramidal shape of the

dorsum sellae (7.7%)

A deviation from normal size andshape of sella turcica indicates

-Neoplasias-Embryonic abnormalities-pathological states

A larger size of sella may be anindication of pituitary tumor

The data of these morphometric

variations helps the neurosurgeons formicrosurgical approach of hypophysis intheir pathological states and tumors

The sella turcica is an important anatomicalstructure for cephalometric assessment

Within the centre of the sella lies the sellapoint helps in evaluation of craniofacialmorphology

This sella point with the nasion forms theSella-nasion line/plane which is used as areference line for orthodontic treatment andalso by neurosurgeons

Conclusion:

The results of this study constitutequantitative data of sella turcica whichis used significantly by neurologists and

orthodontists in evaluating tumors andjaw relations

Pathological enlargement of thepituitary fossa can also be assessed with

the help of these parameters
