Built in the 16th century is an Ottoman imperial mosque, which is located in the city of Edirne,

Turkey. The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II, and was built by architect Mimar Sinan

between 1569 and 1575.

THE MINARETS

 

harmonious role in the overall composition   four minarets with three balconies each 

  All pulpits in the four minarets are plain 

  surfaces are adorned with perpendicular

bars so that bodies seem thinner 

  The balconies are adorned with grid

banisters designed in classical style of the age

  Marble orbs were placed on the faces which

see the center of the Mosque of the big legs

INNER COURT AND FOUNTAIN

  three doors lead to the fountain 

  All three of them are elegantly inlaid and porphyritic 

  epigraph above the middle door of the mosque which shows the starting and the ending dates

of the construction 

  18 little domes which surround the fountain court 

 

columns were brought from Egypt, Cyprus, from around Kapıdağı Peninsula, from the ruins of

Aydıncık and Syria 

  white marble fountain with a sixteen-sided plan

WINDOWS

 

384 windows in Selimiye Mosque  different rhythms and figures 

  Besmele-i Şerife (a short Islamic saying) and Ayet-el

Kursi (an ayet from Bakara Sura) are written on the right and

final ayet of Fetih Sura is written on the left in ceramics  

  window surroundings had the same Baroque style 

  adorned with the longitudinal repetition of simple,

hollow, sharp and black leaves 

CEILING ADORNMENTS

  In the center, there is a wheel of fortune

in a square frame 

  sides of the wheel of fortune built only

with wooden pieces are curvilinearly sliced; wide

surfaces are adorned with red and golden foils 

  middle spaces completing the square are

black.
