baillieu librarywith 3.6 million books and other items, the university of Melbourne library is one of the biggest in australia.

The University Library operates in 13 locations across our campuses, with the Baillieu Library (6a) being the University’s largest discipline library, housing the arts, humanities and social sciences collections.

The nearby bookshop supplies student texts and reading requirements.

On the far side of the library is the Conservatorium of Music (6b). Inside is Melba Hall, named after Dame Nellie Melba, a celebrated Australian opera singer and former student of the Conservatorium. Free concerts at Melba Hall are a feature of campus life.

walk south past the baillieu library to the entrance of the underground car park which lies right under the South lawn.

6

underGround car Park this is not your average car park! the grand entrance (7a) was once the doorway to the colonial bank in the city, and the car park has won several architectural awards. it even featured in the Mel Gibson film, Mad Max, and is still the site of numerous balls, music festivals and underground markets.

Directly behind you is the medical precinct. The Brownless Biomedical Library (7b) has a collection of medical instruments and medicine chests as well as a nineteenth century pharmacy.

Walk around the front of the car park, past the brush fence until you get to the steps leading up to the South Lawn.

To your right is Grattan Street and across it University Square and Melbourne Law School. To the right of the law building is the Commerce building, which is called The Spot, for obvious reasons!

on the corner of wilson avenue and kernot road you will see engineering’s block a building.

7

enGineerinG block a and a Student centre this building houses the engineering Student centre (8a) – one of many student centres on campus.

Student Centres are the first port of call for study information and advice once you’re enrolled. Student Centre staff can help with administrative and transactional services such as enrolment, fees, results, assessment, transcripts and student ID cards. They can also provide individual advice on course planning, subject selection and pathways to future employment or further study.

leave the engineering building and walk north up wilson avenue until you get to wilson hall.

8

wilSon hall built in the 1880s in the grand, gothic style deemed appropriate for an important seat of learning, wilson hall (9a) burned to the ground in 1952.

Its replacement was built in a modern style to reflect Melbourne’s coming of age as host to the 1956 Olympic Games.

Today the hall is used for exams, exhibitions, performances and graduation ceremonies.

Three original ceremonial chairs salvaged from the fire are permanently displayed in the foyer.

From wilson hall walk east, along Monash road, to Gate 4 on Swanston Street.

9

Gate 4 – corner MonaSh road and SwanSton StreetMelbourne’s central business district is just minutes away by tram and easily accessible from the tram stop immediately opposite Gate 4.

To your right is the Sidney Myer Asia Centre (10a) and next to it the John Smyth Building (10b) which houses Melbourne Global Mobility – turn over to read more about Melbourne Global Mobility.

Directly opposite the John Smyth Building is the Melbourne Dental Hospital and School of Dental Science.

A block beyond is Lygon Street (10c) – one of Melbourne’s premier entertainment districts crowded with cafes and restaurants, shops and cinemas.

turn north and you will return to the information centre where your journey started. we hope you enjoyed the tour.

10

univerSity inForMation centre, richard berry buildinG, SwanSton Streetthe information centre (1a) offers information on course and study options, access to the university’s website and advice on university services.

To the north is the Elisabeth Murdoch Building and close by is the Ian Potter Museum of Art (1b) which houses a collection of classical and contemporary art. Formerly the site of a morgue, the Elisabeth Murdoch Building was positioned in the far corner of the campus to prevent unpleasant odours permeating the University grounds.

Looking west down Masson Road toward the centre of the campus you will see a cross section of the thirteen architectural styles represented at Parkville. Many buildings were designed by leading architects of the time.

As you walk toward the Raymond Priestley Building you will pass the Old Geology Building (1c) on your left, which was constructed in 1927 in red brick instead of sandstone due to budgetary constraints.

Walk across the Union Lawn (1d). It was originally a lake extending as far as Wilson Hall to the west. It’s now a popular spot for student relaxation, entertainment and University events.

On the right, at the far side of the lawn is the Baldwin Spencer Building (1e) – home to a range of student services including the Scholarships Office, Financial Aid, Student Housing and the Disability Liaison Unit.

cross tin alley (named because it was once lined with a corrugated-iron fence) and head toward the athletics track.

1

Melbourne univerSity SPortthe sports precinct at the university of Melbourne is among the very best in Melbourne.

There are over 40 sporting clubs at the University.

The Beaurepaire Centre (2a) on your left was used for training during the 1956 Olympic Games and includes a 25-metre, six-lane heated indoor lap pool and a large strength and fitness gym that overlooks the athletic track and sports field.

The Sports Centre (2b) on your right houses four dedicated group fitness studios – offering classes in everything from yoga and Pilates to Cardio Box – as well as squash courts and massage and physiotherapy services.

On the far side of the athletics track (2c) are ten of the University’s 12 residential colleges (2d). The colleges are mostly confined to the northern perimeter of the campus (turn over to read more about the residential colleges).

Lincoln Square Fitness is Melbourne University Sport’s newest facility, offering gym equipment and group fitness programs. Located at 183 Bouverie Street (corner of Pelham Street), Lincoln Square Fitness is easily accessed off of Swanston Street and tram stop 3.

head towards union house via north court.

2

union houSe union house is the key hub for the Student union, a representative body for all students that provides cultural and support services as well as organising activities for students throughout the year.

The Union House site was once home to the National Museum – a popular tourist destination in the 1860s. It was handed over to the student representative council in 1910.

Today it has a food court, hairdresser, chemist, travel agent, clubs and societies offices and several theatres.

North Court (3a), just directly outside Union House, is used regularly for lunchtime concerts. Each week it hosts a market where students can buy cheap clothes, jewellery, books and more.

On the south side of Union House is the Old Physics Building, which houses the Murrup Barak, Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development.

head west and continue through the gates at the entry to the Systems Garden.

3

SySteMS Garden the Systems Garden (4a) was designed by the University’s first Botany professor as a learning tool for students – it is laid out in accordance with the natural classification of plants.

The original tower still survives but the glass conservatory has long since been dismantled.

Return to Professors’ Walk and proceed south before turning left either between the Natural Philosophy and Old Arts buildings or through the Old Arts Building itself.

If you choose to walk through Old Arts look for signs directing visitors to the Public Lecture Theatre (4b). A brief look inside the theatre offers a sense of the University learning environment.

once clear of the old arts building you will enter cussonia court. head towards the old law Quadrangle.

4

old law QuadranGlethis is one of the original university buildings.

The north wing contained classrooms and a library, while the east and west wings contained apartments for the professors.

On the north east wall is a plaque (5a) which commemorates the eight-hour working day. In 1856 brick-masons working at the University downed tools and marched into the city, joining other labourers who refused to work until they obtained an eight-hour day. Today we celebrate this victory as Labour Day.

Exit via Cussonia Court to the South Lawn (5b). This area used to be a car park which has been relocated underground. The lawn provides a recreational area for students and staff.Overlooking the lawn is one of the University’s most iconic structures – the clock tower (5c).
