ABOUT US

Philosophy Design Plus believes in creating environments that are contemporary, multi-layered and sensitive to contextual conditions. Established in Delhi in 1981, by Arun K. Bij and Deepak Puri, our studio’s adaptability and school of thought has established a foot hold in each decade. We have evolved from a post-modern idiom to current didactic and vibrant global needs with exchanges of varying information at the root; from a unitary client to an organized development sector. Here at Design Plus we strive to develop environmentally and morphologically responsible designs within market and programmatic pressures and attempt to overlap our goals with our clients’.

Residential Arcadia

Site PlanUrban CourtsRecreational CourtTower Configurations_12UnitSite Elevation

Program - 600 Units (Single Room + Duplex), Landscaped theme courts, Recreational facilities, Cooperative provisions.

THE SETTLEMENT......The proposed residential environment borrows its planning and organization from traditional spatial structuring, where by the built masses were organized around specified courtyards.

The courtyards, carrying forth their climatic significance, maintain security and functional efficiency. Each court has a defined program and the resultant detailing.

THE LANDSCAPE......The divisions into courts creates neighbourhoods within the spread-out enclave. These neighbourhoods are charged by careful treatment and detailing of textures and materials, to create environments that carry a distinctive image. Each court - Urban, Recreational & Agrarian - carries a specified theme and the involved elements are tastefully chosen and organized to achieve the desired results.

BUILT MASS FLEXIBILITY AND VOLUME GENERATION......   The Design scheme presents its units in an arrangement of 3 tower types:

- 12, 08, 04 UNIT TOWERS    In addition we went ahead and enhanced the flexibility of the unit arrangement within the towers itself. Each floor plate of every tower type has a unique configuration of units, maintaining the structural integrity.   The Duplex and Simplex units have been juggled and fitted into a never ending jigsaw. The result - every floor, every tower, and hence every neighbourhood carries an independent image.   THE VARIED TREATMENT......   The fluid floor plates are magnified by the elevation. The buildings, when arranged on site provide a non-repetetive image, and attempt to break away from the conventional housing issue - “loss of identity”.   To enhance this variation in appearance, the Duplex Units are treated with altered textures and materials.

An eco-friendly holiday resort conceptualized to harness the fantastic views of a deep mountain valley, which rises up to the Nandadevi Himalayan Range. The Linear strip of Land with its modest built mass is camouflaged by the natural terrain The layout and the plantation strategy enables the hill to subsume the entire Resort into its own texture. The humble architecture echoes the passion of the owner and the tranquility of the setting.   The rooms, designed in detail, as typical Kumauni cottages offer extensions in terms of verandahs or glazed sit-outs, overlooking the flower & fruit plantations.   The built structures are crafted by locally available brick, stone, wood and labour.

Corporate and Institutional Hub

Site PlanGlimpses

A Vocational training centre offering work spaces to independently operating establishments.   The challenge lay in providing, several different users with varying demands, a functional and aesthetically superior infrastructure.   Every Floor plate was divided into modules of 8M x 4M, and linked with shared services.   The program was kept fluid and was developed over results of a never-ending market survey.   Carefully detailed facades respect the hot jaipur climate. The altering depth of the louvres are dictated by the orientation of the work spaces. Glazing and atriums are provided to maximize natural light and minimize the heat load.   To enhance social interaction & community participation, the complex is generously landscaped with open lawns, plazas, amphitheater and recreational pools.

THE URBAN GROUND.....

Highlighting the important distinction between Urbanism and Urbanization, we propose the Urban Ground. This is a model of urbanism that attempts to dilute the extremities between the natural and the human imposed context. At the Macro-level, the urban ground respects the once nature dominated skyline and simultaneously the needfor human intervention. At the Meso-level, acknowledging the pressures exerted by the site’s morphology, the Urban Ground acts as an extension of the existing terrain, both as a blend or an additive layer. This ground can be understood as a surface at the Microlevel, that negotiates topography and accommodates functional deployments, performing as a roof, a ground, and occupiable space, depending on its own gradient and the variation in its thickness.

TOOLING...

We break down tooling into algorithmic reasoning. The architectural and planning decisions are supported by custom written codes that create a certain degree of accidental yet consistent results. The modulation of codes provide a repertoire of formal outputs, demonstrating relations and their evolution, loading the project with glaring information.A series of conducted operations generate 2D patterns, 3D forms, and varying spatial configurations that are open to interpretation. With our machinic processes we attempt to balance the theoretical, digital, and intuitive input.

LANDSCAPING....

The goal of the landscape concept for the campus is to reinforce the urban design concept for the community, respond to environmental issues, provide aesthetic distinction to open spaces, and provide visual continuity and compatibility with the architectural design.• Utilize plantings that reinforce open space organizational principles and circulation patterns.• Selection of plant materials appropriate for their environment and setting.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY....

The design process incorporates an environmental optimization strategy that responds to microclimateconditions. Water elements such as fountains and spillways are utilized to increase localized radiant cooling.Surface runoff collection and storage are utilized to supplement irrigation water supplies and promote ground water recharge, accomplished with bio-detention basins, infiltration swales, filter swales and hard surface collection and filtration points. THE KNOWLEDGE ENCLAVE.....   The planning of the school permits its inhabitants to gather a range of enlightening experiences and absorb more than a pre-planned curriculum. The Enclaves offers the potential of discoveries and debates by the virtue of its programmatic inclusions and planning.   To re-instate with a few examples:  -The plantation strategy combining seasonal and perennial flora showcases a repertoire of colors and texture.  -The demarcated village provides a glimpse of vegetation and habitation within a rural setting.   -A well equipped sports academy offers the proverbial need for physical/ athletic development.   -The energy conscious decisions of organizing masses around moist courts along-with architectural articulation (concerning day-lighting, heat gain, construction materials) throw some light on our responsibility towards the planets limited resources.

Namchi Sai Temple

Proposal

With paying respect to and highlighting the Kunchunjunga range as the starting point of the design exercise, the temple complex was planned on a gradual site gradient. The steel truss roof reflected the presence of the picturesque backdrop at every level, from its profile to the snow white colour. At the ground level, the complex adheres to a detailed activity chart and movement patterns, with pronounced nodes and their respective functions making the journey through the complex a spiritual experience.

This building has been designed and constructed with an intension of educating the owner and his clients, the strengths of granite and slate as construction materials.

Entire facade has been detailed with cladding slate in six different possibilities, to expose its structural qualities and aesthetic appeal.

The interiors, like the facade, have been dealt with granite as the primary material and exploiting it to the maximum, by using in floor inlays, table tops, counter tops, mouldings etc.

Spatial Assessment_Research

In an attempt to define perception of space and its psychological impact, we propose a prototypical residential layout. To establish a justifies testing field we established maximum number of constant parameters, such as internal and external lighting conditions, material, day of the year, time of the day, choice of room, camera angle etc. The only variable being skin of adjacent facades. The setup was divided into:

1. Reality2. Obscured Reality

1. Colour2. Texture

3. Limited Reality4. Generated Reality
