The Design Partnership has had the opportunity to work

at the three main UCSF campuses.

    1. The original campus at Parnassus Heights is made up

of a tight network of buildings where faculty, staff, stu-

dents and other are engaged in patient care, research

and education activities. Covering almost six blocks, the

campus serves as a headquarters for UCSF leadership.

    2. UCSFs Mount Zion campus is a hub of specialized

medical center clinics and surgery services. In addition

to housing the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive

Cancer Center, Mount Zion boasts a growing network

    of outpatient services.

    3. Mission Bay is UCSFs newest teaching and research

campus. With more than 1 million square feet of re-

search space, the thriving campus will include a 289-

bed integrated hospital complex to serve women, chil-

dren and cancer patients when completed in 2014.

    CONNIE FRANK TRANSPLANT CENTERParnassus Heights

The design recognizes the gift of life and the incred-

ible act of generosity when one donates their organ to

a loved one. Located on the 7th floor of the Ambula-

tory Care Center, the design incorporates extraordi-

nary views of the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown

San Francisco. The Center was conceived to provide

comprehensive patient services for kidney transplant

in a calm and graceful environment. The project pro-

vides a single home and a single place for patients

to visit, housing a variety of transplant services which

were previously scattered throughout many buildings

    on campus.

The innovative design decentralizes charting, allows

for more efficient use of space, and re-defines the

treatment areas by segregating other functions of the

department. By working closely with UCSF staff, the

design supports the first full use of electronic medical

records in an ED. The remodeled ED has 27 examina-

tion rooms with administrative support space and spe-

cialized radiology services, including the first 64-slice

CT scanner at UCSF and a robotic diagnostic Xray.

The existing department was entirely renovated, re-

quiring extensive construction phasing while keeping

the existing emergency department in operation during

the 23 month construction schedule. During all phases

of work, the design team worked with hospital staff to

address safety requirements and allow staff to effec-

tively administer services to patients and meet admin-

istrative needs during all phases of work.

As 3D diagnostics become more complex, the tools for

better navigation in less time are needed. Our team

reoriented the existing spaces to move noisy equipment

racks outside the room. A modular storage system al-

lows for more storage volume and is easily reconfig-

ured as technology evolves. The physicians and staff

worked closely with the design team and, by use of

3D architectural visualization, allowed them to pick the

right shades of color to create a comfortable patient

experience as well as an uncluttered environment for

    staff.

When we were asked to add a new OR in an already

crowded environment we began by looking for space.

After conducting a MedModel analysis of the opera-

tions in the OR suite we were able to reconfigure the

core and move much of the seldom used product out

of the suite. The remodel added two operating rooms,

a new nurses station, staff offices, storage rooms and

replaced the mechanical equipment serving the spaces

in the existing surgery floor while all ORs remained

operational. The new 550 SF OR accommodates a

DaVinci robot with a parking garage attached. The

latest IT integration systems were installed to remotely

view operations and allow the surgical team to access

critical patient data in the OR. Both ORs have ceiling

mounted equipment booms and lights beneath a newly

installed laminar airflow ceiling system. The new ceil-

ing assembly was only inches from the existing beams

requiring a high degree of 3D coordination using the

    latest architectural software tools.

BIOENGINEERING + T ISSUE RESEARCHParnassus Heights This cross-disciplinary laboratory, located on the 5th

floor of Health Sciences East, examines the engineer-

ing, growth and transplant of new tissues. The design

provides specialized research space and also provides

a new Center or social hub for Bioengineering and

Tissue Research at UCSF. By locating special equip-

ment, such as the atomic force microscope, near social

and centralized areas to the department, researchers

from elsewhere can use the shared equipment. Because

of the rapidly evolving nature of this field of research,

the laboratory is designed to be exceptionally flexible

and adaptable to future changes. The project is LEED

    Silver certified.

Laboratory research thrives on human interaction; in

turn, the design for this laboratory on the 4th floor of

Health Sciences West revolves around a central social

hub. The wet laboratories, offices, and support spaces

all branch out from the social gathering space at the

main intersection. The new laboratory accommodates

five principal researchers and their 55 person cancer

research team in a light-filled space, designed for ulti-

    mate use and future flexibility.

The use of BIM for this, UCSFs first BIM project, allowed

for the project to be bid under budget and be com-

pleted ahead of schedule. Rather than follow the tra-

ditional model of project delivery, this project was as

close to IPD as possible - resulting in an AIA award for

Integrated Project Delivery. Following its opening, the

project was recognized by Mayor Newsom as one of

    San Franciscos 10 greenest projects.

HUMAN GENET ICS DRY LABORATORYParnassus Heights

Although it is a narrow space, the design focused on

making the laboratory appear spacious and bright.

To accomplish this, the perimeter offices transmit bor-

rowed light to the interior via floor-to-ceiling translu-

cent glass. Located on the ninth floor of the Medical

Sciences Building at Parnassus Heights, this renova-

tion converted existing wet laboratory space into dry

labs, offices for research faculty, and open offices for

residents, students and administrative staff. The design

also extended into the adjacent corridor as a means

of upgrading finishes and improving code compliance.

Moffitt Hospital and Medical Sciences Building were

constructed as a single structure. To avoid the need

to seismically upgrade MSB and to avoid further ma-

jor upgrades in Moffitt Hospital to meet current seismic

standards, the design team proposed a clever solution:

to separate the two buildings by means of a 15-story

seismic joint. Minimizing impact to adjacent occupants

was critical. The design team utilized vibration isolation

studies and innovative engineering to avoid vibration

and acoustical disturbance to nearby executive offices.

The project also includes significant renovation to the

information systems distribution and will help make the

    building more accessible.

    MSB MECHANICAL SYSTEMS REPLACEMENTParnassus Heights

The Medical Sciences Building is home to many of UC-

SFs medical research laboratories. Natural ventilation

was appropriate for research in 1955 when the build-

ing was constructed, but todays studies can no longer

tolerate vacillations of temperature - even in San Fran-

ciscos benign climate. The goal of this project was to

convert the existing ventilation system to air condition-

ing and to upgrade the structure to meet current Uni-

versity of California seismic standards, all at minimal

cost. Specific attention was focused on the curtain wall

    design facing Saunders Court.
