Message from

the President

Dear Brothers,

We have had a fantastic year thanks to your generous support. We started off by celebrating the Power of Music at the largest National Convention in our history. The music throughout the week was inspiring and many of our brothers were able to participate in the Convention Ensembles program thanks to the increase in travel grants. In conjunction with the Fraternity’s effort to honor those that have served our country, the SEF also announced the addition of a scholarship to honor the memory of one of our fallen brothers, Chris Patterson. We’ve committed to annually fund this scholarship until it is fully endowed.

We continue to look for ways to help our brothers in need. One recent example was when the SEF created a temporary fund to collect gifts for the School of Music at University of Southern Mississippi after a storm resulted in the loss of music, instruments and one of the buildings used for performances was destroyed. We more than matched the gifts received as we sent a grant to help the school recover from this disaster.

Our existing programs are growing as a record number of brothers applied for scholarships this past year. As the cost of education rises, we need to do more to help young Sinfonians prepare for their future careers as music performers, educators, and supporters. In addition to the travel grants provided at this past summer’s Leadership Institute, the SEF also subsidized the additional expenses for brothers in the Men of Song Chorus. I had the honor of attending their concert and was blown away by the quality of the program.

However, the new development that I am the most excited about is the grant we just presented to The MusicianShip. This organization represents everything that Sinfonia is about as they work to provide music enrichment programs to at-risk youth. Currently based in Washington DC, the MusicianShip came to the SEF looking for a partner in its expansion efforts. I am so proud that we can be part of a program that is making such a profound impact.

The SEF continues to focus on enriching lives and advancing music. The growth in our programs and new developments are only possible with the contributions from you and the rest of our brotherhood. The Board is committed to stewarding your gifts to assist as many brothers as possible. Sinfonia will make a difference in the world of music so long as you join us in our efforts. I thank you all for everything you have done, and continue to do to support our endeavors.

Fraternally,

Derek J. Danilson President, Sinfonia Educational Foundation

Honoring Our Brother

SEF Annual Report 2012-2013 1

or the brothers of the Kappa Sigma chapter, the memory of Christopher Patterson, Kappa Sigma (Valparaiso) ’10 is something they never hope to forget. When Chris arrived on the Valparaiso University campus he quickly made positive

impressions with everyone he met including the brothers of the Kappa Sigma chapter. After leaving campus for a semester to attend basic training, he was initiated into the U.S. Army in October of 2010. A little more than a year later, Chris’s National Guard unit was called to active duty in Afghanistan where he was killed in action on January 6, 2012.

To honor his memory and the impact Chris had on their lives, the chapter wanted to do something that could embody those passions that lived so strong in Chris during his life. At the 2012 National Convention of the Fraternity, Chris’s parents were present to launch a new initiative started by their son prior to his death. He had been designing a Challenge Coin to be given to members of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia who were serving or had served in any of the U.S. Armed Forces. As part of their presentation, the Pattersons’ played a video that encapsulated the life of their son and our brother. The strong emotional response by those in attendance led the brothers of the Kappa Sigma chapter to want to endow a scholarship in his name to ensure that Chris’ work and passion for music could live on through the recipients.

During the past academic year, the chapter conducted three events to begin the work of endowing the scholarship. First, a gala dance, co-sponsored by the Valparaiso University Ballroom Dance Team, gave students the opportunity to learn two new dances, followed by an evening of dancing. The second event was called Swoon Tunes which featured chapter members singing small song snippets to people around Valentines Day in exchange for donations.

These events were the first focused fund raising events the chapter had undertaken in a several years and were used to help plan and promote the first Christopher Patterson Memorial Music Festival.

In late April the chapter produced the four-hour music festival at the downtown Valparaiso amphitheater. The festival brought university and local musicians together to sing and play for an evening filled with good music

and fond memories of our brother Chris.

Through these efforts the chapter raised in excess of $3500 in this first year of fund raising, making substantial progress toward their goal of endowing a scholarship in Chris’s name. Plans are already in development for a new round of fundraisers and the Second Annual Christopher Patterson Music Festival to continue to honor the life of one who was taken too soon.

“The festival brought university and local musicians together to sing and play for an evening filled with good music and fond memories of our brother Chris.”

One of the primary vehicles the Sinfonia Educational Foundation

employs to enrich the lives of collegiate Sinfonians is its

scholarship program. In the past year the SEF has awarded $12,000

in scholarships, and the demand by collegiate members continues to increase. The impacts of these

scholarships are wide and varied, but always appreciated beyond words. A few of our recipients

have let us know how important their receipt of their scholarship

will be for them to continue their educational endeavors.

$5,000 SEF Scholarship Adam J. Strong, Sigma Epsilon (Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. Fort Wayne) ’12“As a charter member of the Sigma Epsilon chapter, it is been my unexpected privilege to take an active role in a starting chapter. In this process, I have come to be very grateful for all the help that I have received as an individual and as a member of a larger whole. From our big brother chapter at Ball State University to the national fraternity, I have received support and brotherhood that I never expected would be possible. It is furthermore my most sincere honor to be a recipient of further support from the Sinfonia Educational Foundation. This scholarship will not only help me immensely in my individual endeavors, but it will also help me to be the best member and leader that I can be. I would like to thank the SEF for their continuous support of not only myself, but also my chapter, the fraternity as a whole, and the common good of music in America.”

$2,500 SEF Scholarship John W. Fleming, Beta Iota (Albion) ’11“Like many, if not all Sinfonians, my time as a collegiate brother of the Beta Iota chapter (Albion College) evokes incredibly strong memories. While recovering from life-threatening surgery, spending time with, indeed simply being in the presence of, my brothers sustained me. In much the same way, the support that I have received over the past two years from the SEF has been overwhelming. Not only has its support helped keep me at my alma mater, it has allowed me to be a part of the chapter that I love.”

$1,000 Christopher Patterson Scholarship Frank Kaufhold, Iota (Northwestern) ’11“Sinfonia has opened so many doors for me and given me an opportunity to give back to the community that I love. From events held on Northwestern’s campus to Mills Music Missions across the area, this scholarship allows me to spend my time worrying about the success of these events as opposed to my personal finances. I can better focus on the positive experiences of brothers and members of the community as a result of the generosity of the Sinfonia Educational Foundation.”

$1,000 SEF Scholarship Kevin P. Lenker, Lambda Phi (Mississippi State) ’11“When asked about our fraternity, there are many instances and examples that show how the Sinfonia enriches a man spiritually, mentally, and even physically. Through the generosity of donors and staff of the Sinfonia Education Foundation, I can now proudly say that I’ve profited financially from joining this great brotherhood. This award releases those long held financial burdens that have plagued both myself and my parents and will enable me to continue to attend local, provincial, and national events. I am so thrilled to be bringing this award back to my chapter and province and using my success as a way to motivate others to uplift themselves and their fellow man through the Sinfonia. Not just as a future music educator but also as a current collegiate, I will always endeavor to find my place among men and use music and true brotherhood as my guiding tools to accomplish every goal that I set.”

s a part of its mission to enrich lives and advance music, the Sinfonia Educational Foundation (SEF) is pleased to announce its support of The MusicianShip. The MusicianShip is a charitable non-profit organization that facilitates music lessons, experiences and opportunities for primarily

at-risk youth, as they benefit most from positive outreach and music scholarship preparation. This $5,000 award represents the largest individual grant the SEF has ever given to a single institution.

This relationship with The MusicianShip has been in the works for several months. It began when President Derek Danilson had the opportunity to see a presentation about The MusicianShip’s programs at Province 30’s workshop in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Conversations continued over the next few months, culminating in a presentation at the Board of Trustees meeting in July. “We’ve been looking for an organization to partner with that can have a major impact on the world of music, both now and in the future,” said Danilson. “The Fraternity and Foundation have had multiple conversations about this. Children need to have the opportunity to experience what music has to offer, but with decreasing budgets, schools everywhere are cutting music programs. The MusicianShip has stepped in to fill that void and we are glad to be able to support their efforts.”

Begun in the Washington DC area, The Musician-Ship has been approved by the DC Public Schools as an official After-School service provider. This designation allows them to deliver free music

instruction to students who may not otherwise have such opportunities. Instructors are comprised of accomplished musicians and music educators who serve as positive role models for children. Another unique aspect of The MusicianShip is that students benefit from sessions led by nationally and internationally recognized performers. As this program grows, there could be opportunities for Sinfonians to participate as volunteer instructors. The Board is thrilled to reach out to support an organization whose mission mirrors our own.

A few of us had a chance to see this group in action at their summer showcase last month. We were able to experience how The MusicianShip enriches each of these children’s lives as they performed on stage, many of them for the first time. There was such a variety of music—voice, piano, brass ensembles, solo performances, a drumline, and even some poetry. We also heard stories from some of the students about how The MusicianShip has become an integral part of their lives by providing them with a positive environment that they might not otherwise experience outside of this program. There is real potential here. The goal is to expand this program from Washington, DC to other communities. “We are so thrilled to be the recipient of this SEF grant,” said Jeffery Tribble Jr., Executive Director of The MusicianShip. “The MusicianShip endeavors to change lives with music, not only in Washington DC, but all over the country. The SEF’s generous show of support brings us one huge step closer to that goal. The MusicianShip team is looking forward to working with the SEF for many years to come.”

ver the course of the past thirty years, summer leadership programs—formerly known as Leadership One and Leadership Conclave and more recently incarnated as Leadership Institute—have brought

Sinfonians together for motivation, inspiration, and brotherhood. Participants leave Evansville ready to make a difference in advancing brotherhood within their chapters and provinces, advancing music in their communities, and making a difference on their respective campuses. The vision of Leadership Institute is to develop leadership, and inspire and motivate members of our brotherhood through educational and musical experiences in a meaningful and enriching fraternal environment.A highlight of this year’s Institute, held on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, was the initiation of Pulitzer Prize winning composer

Michael Colgrass S as a member of the Fraternity’s national honorary Alpha Alpha Chapter—joining the ranks of other American music greats such as Van Cliburn, William Dawson, Peter Dykema, and Howard Hanson. A special presenter at this year’s Institute was Captain Winston Scott S, Epsilon Iota ’70, former NASA astronaut who currently serves as Dean of the College of Aeronautics at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. In addition to hearing presentations by National President John Mongiovi, Upsilon Psi ’94 and Vice-President Mark Lichtenberg, Delta Nu ’93, attendees also had the opportunity to hear from former former National President Richard A. Crosby, Eta-Omicron ’75, Interim Executive Director Edward A. Klint, Alpha Xi ’78, former National Vice-President Brian A. Stratton S, Delta Omega ’79, Alpha Alpha ’10. During their collegiate years, these three brothers actively advocated for enhanced collegiate engagement at the national level, and their example and commitment continue to

inspire and encourage young Sinfonians today.

The Sinfonia Educational Foundation is proud to help make Leadership Institute a success. This year, the Foundation provided $2500 in travel grants to over 90% of the participants. In addition, the SEF underwrote a portion of the accommodations for the more than 40 brothers who participated in the Men of Song chorus. By supporting events such as Leadership Institute, alumni can help ensure the continued development of leadership among the next generations of Sinfonians.

he brothers of the Alpha Rho Chapter at the University of North Carolina have raised nearly $5,000 for the Alpha Rho Chapter Fund. This achievement was the work of many brothers within the chapter, but was raised at just a single event.

“We threw a massively successful Battle of the Bands at a local bar in Chapel Hill called ‘He’s Not Here,’” says EJ Harrison, Alpha Rho 2011. “We got Sweetwater Brewing Company and Sam Ash music stores to sponsor the event. Sweetwater donated

$500 of the $4,712 total. And Sam Ash kindly provided our chapter with $325 worth of gift cards, which we used to help bring in the best bands in the area. A $250 gift card and a concert booking at ‘He’s Not Here’ was offered to the first place band, a $50 gift card to the second place band, and a $25 gift card to the third place band.” Outside of these donations, the majority of the money came from the cover charge for the event.

Alpha Rho will be using this money to help further our Object, particularly in music. “We plan on funding a scholarship that will be offered through the UNC Music Department,” says Harrison, “as well as commissioning a faculty composer to write a piece of music, to be played at our American Music Recital in 2014. The scholarship will be titled the Phi Mu Alpha Advancing Music in America Scholarship, and will pay for a Freshman music major’s first year of lessons, which costs $800 for two semesters.” Harrison said the chapter plans on holding similar events each semester, and that they hope to expand on the scholarships the chapter offers.

We’d like to congratulate the Alpha Rho Chapter on their dedication to our ide-als, and their success in their fundraising efforts. We hope more chapters are able to similarly utilize the SEF’s Chapter Fund Program, and that strong chapters like Alpha Rho are able to continue to advance Music in America and help young musicians through their efforts.
