Volunteering America - go the extra mile

DanCilickman S. Agriculture Secretary
Recently, America's living Presidents joined with business, charity, political and religious leaders, and other public-spirited citizens to talk about America's future.
It is a bright future. W e have a robust national economy and record unemployment. American- style democracy is flourishing around the world. Yet problems still persist, whether it's poverty , lack o f opportunity, threats to our natural resources or the weather.
H ow we unite to address these problems w ill say a lot about Am erica's prospects in the 21st century. I think there’s an important lesson for all o f us in the Midwest floods.
People across the country were moved by the images o f Dakotans and Minnesotans working side by side to try and shield their communities from a rising Red River. A close look at the neighbors passing sandbags from one person to the next rev ealed students, business people, retirees, even I S I ) . \
employees.During a time o f crisis, everyone had just one
title: volunteer. B y day. our I JS D A employees took part in the federal disaster response - getting help to farmers, ranchers and rural residents. By- night and on the weekends, many o f those same people could be found at the localised Cross shelter or the Salvation Army. \
For them, good citizenship didn't simply mean doing good work. It meant going the extra mile to get the job done and help communities in crisis.
W hile most Americans won't experience a natural disaster that quickly unites large numbers o f people, there are ominou^stormclouds - especially over our young people - that call on every American to serve.

UNICO continues to “raise awareness”
Whether it's teaching a child to read, helping get food to hungry families, or mentoring a teenager at risk o f crime or drugs, you can make a difference.
Many o f us are no strangers to volunteerism.M y personal passion is food rescue. This is where volunteers go to a restaurant, cafeteria, grocery store, you name it. and literally rescue
leftover food that would otherwise go to waste. W e take it to a soup kitchen or food bank that gets the food to hungry families who need it a whole lot more than a dumpster does.
V irtually everywhere I go, I take time out for food rescue and to encourage others to lend a hand against hunger. No one is too busy to give back to their community.Find the time and you w ill be
rewarded in ways money simply can’t buy. Each time 1 do food rescue, I come aw ay less con- \ inced that those who are fed benefit more than those who volunteer, lt feels good to do good.
It is no coincidence that the Presidents’ Summit oil America's Future took place in Philadelphia, the City o f Brotherly I ove. That's where our founding fathers signed the Declaration o f Independence. lt is time for a new American revolution - one that redefines good citizenship as not just paying taxes and obeying laws, but making a personal commitment to ensuring that the Am erican Dream is alive and available to all who are willing to work for it.
This revolution won't take place by government fiat. It is a revolution that must catch fire in the hearts and minds o f every American. I f it does, we will .ill enjoy an America in the next century that is every inch the ideals it was founded on more th;ui two centuries ago.
