“EVERY CHILD MATTERS”
LENTEN PRAYER God, heavenly Father,
look upon me and hear my prayer during this holy Season of Lent. By the good works You inspire, help me to discipline my body and to be renewed in
spirit.
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to Week 6. The day has finally dawned, our Secondary building project has commenced with the demolition of 27 Brisbane Street. Once the block has been cleared and the Tender Process has been completed, the new buildings should start within the next month. The first half of the house will be placed on the flatbed tomorrow and will be moved at 6am on Friday morning followed shortly afterwards by the second half.
We are already at the half-way mark of the term and the children are beginning to tire easily. A good remedy for this is to endeavour to make sure that they are getting enough sleep and are eating healthy food. A “no event” weekend once in a while, is also a good way of letting them recharge their batteries. Many children arrive at school exhausted on Monday mornings, trying to recover from hectic activity filled weekends.
SRIP Week This week sees the SRIP interviews taking place. The panel of four, Mr Jim Midgley (Director of Teaching and Learning, Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office), Mr John Coman (Senior Education Leader), Mr Norman Hunter (Education Consultant, Brisbane) and Mrs Terry Carter (Education Officer TCSO) completed 72 interviews on Tuesday and today. The main two questions asked were, “What is St Mary’s School doing well?” and “What could the school do better?”
The panel will report back to the staff of St Mary’s on Thursday afternoon and will complete a full report in the next two weeks, which will be placed onto our school website for parents.

Quote of the Week
“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning.”
Carol Dweck Best wishes for the week ahead. Brett Pollard Principal
I was lucky enough to spend the last week with our secondary school students at Noosa North Shore learning in, about and through outdoor education and environment inspired activities.
As a passionate advocate of outdoor education and engaging young people in opportunities that create wonder, belief and value in the natural world in which we live, the chance to see young people on camp is fulfilling in itself! Outdoor education is about placing people in controlled environments with perceived risk that force them to rise to a challenge. Whether it is heights, proximity to others, darkness, water, balance, problem solving, public performance or a physically demanding or skill-based activity, it is always pleasing to see the way in which students demonstrate grit, determination, courage and finally elation upon overcoming challenges. The reliance on others and themselves to achieve great things is a great outcome from any camp experience and something we saw constantly in the last week. It was in fact the way in which students took ownership of the camp and each activity that made the camp such a successful experience. This week we are focusing on this very notion of ownership and responsibility across the school.
Our Positive Behaviour for the week is Taking Responsibility for Learning and Choices. Across different year levels this will look slightly different, however the central premise is the same. When students choose to ‘own’ their education, they place themselves in the drivers seat and are able to make the most of every opportunity that they are offered. Does this mean they will always achieve success? Definitely not! What it does mean is that they will always be learning. As Thomas Edison famously said “I haven’t failed, I have found 10,000 ways that don’t work’.
In the classroom this will be evident when students settle straight to work, ask questions to clarify understanding, answer questions honestly and openly, seek feedback and engage meaningfully in class and small group discussions. At home this will be most obvious when homework is completed, when they talk about what they are learning, ask parents questions and share newly learnt skills with the family. To choose to engage in their own learning is to choose to be successful, engaged and empowered in their learning.
P-2 Swimming Carnival – Friday 15 March 9.00am to 11.00am The P-2 Swimming Carnival is fast approaching and promises to be a fantastic morning of fun, participation and spirit for the youngest students in our school. Students are to be dropped to the pool at 8.50am for a 9.00am start wearing their swimmers together with swim shirts, their bag, lunch and drink bottle. Parent volunteers (in and out of the pool) will be required to assist in facilitating this event. If you are able to assist, please email Dave Capra [email protected] .

Sacramental Program
Is your child interested in furthering their faith development? I am seeking names of any student wishing to
make their Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Communion this year. Please email me
([email protected]) if your child would be interested. Please note, this is a simple process and
one in which you will be very supported in.
HELP!
In honoring the special relationship between the Parish and School, the Parish are seeking volunteers to assist
on their Liturgy Committee. This committee is designed to assist in delivering meaningful liturgies in our Church.
If you have any spare time, we would ask that you consider assisting this committee. This may be as simple as
helping to hang fabric or helping hang crosses for the Stations of the Cross service. If you can assist in any way
(big or small), can you please send me an email ([email protected]).
Have a great week,
Karra Suhr

Library Corner
All classes have borrowed this week and for Year 1 to 5 are due back Friday
15th March (Yr 6 are tracking the books themselves for high school readiness).
Prep books are due this Friday as they borrow weekly.
We are running a junior and senior challenge for the year and you can find
these at the end of Links to print out to encourage reading in your home. It is
quite enjoyable to find books together or talk about what books your child
might borrow.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail the library staff at:
Have a great week!
BOOKCLUB
The 2nd Issue of Book Club goes home this week with orders due back Friday 15th March by 3pm please. Thanks all!

Extension and Enrichment Math
Year 5L commenced their math differentiation sessions this week. Students participated in pretesting, data was analysed and like-minded ability groups were formed. The mathematical material was coordinated to the appropriate level of understanding for each group, whilst also ensuring the content remained challenging. Mrs Lindores and I remained with two groups to ensure the explicit teaching of concepts in a kinaesthetic and supportive manner.
In our school newsletter last week I outlined our clear school multiplication fact achievement benchmarks for our Year 2,3,4 students:
By the end of Year 2
By the end of Year 3
By the end of Year 4
2x
5x
10x
3x
4x
9x
11x
6x
7x
8x
12x
From discussions within the community over the last two weeks, I must say
there have been quite a few large statements from teachers and parents alike concerning their
prowess at recalling number facts. I’ve heard the phrase ‘I was the class/school/country times table champion’ more than 10 times from at least 5 individuals (Mrs Petrie is quite proud of her primary school title).
Far be it for me to disregard such achievements and to try to knock Mrs Petrie from her primary school title, however, the time may have come to settle this like the respectful, yet competitive students, parents and teachers that we are.
Students, parents and teachers will go toe to toe in what could only be described as a rapid fire cognitive imprinting display of glory at our school Multiplication Fact Championships 2019.
Good luck to all nominations.

Our biggest job for the year is always Project Compassion. It is the weeks during Lent where we raise awareness and money for those less fortunate than ourselves.
This year with our very own community in a time of need because of the drought, we have decided to only do 2 events for Project Compassion.
We will have the St Patricks Green Day where you bring in as many silver coins as you can and our St Mary’s Mud Warrior obstacle course!
We are looking for some donations to help with our obstacle course: • Slack line / ropes (we will return these) • Hay bales • Black plastic (for the mud and for the water slip n slide) • Sensory things (slime ingredients, flour, water beads)
• Sand bags (potato sacks) • Dirt • Borrow star pickets • Helpers to set up
If you are willing to donate something or help us to set up, could you please email Mrs White
