C EMEJOR AT NESP TT TSeed IP Associates is a growing intellectual property law rm. They are evolving from a large traditional rm and desire a refreshing contemporary environment which also maintains some traditional elements. While Seed IP attorneys from the larger rm are transitioning to the new location, they also hope to attract recent graduates with a fresh outlook. Seed IP has chosen the 818 Stewart Building in the heart of downtown Seattle for their new location and will occupy a portion (4,000 to 6,000 square feet) of the thirteenth oor with an attached balcony.
The dynamic of this emerging law rm provided an interesting design challenge. The design of Seed IP’s new space was based on three key concepts: collaboration, contrast and approachability. The design combines traditional elements with a bright and edgy impression. The curvilinear walls of the large conference and lunch rooms inspire movement throughout the space and create an atypical experience for clients and employees.
Teaming areas were designed to feel private with the use of lush rugs and drywall ceilings; however, they were left open to encourage spontaneous collaboration. The design focuses on function and resourcefulness: why should walls be simply structural necessities? Wherever the space plan allowed, walls were designed to challenge their standard connotation; whether it be marker board or tackable walls, they are meant to inspire productivity and creativity.
Soft, vibrant, rough, polished, unrened, dened, traditional, contemporary. These themes were the driving force in merging two seemingly diverse design styles. Soft carpet and supple leather partner with vibrant orange resin panels, and blue tackable walls. Rough concrete oors and ceilings complemented by rich, dark wood and etched stone. Unrened ceilings with exposed piping give way to dened drywall areas creating simultaneous sensations of openness and privacy.
Because this rm has traditional roots it was important the transitioning attorneys maintain a sense of comfort in a very modern environ-ment. However, the sti and unwelcoming sense which often accompanies private oces needed to be challenged. The use of sliding doors provides oces with the necessary privacy required for clients but also oers a greater sense of accessibility and openness. A resin panel system allows natural light to transfer from the external windows throughout the space. The resin also feels less restricting and adds to the feeling of open partnership with co-workers and superiors.
