The grain of the future and legacy of
NAZARENO STRAMPELLI
SEED CATALOG AUTUMN 2016
TTTh
NN
The 2016 Agroservice Catalogue is dedicated in homage to our illustrious
countryman Nazareno Strampelli, geneticist, agronomist, Italian senator
and forerunner of the so-called “green revolution”,
as this year marks the 150th anniversary of his birth. His studies,
discoveries, insights and experiments have assured him an honourable
place in history and even today he remains a scientific point of reference
in the field of plant genetic improvement.
Agroservice Spa, is a leading company at the forefront
of the seed industry. For many years, it has been operating also
at international levels with applied research methods. In the wake of this
distinguished scientist, we take inspiration from his teachings in
highlighting the importance of investing more and more in research,
development, testing and the multiplication of seeds for agriculture,
in order to introduce continuous innovation in the grown varieties
and to support, with professionalism and certified experience,
the farming community and it needs.
The very title of this catalogue, recalling the Accademia Georgica
of Treia Conference of 26th October 2013, also represents
an acknowledgment to prof. Norberto Pogna, plant geneticist
and esteemed collaborator of Agroservice Spa, sadly recently deceased.
His contribution to study and research will remain as a precious legacy
for the company’s future.

Agroservice S.p.A. is an Italian company whose shareholder base is mostly represented by farmers. It has been engaged for many years in seed related activities, applying great efforts in research, deve-lopment, testing, multiplication and distribution, in Italy and abroad. Research activities play an important role in the context of seed because it drives innovation. Agroservice, aware of the importance of this commitment, exploits the know-how fostered by the most advanced international centres for public and private research. Our seed production is distributed under the Isea brand.
OUR VISION
• We hold that the development of agriculture commands primary importance within the economy, for the benefit of the community, the environment and the territory.
• We consider product quality and sustainability to be the cornerstones of our research.• We value the close and continuous relationship with the farmer as an essential element for the
improvement of the performance of our products, it ensures that we support our customers with a constant flow of know-how and innovation.
OUR MISSION
• We undertake continuous research for genetic improvement in order to obtain seed varieties with high performance, productivity and quality.
• We divulge innovation and technical support resulting from the professionalism of our experts. • We offer innovative solutions in response to market demands.• We are constantly expanding the range of proposed varieties in order to constantly offer new op-
portunities to farmers.• We champion originality and bring it to the market with the multitude of varieties derived specifi-
cally from our own research.• We use “applied” research methods - taking the scientific knowledge derived from basic research
and applying it to innovation.
Agroservice uses transparent bags for grain seed packaging so that the quality of the product is also visible from the outside.
Agroservice makes available to its customers a modern computer system, developed the HORTA Company (a spin-off from the Università Cattolica Sacro Cuore), which assists choices and strategies addressing the most appropriate cultivation techniques for the achievement of high production, excellent quality, environmental sustainability and public health.
Quality that can be seen...The care and attention required to achieve good quality seed starts with cultivation on the land. With spe-cific cultivation contracts, Agroservice selects specialised farms which are entrusted with the task of seed reproduction. The cultivation techniques employed and the professionalism of our producers in the planting and harvesting phases, ensure that the seed is healthy, excluding the possibility of contamination. Crops are constantly checked and certified in the field. In the processing facility, a technologically advanced selection process takes place; the seeds are encapsulated in a protective film and packaged to ensure prolonged quality.
...Get the most from Isea seed The choice of variety combined with the most appropriate cultivation techniques facilitate the attainmentof goals in economic, environmental and social SUSTAINABILITY in agriculture (ie. maximum production with minimum cost and minimum environmental impact).
1. Identifying the correct quantity of seed
In the site www.agroservicespa.it click on InfoSOWING and, for varieties of common and durum wheat, for the password enter the batch number of the seed you have purchased. Informa-tion will be displayed indicating the germination capacity and the weight of 1,000 seeds of the specific batch of seed and essential elements for determining the correct seed application rate. This will generate suggestions and information to assist: • Optimisation of the number of ears per square meter based on the varietal characteristics and pre-
vailing seeding conditions (age, type of soil, the seed bed conditions, etc.);• Hindering the phenomenon of ‘lodging’ through a more balanced seeding density;• Making the plant less susceptible to fungal diseases.
2. Support for improved growing techniques
The portal www.agroservicespa.it also provides the web assistance service grano.net as a useful support tool for achieving the best cultivation technique. This system was developed by the HOR-TA SRL Company, a spin off from the University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Piacenza. Based on the agronomic and environmental conditions of each land area, it provides the User useful information on fertilisers (potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen), chemical weed control, anti-fungal and pesticide treatments, the meteorological situation on the registration of all farming operations (in the interest of trace-ability) and the preparation of the Plant Protection Logbook as recommended in Directive 128/2009.

Nazareno Strampelli…the “forerunner of the elected seeds”
Strampelli and his wife Carlotta Parisani
DURUM WHEAT
He was born on May 29th, 1866 in Crispiero of Castelraimondo (MC), the son of Francesco Strampelli and Luigia Ottaviani. In 1891 he graduated in Agriculture at the University of Pisa and he founded in Crispiero the agricultural-workers’ mutual help asso-ciation. He eventually started to work as an assistant professor of Chemistry and at the Physics Cabinet of the University of Ca-merino and he became part of the local Agrarian Committee. In 1900 he started his first wheat hybridization experiments and he grasped the potentialities of the hybridization methods for the genetic improvement of the variety. in 1903 he moved to Rieti as the Director of the itinerant Chair of wheat growing and there he laid the foundations to start immediately a great scientific work aimed at the genetic improvement of wheat. The itinerant Chair was then changed into Experimental station of wheat growing.
In 1914 he introduced the first hybrid wheat resistant both to rust and to lodging: the so-called “Carlotta Strampelli” devoted to his wife, Carlotta Parisani, his priceless assistant and researcher. In 1918 he won the Santoro award, a prestigious award by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.Carlotta wheat became famous both in Italy and abroad. He also had the smart intuition of founding in Rome in 1919 the national Institute of genetics for wheat growing. In 1925 he was involved in the so-called historical “battle for grain” launched by the fascist regime with the task of the national self-sufficiency in the wheat production: the “Strampelli wheat” became the protagonists. After the victory of this battle, Strampelli was appointed Sena-tor of the Kingdom due to his high scientific merits. In 1933 the national production of wheat exceeds for the first time eighty million quintals, therefore the Fascist regime officially pays him the “national honours”.He died in Rome on January 23rd, 1942.

BREAD WHEAT
In 1911 the Ministry of Agriculture, by means of a loan of the Deposits and Loans granted Strampelli an advance equal to one hundred and fifty thousand Liras (of the old Liras) to buy some soils for the experiments in Rieti (Campomoro), Foggia and Leonessa. Strampelli started a network of varietal fields on them to carry out the soil tests with wheat hybrids.
…Strampelli’s curiosity towards the Rieti original wheat was so great he wrote to the Ministry of Agriculture, in the his early years of work in that area:
“Excellency, the good qualities of the Rieti seed wheat are exclusively due to the special weather conditions and to this soil whose values men have never tried to improve, while by means of an accurate physiologic an methodical selection one could get to make the Rieti wheat abso-lutely the best seed wheat in the whole national wheat growing field”.
Nevertheless Strampelli’s objectives were wider…. he would have turned the valley of Rieti in his great research laboratory, devoted to leave an important track in the world’s wheat growing field.
“...(omitted) I would like to talk about my genetic works of Rieti, whose goal is the research of the cereal variety answering to the needs of the new cultivation conditions in the middle and northern sections of Italy. Through these works in Rieti I have created some hundreds new wheat among which there are several tens that are extremely interesting...”(from the letter dated in 1919 addressed to Carlo Schanzer’s brother, at that time Treasury of the government by Nitti).

BARLEYThe scientific work andthe “Strampelli wheat”…but the true laboratory by Nazareno Strampelli was the soil. He used to spend the whole day, especially along the sowing and the harvesting time, in his experimental fields checking the works, to get back to Campomoro in the evening to do the paperwork and check the results through the technical and scientific equipment available.
“…(omitted) We are getting into the agronomic period or the comparative one, to determine the value of the new varieties in the big cultivations, and it’s no longer possible to be happy with working on soils where we are just guests(even though of men of great intellect and enormous generosity). Therefore we need the means that could enable the choice of the soils that suit our goal the most and ensure our stability there”. (from the report to the Ministry of Agriculture – 1910)
“…(omitted) The wheat called Carlotta Strampelli in the middle and northern sections of Italy has been able to exceed all the other varieties… I can truly state that by using the abundant genetic material I have available, I could in a very short time give to any district in Italy the wheat that suits the area the most” (from the letter dated in 1919 addressed to Carlo Schanzer’s brother, at that time Treasury of the government by Nitti).

CEREAL MINORS
The “Strampelli method” andthe founding of the National Institute of Genetics for Cereal Cultivation“The hybridization technique is quite easy to implement, also for wheat - it is little more than an excercise in patience; I will, in any case, expose the method I followed, so that you can judge the way I have worked”. (excerpt from Strampelli’s original notes, found after his death among his manuscripts).
Strampelli performed 800 cross-fertilisations and developed more than one million newgenotypes for common wheat and durum wheat, experimenting with new varieties through:• the worldwide collection of germplasm• cross-breeding and selection• multiplication in purity• multi-local varietal trials
The model for varietal trials developed by Strampelli is still valid and applied worldwide to-day. He defined a method based on cross-breeding and selection. The goals for the genetic improvement of wheat were and remain: high production potential, stability of production and technological quality.
He was responsible for the founding of the National Institute of Genetics, which he had conceived entirely on his own, without ever having claimed credit for its achievements. He never expected any financial consideration for his efforts: “…because for me it is sufficient that I can enjoy the immense satisfaction of rendering a great service to my country”.There is ample evidence of these attitudes in a series of handwritten notes which, in fact, include the hypothesis of establishing a plant genetics institute.“The war has shown us that agriculture is the primary source of national wealth (...) Little, so very little has been done. Many hopes, many promises, many wonderful ideas. But these hopes, these promises, will take shape soon (...)”.

HAMMURABIRegistration year > 2016
This is a completely new variety among einkorn wheats, from the point of view of genetics, of agronomy and of technology, owing to the following features:- Naked kernels;- Heavy weight of the nude seed;- Early earing and maturation. The feature “nakedness of seed” is very important in agronomy and technology, as it al-lows immediate use of the harvest, in order to the first industrial transformation (grinding) without the necessity of divesting the kernels. This allows obvious advantages as far as costs and eventual losses caused by breakage are concerned. This last aspect is of parti-cular importance considering the extreme softness of the grain of Triticum monococcum.

VEGETABLES SEEDS
In 1932, in response to those who were complaining that he did not pu-blish enough of his work, he wrote:
“Had I wanted to publish all that emerged as interesting - even if only from a theoretical point of view - in the course of my work and my ex-periences, concerning all the topics and issues I studied, I would have certainly accumulated a vast amount of literature, even quite intere-sting material, I dare say... (omitted). The man who every day expands his dominion over all that surrounds him is not the master of his time, the great gentleman who puts everything in place. And time was never enough for me for the so many things that I would actually have liked to have seen completed (omitted).
“My publications, those I really care about, are my grains - it does not matter that they do not carrymy name, but it is they thatrepresent the legacy of my modest efforts, undertaken in the interestof grain development for my country.”

Travels abroad andthe “Battle for Wheat”
FORAGE LEGUMES
“...A prevalent and precise task was before me, and it was to absorb me entirely: to pursue and achieve goals and practical results of immediate benefit for my country; which required and requires no academies of printed paper, not the vain efforts in inconclusive fruitless word games; but facts and works bearing a contribution to welfare and human progress, and therefore of tangible material benefit to the economy of the Nation”.
In his travels abroad, mainly concentrated in Argentina, his goal was to gain economic concessions for the importation of wheat.
The “Battle for Wheat” was a campaign launched by Benito Mussolini in 1925 to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat, which the country was then importing at the rate of 25 million tonnes, for a total consumption of 75 million tons.Strampelli was invited to the Permanent Wheat Committee chai-red by Mussolini himself. The Committee engaged in the selection of seeds, fertilisers, technical improvement and pricing policy.
As a result of this work, in 1931 production almost fully meet domestic wheat demand (81 million tons), establishing a world record achievement.

The wheat called Carlotta together with Gregorio Mendel was introduced to the agrarian novelties trade fair in 1914.It was Strampelli’s access key in the most respected panorama of Italian agrarian research, the extent that he was asked to report also at the Accademia dei Lincei, which awarded him of the San-toro award in 1919 for the amount of ten thousand liras. Also the Institut International d’Agricolture together with the whole Italian agrarian world, wanted to pay tribute to Strampelli and they did it under the initiative by Baron De Bildt, correspondent from Sweden, a country which had highly invested on the studies concerning hybridization, and the French Luis-Dop, who, during the meeting of the permanent committee of the Institut International held on 29th February 1919, proposed to congratulate officially on Strampelli for the award received by the Accademia dei Lincei.
In December 1933 Strampelli was awarded the charge of Senator with the highest tribute paid to him first in Rome and eventually in Rieti, where he was also awarded the honorary citizenship. Strampelli at the top of his fame, continued to be committed in the research of new types of wheat.
In 1933 he was bestowed the national honours: in that occasion all the Italian agricultural world joined in Rome to pay homage to Nazareno Strampelli.
The success
His wheat will cover the whole Italian peninsula, even after his death. His disciples and many other Italian geneticists have conti-nued to use the result of his huge scientific work to get to further progresses all through the 20th century and up to now.His scientific work, his commitment, his passion are and will be a positive message and an exhortation for the future generations to do one’s best by means of studying and commitment, for the wellness of the whole community.
Nazareno Strampelli… an extraordinary scientific experience that leaves and will leave indelible marks also in the future…
The moral willby Nazareno Strampelli
“Always raise through
the nobility of the soundest
feelings and through
the wise actions constantly
active and rich in wellness
for your families,
your homeland and
the whole humanity.”
