There are several online bipolar tests designed for people to get an idea if they may, in fact, have bipolar disorder. These tests, however, should never be a substitute for going to see the doctor and being examined thoroughly. Tests for bipolar include creating mood charts and answering questionnaires, along with a physical exam. Because it is crucial that a person with bipolar disorder gets treated, a doctor should be consulted before any treatment steps are taken.

At BPHope.com, they provide a community of people with bipolar disorder who welcome new members along with providing an organized place to find information surrounding bipolar disorder including how it affects work life, love life, school, motivation levels, etc. BPHope.com is the digital format of a hard copy magazine and both are equally as informative. Although they don’t offer specific tests for bipolar (because they recommend seeing your doctor), they provide a wealth of information to get you started.

Tests for bipolar disorder may reveal that the individual may notice that their mood and energy level shifts dramatically over the course of time. Sometimes, the person’s mood might be very low, and at other times, they notice that it is very high. Low phases are so low that the person sometimes can’t seem to get out of bed because they are so fatigued and have absolutely no motivation to work or see any of their friends. During a high energy level phase, however, the person may notice that they are very talkative (excessively), almost or to the point of being unintelligible to others. They are more outgoing, feel more productive and also highly sexual (recklessly, in fact).

An individual is given bipolar tests to not only determine if they have bipolar disorder, but also to rule out other possible conditions. First, a physical exam is conducted to help identify any underlying medical problems. Then, a psychological evaluation is done by a doctor or mental health care provider which includes speaking one on one with the provider, filling out questionnaires and also talking with family members and friends (with the individual’s permission). The individual is asked to keep a daily mood chart to identify patterns, and then the doctor matches up symptoms with the criteria for bipolar disorder.

The depression is easy to spot because it involves a lack of energy, lack of pleasure in normal activities, prolonged sadness, very low self-esteem and a marked inability to concentrate. The mania, however, makes the symptoms for bipolar hard to spot for some people as it can include exaggerated feelings of confidence, feeling highly productive (yet accomplishing little), racing thoughts and speech (nobody else can understand), sleeplessness without fatigue, risky behavior, etc.
