Volunteers neededSingleton Council is calling for passionate volunteer tutors to assist young people in Singleton. Singleton Youth Venue has hosted a free tutoring program over the past four years which has provided students with assistance in areas such as maths, English and science.

The program was previously maintained by Rio Tinto staff volunteers, but many of these people have re-located and fresh blood is needed.

The tutoring program takes place on Wednesdays at the Singleton Youth Venue between 4pm and 6pm.

Anyone interested in volunteering is invited to register by calling Reina Stalker at the Youth Venue on 02 6571 4687.

Region’s miners in training for rugby league knockout clashSerious training has begun for local coalminers preparing for the 2016 A-Plus Contracting Hunter Valley Mining Charity Rugby League Knockout Competition in support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.Organised by the Singleton Volunteer Support Group, 300 mining employees will make up the 16 teams who’ll represent their respective mines and compete in the day-long rugby league 10’s competition at Singleton’s Pirtek Park on October 8.

This year’s event will see teams divided into four pools with each playing a minimum of two games during the day. Based on collective points the teams placed first will advance through to the semi-finals and then onto the grand final.

2016 A-Plus Contracting Hunter Valley Mining Charity Rugby League Knockout Competition teams: Ashton Wombats, Austar Swamp Rats, Glendell Gladiators, Hunter Valley United Cobras, Liddell Lions, Maules Creek Maulers, Mt Thorley Warkworth Barbarians, Mt Thorley Warkworth Razorbacks, Mt Arthur Meerkats (A), Mt Arthur Meerkats (B), Mt Owen Muddogs, Ravensworth Rhinos, Rix’s Creek Rattlesnakes, Saxonvale Raiders, Wambo Wolves and the Werris Creek Wild Cats.

Last year the charity day raised $50,000 for the Rescue Helicopter with more than 1,000 spectators, family and friends expected to turn out for this year’s event. Off-field entertainment includes food stands, jumping castles, amusement rides and face painting.

The local business community has once again rallied with A-Plus Contracting, Pirtek, IEEP Engineered Products, Jennings Print, Workpac and Betts Bowers all major sponsors. More than 70 businesses have backed individual teams to help with their fundraising targets with Coal Services Mines Rescue (First Aid), Group 21 Rugby League Referees Association and Singleton’s Rotary and Lions clubs providing in-kind support and assistance on the day.

The Singleton Volunteer Support Group has worked hard for the past 19 years to help raise awareness and funds to make sure this vital community service stays in the air.

Glass Parade is now open to through traffic following the completion of rectification works.Rectification works began on Thursday 30 June and took less than four weeks to complete.

“A full-depth asphalt rectification method was used in order to ensure a longer pavement life and to minimise impact on the community during construction,” said Singleton Council’s Manager of Executive Projects, Gary Thompson.

“Council appreciates the community’s patience during these works and we are delighted to have the road fully opened and repaired.” Mr Thompson concluded.
