Greetings to our SUMC Members and Friends,
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, and those who mourn. Blessed are the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, and the merciful. Blessed are the pure in heart, and the peacemakers. Blessed even are the persecuted!" [Matthew 5:1-10] In my favorite Bible, the heading over this section is “Finding True Happiness”. At the heart of Jesus' preaching and teaching is the Sermon on the Mount—The Beatitudes are the beginning and the summary of an amazing sermon which fills three chapters of Matthew’s Gospel. They are a preview of what the Kingdom of God should look like within us. The key for unlocking the meaning of the Sermon on the Mount is simply this: Jesus is the personification of the beatitudes. Through his living example the Beatitudes open for us an understanding into his divine yet amazing human life. These virtues Jesus shares with us are a beautiful illustration of his life, but even more than that, what God desires for us to find in our own lives—“True Happiness”. To follow Jesus wholly is to become a person of the beatitudes. Jesus teaches his disciples and all of us that to live a life in union with him we must not only strive to avoid sin—but we must lead a new kind of life: One that is firmly rooted in the Kingdom of God. The Beatitudes teach us how to follow Christ in living as members of God’s eternal Kingdom. Poverty of spirit leads one to recognize that the greatest good available to humankind is to lead a life rooted in God. This is the virtue that motivates our focus toward the eternal. A mourning spirit helps to reorder our life according to what is most essential and lasting. It opens a person to the discovery of the promise that God accompanies us in all of life’s circumstances and challenges. A thirst for righteousness leads us to strive for authentic justice, the first principle of which is to give God the love and honor and glory due to him. It expands our vision towards care for others.

To be merciful is to live with a forgiving heart, even when we have been deeply wounded by someone else. It is the founda-tion in which we hope to find pardon from God, which is offered so abundantly and freely. To have a clean heart simplifies our lives and makes it possible to grasp a freedom which leads to a joyful embrace of God's will. Being at peace orders our life to be focused upon Christ’s gift of sacrifice on the Cross - the source of our true peace. Allow-ing the peace of Christ to reign in our heart makes it possible to truly live confidently as a child of God. Even persecution for the sake of Christ is presented as a blessing. So many people reviled the Lord, especially as he hung upon the Cross. When we share in this condition, we are especially reminded of the saving grace that flows from it. The Beatitudes open a path for each follower of Christ—A pathway to the Kingdom of God. I want to invite you to experience the Beatitudes of Jesus Christ as I continue a sermon series “The Master and His Message” in which we will study in depth, week by week, verse by verse this incredible work given as a gift to all the people of creation by the Preacher of all Preachers—Teacher of all Teachers. NEWS FROM MISSIONS
Collection for the Mission to Mexico with Faithworks Continues Through August
The next Faithworks mission to Mexico is September 5-7. It is a non-medical trip with the purpose being to deliver supplies and clean the clinic. There is a box in the narthex for items being requested for their trip. If you can help, please donate the following:
Small sample-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner, any size toothpaste, multi-vitamins of all kinds, diabetes test strips, and chapsticks
Kathy Roth from SUMC is planning to go, and there may still be space if others wish to go as
well. Please see the gray brochures in the narthex with details about this trip.
Sedona Community Supper:
We will be looking for volunteers to help prepare (3:00-5:00), serve (4:00-6:00), and clean up
after (6:00-7:00) on August 26th at St. Andrews Church in West Sedona. Please see Kathy
Roth if you are available to help.
This weekly dinner and fellowship is a wonderful opportunity to meet members of our Sedona
Community whom you might not otherwise get to know. Dinner is free to all who attend.
Jerome Food Bank Drive Update
“Thank you so much for the Sedona Methodist Church food drive donation!
There was over 126 pounds of food which is the equivalent of 105 meals. Thanks
for helping Verde Valley Neighborhood Food Project support those who feed the
hungry in our community! “ - Nicole Davis of Verde Valley Food Project
Don’t forget our food banks in the summer time! We have a food basket on the
2nd floor by the stairwell for collections of non-perishable food that go to the
Sedona Food Bank.

Welcome Back to Shirley Vrieling! Shirley and her
husband George were a big part of SUMC prior to
their moving to Prescott Valley. George passed
away in 2014 and Shirley now resides in Cotton-
wood. She has three children, 7 grandchildren,
and 6 great grandchildren. In the past, Shirley has
served in music, bible study, Sunday School and
Young Life. We are so happy she is back!
Sue & Bob Holiday moved in the area from
Chico, CA about a year ago. They are
retired - Bob was in metals and Sue in
Human Resources. They have two sons.
Bob likes to Golf and Hunt and Sue likes
reading and fishing. We are so happy they
are part of our family!

ANNA’s CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY Every Thursday at 9:45 a.m. This women’s group meets in the conference room. They will finish up the book of Isaiah on 7/11 then will take a break for the summer. They will resume on 9/5 with the book of Jeremiah.

Our July Kachina Point service had 18 attendees, with a good mix of “regulars” along with a number of “first-timers”. Marianna Waak conducted the service in July and the enthusiastic singing and participation in our discussion sessions reflected the personal level of contact that Marianna accomplished with her Patriotism theme and Civil War and WWII certificates.

HANDBELL WORKSHOPS WITH DIRECTOR BOB MARTIN!
Why do I ring handbells? Our unwritten mission statement is “To glorify God and to enhance our worship.” I asked your Bell Rock Ringers to write out their personal answers as to why they ring. I wanted to share some of those answers with you:
…because I was asked, but that is the truth. I don't think I would have joined SUMC's ringers had someone not invited me, saying I was needed. However, once I was in the ranks and had become part of the ringing fellowship, other reasons for why I ring became true:
.... because I became part of a greater whole, musically and socially
.... because I was having fun
.... because doing my part made the piece complete
.... because together we made something beautiful, we created art.
I love being a “RINGER” because bells are so expressive of joy and celebration. When we get it right the sound is incomparable. It is a great experience to be part of an ensemble.
To understand how the notes and phrases come together. To be part of a group of bell ringers that gives uplifting music to our church members.
...Even though I stopped playing in bands, I still have a desire to make music. In retirement, playing bells has given me the chance to make music.
...There is a satisfaction when all the bells come together successfully to make beautiful music that people enjoy. It makes me happy.
I prayed and God said to glorify Him. I was encouraged by Jane Shuman as more people were needed.
I love music. I wanted to learn a new way to provide music for worship. It’s fun and challenging.
...This was the first opportunity to learn bells. Besides making beautiful music, it’s the people here that allow me to stay. If it’s not enjoyable why do it?
I ring handbells because it is FUN! F=Friendly environment, all are welcome. U=Unnecessary to have any (prior) musi-cal training. N=Noteworthy leadership – Bob Martin is a wealth of knowledge of all things handbells.
Thank you ringers. You have come a long way and I am so proud and blessed to be your director.
Now that you have read this far, I ask you to prayerfully consider coming to our handbell workshops and
see if you would also enjoy ringing. The workshops are designed to see if you enjoy handbells and makes
no commitment on your part to join the Bell Rock Ringers. All are welcome. No prior music experience
needed. Just come and do your best. Classes are scheduled for Tuesday, August 20th and Thursday,
August 22nd. Each workshop will be 90 minutes long, starting at 10:00 am. This year you must register in
advance by calling (248 462-9093) or emailing Bob Martin ([email protected]).
Let’s make a joyful noise!

Our choir will return in September! We’d love for you to join us!
Now Let Us Sing! In just five short weeks, SUMC’s choral season begins! Have you made your plans to reserve Thursday nights for uplifting music, rejuvenating fellowship and sonorous choral singing? Regular rehearsals will begin on Thursday, September 5, 6:30 p.m. in the choir room and will be followed on Saturday, September 7, 9 a.m. with a singing/fellowship/feasting event. You will get a taste of many of the anthems the choir will work on this year AND a taste of some Alaskan salmon! You are sincerely invited to join the ranks of SUMC’s singing saints – your presence and participation would be most welcome.

through all generations” (Psalm 89:1)

COMMITTEE CORNER
Trustees: The slab foundation has been poured to the south of the
church in preparation of placing a storage shed next to the building.
Work is also being done on steps for a “short cut” on the walk to the
Fellowship Hall. Thank you Trustees!
The Missions Committee: This team continues to discuss ways to help our commu-
nity. Mark your calendar for the next Sedona Community Dinner on August 26th—
volunteers are needed. We also want to thank you for your participating in the food
collection for Jerome Food Bank. We continue our collection of items needed for the
FaithWorks’ trip to Mexico in September. (see page 3)
The Worship Committee: The Summer Special Music slots will continue
through September 1st. Our choir will return on September 8th with rehearsals
starting on September 5th and a special choir workshop on September 7th. (see
page 9). We also have two Handbell Workshops this month with our director Bob
Martin (see page 8) Watch for an important fundraiser from our Bell Choir
coming next month.
Look for opportunities to invite, pick up and bring someone to an event or
Sunday worship! We have the Men’s Breakfast on 8/3, Family Movie
Night on 8/9 and A New Emerson Theater’s Youth Performance 8/22

adult bible studies. Laurie Rathbun continues to work with the children on the Boom

Sedona Area Gap Asist Program. MONETARY AND ITEM
DONATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED. LOOK FOR THE
DONATION BIN IN THE NARTHEX WITH A LIST OF ITEMS
NEEDED. Monetary donations can be made in the offering plates,
online, or in the office. This program is being set up to help the
Sedona residents currently on assistance with those items not
covered by state programs. (Hygiene products, cleaning products, diapers, over counter
medicines, paper products.). For inquiries or if you’d like to be apart of this team, please use
the new email: [email protected] or see DeNise Bowers.
CARING LAY MINISTRY TEAM: Our Grief Group with Accord Hospice will be
suspended until till Fall. However, the Alzheimer’s Support Group provided by the
Alzheimer’s Assoc. will continue on the third Friday of each month. Please join the
Ministry Team on the first Sunday of the month (August 4th) for worship at Kachina
Point at 2:00 p.m.

We are truly blessed with some wonderful talented people. We will continue in August with

CONGRATULATIONS TO EMERSON THEATER COLLABORATIVE! We want to congratulate Camilla Ross and the entire Emerson Theater Group for being awarded
“Community Collaborator of the Year” by the Arizona Community Foundation of Sedona. This
is awarded to outstanding individuals, businesses and community benefit organizations who have
demonstrated exceptional philanthropic spirit, leadership and volunteerism. “ETC is a community
leader, presenting theater that challenges our ideas about social and societal issues. ETC is on
the cutting edge, addressing issues of racial and cultural stereotypes through performance allow-
ing us to dig deep inside ourselves to see the positives and negative of our own beliefs. ETC has
provided scholarship to needy children in our community to allow them to participate in summer
camps and theater productions they otherwise might not have access to. The productions ETC
has provided our community have forced audiences to confront their prejudices and ideals and
have left them better for the experience.”

BE PREPARED WITH UMCOR
A new and troubling trend is beginning to define disaster season: stronger storms with higher winds,
heavier rain with wider reach. We saw this recently as the Gulf Coast received an extraordinary amount of
rainfall and flooding from a category 1 hurricane.
UMCOR is working diligently to stay ahead of the curve. Here are a few of the current Active Reponses:
Tropical Storm Barry—UMCOR is in close communication with disaster response coordinators in the region. Emergency Response Teams are standing by and prepared to respond as needed.
Flooding:
Illinois Great Rivers Conference and Great Plains Conference
Assessments are ongoing as areas become accessible. UMCOR is participating in statewide volunteer coordination and is engaged in partnerships including Illinois VOAD. Methodist volunteers are organizing from within the conference. UMCOR is supporting response efforts with a solidarity grant as well as recovery group trainings in cooperation with other partners.
Kansas: Assessments are ongoing. 7 Early Response Teams are completing muck out and debris removal for 112 homes. Working in Peabody, Mulvane, Douglas, Rose Hill and Augusta
Nebraska: 750 UMCOR cleanup kits distributed across affected areas. 3 Early Response Teams are completing muck out of 60 homes in Columbus and Fremont Transitioning from relief phase to recovery phase Methodists are participating in developing long-term recovery committees.
Arkansas Conference: Assessments are continuing in Ft. Smith and volunteers are assisting with muck out,
clean up and debris removal as well as distribution of 1,440 clean-up buckets and 1,300 hygiene kits.
