PART ONE: SOCIAL POSITIONS

2.2 DEMOGRAPHIC STATUS

Key indicators for Demographic Status.

a. Female and Male population figuresb. Age groupings by sexes.c. Birth and death rates by sexes.d. Child and maternal mortalitye. Life expectancy of male and femalef. Fertility indices

The last 40 years in Nigeria witnessed a population increase. The 1963 total populationestimated at 55,670,000; rose to 88,514,000 in 1991 and 140,003,542 as published in theresults of the 2006 population census (Table 2.1) This section has therefore attempted tobring out the most important profile of the Nigerian population, especially, in the last tenyears. It revealed that by providing data on eight tables, containing various attributes ofthe nation’s population, this can be easily used to compare the dynamism of the Nigeriapopulation. Marital and migrational indices of the Nigerian population are alsodocumented in the section.

REMARKS

A closer look at Table 2.1 and Table 2.2 demonstrate a clearer picture of the absolute numberand proportion of the national populations of the regions and the zones. It shows that theproportion of Nigerians residing in the North remained over 53% in both censuses. As a matterof fact, the North has always accounted for more than half of Nigeria’s population all through itshistory of over a dozen censuses.
