It also seemed that it did not maer if the tour was of a plascs processor or not. As a maer of fact, the largest crowd occurred during the tour of the Richard Childress Racing facility in Welcome, NC last November. Next year, your Secon has 6 technical dinner meeng sessions planned for the upcoming 2009/2010 fiscal. All of them will have tours in conjuncon with them. During the past two terms the P-C Secon has awarded $26,000 in scholarships and grants to North Carolina State University, Central Carolina Community College, Wake Tech and The Polymers Center of Excellence. Our stated mission of the Society of Plascs Engineers is to help further the scienfic and engineering knowledge of plascs. Our scholarships and grants have helped to accomplish this mission. We were also very pleased to learn that, earlier this year, one of our members, Russell Broome, was awarded Honored Service Member status by the Execuve Commiee of the Society. The State of our SPE Section

My how time flies! It’s hard to believe that almost two years has passed since I became your president in July of 2007. A lot has transpired in that span of time, some good, some not so good. But all things considered (with apologies to the National Public Radio news show), the State of the Piedmont Coastal SPE Section is healthy.

Financially, we are quite healthy. We have, as of May 12th, $18,724.15 in the bank. Our checking account has $2,723.66 in it and the two 6-month CDs are now worth $16,000.49. Our newsletter advertising programs and our annual Martin A. “Marty” Ryba Memorial golf outings were both quite successful and the primary reasons our Section is doing so well financially. It is my sincere hope that we continue to enjoy this success in the coming years.

On a very sad note, we lost one of the key members of our Section in January, 2008 when we lost our long-time golf outing Chairman, Marty Ryba, to a sudden and unexpected heart attack. He was instrumental in heading up one of the most successful golf outings the Section ever had in October of 2007. Although we did quite well in 2008 with our golf outing, somehow it just wasn’t the same. We made a decent profit, but Marty’s unbridled enthusiasm was sorely missed. However, his wonderful bride, Jackie, stepped up and the “show went on” very successfully. Marty’s memory will always be with us as your Board of Directors renamed our golf tournament in his well-deserved honor.

The Section was awarded the Pinnacle Award (Gold) by the Society in 2007, 2008 and 2009. This is a direct tribute to activity level of the entire Section and its involvement in promoting the scientific and engineering knowledge of plastics.

We have a complete, very active and involved Board of Directors which is serious about properly conducting the business of the Section. This was critical to our success.

Our membership, although decreasing slightly in 2008, is on a very positive growth spurt at present. We are now at 130 members and growing. Many thanks go to George Millington, Membership Chairman, for his efforts to both keep existing members and sign up new members through the utilization of the Society’s AIM program.

We tried several new approaches to attract more attendees at our technical sessions. One thing became abundantly clear: when a tour was scheduled, attendance increased. It also seemed that it did not matter if the tour was of a plastics processor or not. As a matter of fact, the largest crowd occurred during the tour of the Richard Childress Racing facility in Welcome, NC last November. Next year, your Section has 6 technical dinner meeting sessions planned for the upcoming 2009/2010 fiscal. All of them will have tours in conjunction with them.

During the past two terms the P-C Section has awarded $26,000 in scholarships and grants to North Carolina State University, Central Carolina Community College, Wake Tech and The Polymers Center of Excellence. Our stated mission of the Society of Plastics Engineers is to help further the scientific and engineering knowledge of plastics. Our scholarships and grants have helped to accomplish this mission.

We were also very pleased to learn that, earlier this year, one of our members, Russell Broome, was awarded Honored Service Member status by the Executive Committee of the Society. Russell is most deserving of this distinguished recognition and the Section is extremely pleased to have nominated him for this honor. He will receive this recognition at the ANTEC in Chicago in June, just prior to NPE 2009.

Communication with our members is critical to maintaining an active Section. Members can’t attend the meetings if they don’t know about them. A big round of applause goes to our newsletter editor, Mike Jensen, who has diligently and promptly issued our newsletters to keep everyone informed as to what is happening.
