nA dog’s purpose can be whatever the person and the dog need from each otherBy Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Dogs are called “man’s best friend” for a reason. Our furry four-legged friends wag their way into our hearts as surely as our spouses and our children do, and ask for a lot less in return. Dogs provide an al-most limitless capac-ity to love, which makes them great companions for families with chil-dren, for the lonely, the elderly, in fact, just about everyone. They are our most ancient animal compan-ions, domesticated between 13,000 and 30,000 years ago, ac-cording to NPR.org.
DOGS PROVIDE COMPANIONSHIP
“A dog’s purpose can be whatever the person and the dog need from each other,” said Jody Maddock, executive director of Adopt-a-Pet in Fenton.

She recently adopted out a hard-to-place border collie mix named Egan, to a man who needed him as much as Egan needed a home.
Divorced, lonely and still mourning the loss of his dog,

made a passionate plea to Adopt-a-Pet via email, after see-ing Egan’s photo on their website. “So if Egan is the type of dog

will constantly be underfoot when I am trying to do something,
especially in the kitchen, and leaves dog hair everywhere, I would like to become his best friend,” read his email. Even though Rowen lived in an apartment and the Adopt-a-Pet staff was hoping Egan’s home would have a

DOGS TEACH LIFE LESSONS “Every day is a good day” in the lives of three dogs in the blended dog family of Amanda Braithwaite and Mike Felker of Fenton Township. Buddy, age 12, a golden retriever, was Felker’s dog originally, joined by Zoe, age 7 and Harry, age 5, both shitzus. The couple adopted Harry at Adopt-a-
Pet. His eyes had been surgically removed be-fore he had been res-cued. “We call him ‘Prince Harry,’” said Braith-waite. “He’s an amazing dog. They all sleep to-gether and guide Harry around. They are my
children. They lighten up my day. They never have a bad day. They wake up excited and go to bed excited.”
SOME FAMILIES CAN’T IMAGINE LIFE WITHOUT A DOG Two dogs weighing 100 pounds and 135 pounds respectively are the “babies” of Tim and Lauren Woychowski of Hart-land Township. Chassis, 3½, a Rhodesian ridgeback mix and Coal, 2, an American mastiff rescue dog, were both adopted. “Our son’s first words were dog and puppy,” said Lauren, formerly a veteri-nary technician and Adopt-a-Pet volun-teer, now a stay-at-home mom. “They’re good buddies.” The family had another dog that was extremely special in their lives, Axle, a Bull Mastiff, who passed away from can-cer. “He was my husband’s best friend,” said Lauren. “Mine, too.” Lauren, 31, can’t imagine their lives without a dog. “I grew up having a fam-ily dog, a Golden Retriever, a rescue. T.J. lived to be 13. He was supposed to go to leader dog school, but he had hip dys-plasia. I had him my entire childhood.”

DOGSContinued from Page 1Bfenced-in backyard, they were moved to try this match by making Rowen a “foster dad” to Egan. The match worked. Just this week after the adoption, Rowen emailed Maddock a long detailed note with this passionate ending: “So Egan has changed a cold and empty apartment with a sad man shuffling about into a home, a warm welcoming place that we like to be at, a nice place for us to plot our adventures. We are really looking forward to summer. We have lots of plans. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you, Jody. I love that dog. I think he loves me, too.”
DOGS CREATE FAMILIES Many times, it’s love like that between dogs and humans that create a family. Gordon and Paula McAllister of Ty-rone Township, have two brother-sister Brussels Griffon dogs, Buddah and Gigi — whom they call their “babies.” It’s the breed of dog that Jack Nicholson had in the 1997 movie, “As Good As It Gets.” “We’ve had a lot of loss with dogs,” said Paula, admitting they used to visit dogs that weren’t theirs to fill a void after their 18-year-old teacup poodle, Muffy, died. There had been several other losses, too, and the huge emotional toll on their family was almost enough to make them call it quits with dog ownership. But a chance encounter with a litter of Brussels Griffon puppies at a school football game turned that around. Two years ago, Buddah was diagnosed with diabetes, requiring twice daily insu-lin shots. “We arrange our lives around ‘Buddah time’ at 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.,” said Paula. “He’s doing well, run-ning with the neighbor dogs. They sleep in our bed. Buddah has his own pillow but he likes to share ours. When they get in our bed, they just wait for us to join them.”
n Dogs hold a special place in our hearts because of their seemingly endless capac-ity to love.

Ladies swimsuits have gotten
1910s: Bare Arms and Legs Women began ditching skirts and long sleeves in favor of bathing suits that, while still modest, allowed for more freedom to swim. However, in some areas beach censors still imposed modesty regulations, like making sure shorts were the right length.
1920s to Early 1930s: Body-Hugging Fits Jantzen’s new swim-suits were more figure hugging and less restric-tive than any previous swimwear, cut at the up-per thigh instead, like shorts.
1946: Hello, Bikini The first official bikini was introduced at a poolside fashion event in Paris. Rumor has it that inventor Louis Réard couldn’t find a fashion model to wear it, so he hired a stripper, Micheline Bernar-dini. The skimpy suit was originally banned in Italy and Spain for indecency.
Early 1950s: Bikinis Go Mainstream French actress Brigitte Bardot played a huge role in popularizing the bikini when she wore one to the 1953 Cannes Festival, and in some of her movies.
Early 1960s: California Girls It was the era of the Southern California-style beach party and the “itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-polka-dot bikini” (thanks to that catchy song).
1970s: All-American Although decidedly less modest than its prior styles, Farrah Fawcett’s sexy, low-cut one-piece was the stan-dard of this era and a mo-mentary return to simplicity.
1974: Thong Song The thong was intro-duced, and first worn in Rio de Janeiro and St. Tropez. Not surprisingly, it took years for the style to really catch on in other countries.
1980s: High-Cut Pageant models like Marla Maples showed off their tans and big hair in skimpy bikinis. And high-cut bottoms were everywhere, making it no coincidence that Brazilian waxes were introduced to the U.S. in 1987.
1990s: Baywatch Fever Thanks to sexy lifeguard Pamela Anderson, swim-suits that were cut high on the hips and butt, and barely covering the breast area became popular.
2000s: Body Accep-tance While skimpy bikinis are still everywhere, swimsuit makers are starting to recognize a wider range of bodies, making attrac-tive plus-sized swimsuits that help more women feel confident at the beach.
1940s: Figure Flattery With elements l ike sweetheart necklines and pleating, bathing suits began to echo the era’s dress styles — and be-come more flattering.
Sources: goodhousekeeping.com and victoriana.com
Compiled By Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 Some ladies spend an entire fall, winter and spring sculpting their bodies to perfection, just in time for the big summer swimsuit reveal. Then there are others who don’t really care; they just want to have some fun in the sun. The following shows how much women’s bathing suits have changed throughout the decades.
Late 1800s to Early 1900s: Sailor-inspired styles were everywhere. Along with frilly collars and, blue, white, and red stripes, many women wore stock-ings and even lace-up shoes to the beach.

VERA HOGAN
Getting along Last weekend, my husband and I watched a TV commercial we had never seen before on a regular network. It was by a Catholic diocese and the message was, ‘There is more to being a Catholic than attending Mass one hour a week.’ I looked at my husband and said, ‘That’s a first, why do you sup-pose they felt the need to make and spend a lot of money on a com-mercial like that?’ We didn’t know and just shrugged our shoulders. I was thinking a lot about that commercial be-cause I have witnessed a few behaviors outside my home and office this past week that made me think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s probably why.’ We all have our own unique per-sonalities. I’ll be the first to admit that mine can be challenging. I can be im-patient at times, have a sense of humor that some people don’t understand, and usually don’t have a filter when it comes to saying what’s on my mind or when something is bothering me. One thing I am not, however, is cruel, at least not intentionally. And I try never to be rude if I can help it. If I have a problem with someone or something someone did or said, I will take it up with them privately and see if we can resolve our issues. We may not agree, but I do expect to be able to have a cordial conversation without name-calling or other childish behavior.
If it’s another woman, I have even higher expectations because women need to lift each other up and empower each other, not tear each other down, especially by doing things publicly that could cause permanent harm. Toward the end of January, I wrote a column that I intended to be funny. I was completely shocked when a few silly statements I made drew a flurry of negative Hot lines, phone calls and emails from readers. I was called ‘disgusting,’ ‘disgrace-ful,’ ‘despicable’ and worse by people I’ve never met and likely never will. They don’t know me yet they decided to sum up my entire personality and worth as a human being by what I wrote in that one column, which again, was meant to be funny. But, I have tough skin. I can take it and something wonderful came out of this entire experience. One of the emails I received was from a local woman named Michele. She wrote me a 12-inch email (I actually measured it) to let me know what she thought of my column. She is one of the people I decided to respond to, and replied to her email with my explanation. She replied again and so did I, and we actually began get-ting to know each other. Then, we decided to meet for lunch in mid-February. Michele is one of the nicest, most interesting people I’ve had the pleasure to visit with in a long time. We are close in age and have much in common. I enjoyed myself so much that I could have sat there talking with her for a few more hours. Michele and her husband travel quite a bit, but I am looking forward to our next visit in April. Talk about turning a negative into a positive! It would never have occurred to me that I could gain a new friend from this experience. I think this is how it’s supposed to be done. Yes, I’m sure it is.

THE BRANCHEAU LAW FIRMLong-time Fenton attorney merges practice with Sharon Minor, now retired, and opens her own law firm By Sally [email protected]; 810-629-8282 Stacey N. Brancheau, attorney at law, merged her local practice with local attorney Sharon Miner, when Miner retired in January 2016. She opened The Brancheau Law Firm after years of private practice and mentoring with Miner. Her office is at 1100 Torrey Rd., Suite 200, in Fenton.
How did you get started locally in the practice of law? I began my legal career in 1994. I knew early on that I wanted to focus on estate planning, and was fortunate to meet attorney Sharon Miner. I moved my practice to the Miner Professional Building in downtown Fenton, sharing space with Sharon for several years. After 10 years in private practice, I pursued an opportunity with a regional bank as a trust officer, allowing me to gain experience in trust administration and wealth planning. I reconnected with Sharon at a continuing education legal course and we were both ready to make career changes. With Sharon about to retire, it was a perfect fit.
What sets your law practice apart from others? I made a conscious choice to focus solely on estates, trusts, probate and elder law matters, rather than become a general practice firm. Our passion, experience, commitment and willingness to partner with other professionals set us apart. Our goal is

Serving clients as an attorney, a trust officer and wealth planner allows me to use my certifications as a Certified Financial Planner and Certified Trust and Financial Advisor to provide clients with a comprehensive plan that coordinates all aspects of their wealth.
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about estate planning and wealth management? How important it is to plan. Everybody has a plan; either designed by the individual reflecting their personal wishes, or it is a plan designed by the state of Michigan. In the words of writer Alan Lakein: Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT
FOR THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF MICHIGAN
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Petitioner, v. Civil Action No. 15-mc-51209PATRICK J. CONELY, Honorable Linda V. Parker Respondent.
ORDER ALLOWING ALTERNATIVE SERVICE
On September 1, 2015, an action was initiated in this Court by the United States against Patrick Conley, seeking to judicially enforce the Internal Rev-enue Service Summons. An Amended Petition to Enforce Internal Revenue Service Summonses was filed and an Opinion and Order Granting the Gov-ernment’s Motion to Amend Petition to Enforce IRS Summonses and Ordering Respondent to Show Cause was is-sued on January 4, 2017. That order directed the United States to person-ally serve Mr. Conely with the govern-ment’s amended petition and opinion and order granting the government’s motion and to show cause. The government has filed a motion with a supporting affidavit, attesting to the fact that the respondent in this action cannot be personally served with the amended petition and opinion and order granting the government’s motion and ordering respondent to show cause because the respondent is evading service. It therefore appears to this Court that personal service of the amended petition and opinion and order granting the government’s mo-tion and ordering respondent to show cause in this action cannot be made on the respondent, and publication is the best means available to apprise re-spondent of the pending of this action. Accordingly, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that a copy of this order be published once each week for three consecutive weeks in the Tri-County Times, a newspaper of general circulation within the County of Genesee in the State of Michigan. The first publication of this order shall be made within ten (10) days from the date of the entry of this order. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the United States shall serve a copy of this order, the amended petition and opinion and order granting the govern-ment’s motion to amend petition and ordering respondent to show cause at respondent’s post office box by first class certified mail, return receipt. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the respondent, Patrick Conley, shall on or before April 21, 2017, serve his writ-ten response to the Amended Petition on Jules DePorre, Assistant U.S. At-torney, whose address is 600 Church Street, Flint, Michigan 48502, or take such other action as may be permitted by law. Failure to comply with this or-der will result in Patrick Conley appear-ing in person before this Court on June 13, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. to explain why he should not be compelled to comply with all of the terms and requirements of the summons issued by the Inter-nal Revenue Service and previously served on the respondent.Failure to comply with this order could lead to the initiation of arrest proceed-ings against respondent for contempt pursuant to 26 U.S.C. Sec. 7604 and/or prosecution for failure to obey the summons under 26 U.S.C. Sec. 7210. IT IS SO ORDERED.Dated: March 13, 2017 s/Linda V. Parker LINDA V. PARKER U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE

Dorothy Lenore Field (Sheldon) 1923-2017 Dorothy Lenore Field (Sheldon) - age 93, of Holly passed from this world to the next on March 17, 2017 just three short weeks following Rex’s passing. The two were married 71 years. Dear mother of Bruce, the late Steven, and Cathy Field. Loving grandmother of the late Adam, Kaylan, Justin (Kiyomi), Joseph (Heather), and Brandon. Great-grandmother of Aurora. Sister of the late Fred (Dorothy) Sheldon. Dorothy also leaves many extended family members and dear friends. Dorothy was born July 20, 1923, in Detroit to Ralph and Bessie Sheldon. Dorothy grew up mostly in Detroit, graduating from Cooley High School. Dorothy met Rex at Fish Lake when they were both 16 years old. Dorothy worked in a factory during World War II that made machine gun parts. After the war, Dorothy and Rex were married on July 7, 1945. Dorothy became the perfect wife and “lady of the house.” She enjoyed her home and took great pride in caring for it. Her favorite time of year was summertime. She liked the warmth and taking care of her flowers in the yard. She loved butterflies. Dorothy was an exceptional “behind the scenes” supporter of her family and friends. She was always there to listen to anyone who needed her. Dorothy was all in for her family and country, nurturing three generations of military servicemen. She was amazingly supportive of her oldest son, a paratrooper in Vietnam, as well as her middle son, an infantryman who was wounded in the war in Vietnam; all the while caring for her youngest child, her daughter Cathy. Dorothy spent a great deal of time caring for and helping Cathy in the care of her three sons in the early years of their lives in Fenton. Dorothy found her greatest joy in being a grandmother. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, was always interested in what they were doing, and especially loved pictures. A Mass was held in Dorothy’s honor and she will be interred in Highland cemetery. Share memories at temrowskifamilyfuneralhome.com. Donations can be directed to the St. John’s Renovation Fund.

DEAR DR. ROACH: It would be helpful if you described some of the warning signs/symptoms of a bad hip that requires replacement. I now know that such a condition does not necessarily announce itself with chronic severe pain in the hip. Indeed, what sent me to the doctor was a recurrent pain in my groin. My hip was relatively pain-free, and even then I had only a mild discom-fort that I thought was simply some arthritis. What I failed to appreciate over the past few years was the very gradual loss of my range of motion, leading to difficulty with simple activi-ties, such as tying my right shoe or cutting my toenails. In retrospect, I feel rather foolish that I did not realize sooner that I was having hip problems. Perhaps you can alert others to the signs of gradual hip degeneration that fall short of acute hip pain. — B.A.
ANSWER: You have done a lot of the work for me. The groin is the most common location for pain from hip osteoarthritis, but other locations — especially pelvis and knee — all can be coming from the hip. We suspect arthritis when pain is worse after activity and improves with rest. But it is the range of motion and pain with movement that we as internists look for on exam to help us decide whether the complaints are likely from the hip joint or from another location. Pain is common with internal rotation (such as placing the outside of your ankle on the opposite knee and letting the elevated knee fall to the side). I think the main message is that pain in the hip or groin, especially if worse with exercise, suggests arthritis, and an X-ray can confirm the diagnosis. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have nitroglycerin with me, as I have heart disease. If I see someone having a heart attack, can I give them one? — J.G.
ANSWER: I applaud your civic-mindedness, but you should not give out nitroglycerine. It is an extremely powerful medication that should be used only when sure of the diagnosis. I recall the chief resident during my training warning a fellow intern that he needed to do a careful exam before giving nitroglycerine, be-cause it can be fatal in people with severe aortic stenosis, a blockage in one of the heart valves. It made quite an impression on me. Trained first-responders carry aspirin, nitroglycerine and oxygen for heart attack victims. The key is to get the person to definitive medical care as soon as possible. I do recommend that everyone who is physically capable of providing CPR learn to do so. You can save the life of a loved one or a total stranger.

Obituaries
James G. “Bud” Harlow - age 86, of Holly, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2017, following a very long, courageous battle with cancer. His wife, Pat, was at his side, in Bradenton, FL. Bud was born on June 15, 1930, in Kansas City, MO, to Emily and James Harlow. Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Pat Harlow; daughter, Kristie (Bill) Plawinski; son, Kurt (Erin) Harlow; step-children: Karlene Lehman, Darrold (Trudy) Lehman, John (Jacquie) Lehman, Onna (Jim) Cross; brother, Ned (Karen) Harlow; sister-in-law, Phyllis Wallis; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Barb Harlow. Bud grew up in Kansas City, MO, where he worked with his dad and his grandfather at Harlow Foods grocery store. He graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in geology. In 1950, he met and married Barbara Reyburn, of Kent City, MI. Bud then served in the Army, during the Korean War. Following his service they moved to Michigan, where Bud started his 30 year career at Consumers Power, in the Gas Division. He was a Marketing and Energy consultant, upon retiring, in 1998. Some of his favorite years were when he ran
the Training Center for field employees in Jackson. He and Barb spent many of their married years traveling and camping throughout the U.S. and Canada, until her death in 1990. After he and Patricia fell in love and were married, in 1992, they found that they, too, had a passion for travel, when they began to venture around the world together. Over the next 20 years they traveled to all seven continents. Two of Bud’s favorite sights were seeing the Pyramids of Egypt, and the wildlife and scenery of Antarctica. Bud will always be known for his love of swimming and the hours spent working on cars, trailers and motorhomes. He helped many friends and relatives build homes, run electricity, and do plumbing. Friends and family will miss Bud and his “sage advice.” Visitation will be from 3-7 PM Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Dryer Funeral Home, Holly. A funeral service will be held at 9 AM on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Calvary United Methodist, Holly, where Bud has been a member since 1968. Burial will be at the Great Lakes National Cemetery at 10:30 AM on Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. www.dryerfuneralhomeholly.com.
