Howdidyourpartnershipcomeaboutanddevelop?Weconsultedwithmanyvoluntaryandstatutoryorganisationswithmainlyfreenew/existingservicestodeliver,butwerehavingsomeissuesreachingisolatedpeopleorinpersuadingthemtoacceptsupport.AgeUKHertshasanewanti-hoardingproject.Thelunchesprovideanopportunitytodiscussthisissueandhelpwiththeattitudinalchangeswhicharerequiredforpeopletoaccepthelp.HILSwerekeentojoinaspartnersandshowcasethevalueoftheirflexibleMealsservice,changeperceptionsaboutthemeals,andpublicisetheirnewservices.SAOPThasgrantsandanewfreeboilerservicingprogrammetooffertheover60s.Groundwork’sGreenAidersprogrammehelpselderlypeopletakecontroloftheirovergrowngardensthroughaone-offgardeningservice.HertsHealthyHomesofferassistanceincludingpersonalvisits,insulation,moneyforheatingbills,butwerefailingtoreachtheirtargetednumbers.CABknowthathundredsofolderpeoplecouldbefinanciallybetteroffviatheirBenefitchecksandwanttoreachmorepeoplewiththismessage.ThesekeyPartnershaveattendedalllunchesandtalkedtomanyoftheolderpeopleabouttheirneeds.Afurthertenpartnershavesincejoinedandprovidedservicesatthelunches.

Ensuring130(endofproject230+)ofthemostisolatedpeopleover70intheDistrictaremoreawareofservices,knowhowtoaskforhelpandaremoreinclinedtoaskforhelp.StrongPartnershipbetweenover15communitygroupsservingolderpeople.Repositoryofuptodateinformationonolderpeople’sservices,andscheduledmeetingwithSADCtorequestanupdateoftheirOlderPeople’sGuide.Casestudies:‘D’is77,withlimitedvision,andisolatedduetonoclosefamilyorfriends.ThroughtheCommunityNavigatorhewaspersuadedtoattendalunchandprovidedvolunteertransport.HenowhasCommunityTransporttogotoalunchclubtwiceaweek,hehasmettwogentlemenandnowplaysCribbageonaThursday.Hesayshe’sveryhappy:meetingthePartnersatthelunchhaschangedhislife.‘L’iselderly,livingalone,strugglingfinancially:livingonlyinoneroom,duetoheatingcosts.CABcanhelpwithanattendanceallowanceapplication,andsheisconsideringusingtheFoodBank.‘P’is92,illiterate,livingalone.Heisdepressedandlonely.WehelpedhimapplytotheOldPeoplesTrustandhenowhasfreemealsonwheelstwiceaweek.WealsocontactedthelocalchurchasPcannotattendservices.Someonenowvisitshimonceaweekforprayer.Henowreceives‘TalkingNewspapers’onceaweekkeepinghimconnectedwiththeworldaroundhim.Psaidthatwehavechangedhislife.

4. Howpartnershipworkingishelpingyoutoachievemore.

Workingwithcommunitypartners,volunteers,localbusinessesandstatutoryhealthandsocialcarepartnershashelpedus:ReachthemostvulnerableandisolatedolderpeopleintheDistrict:Volunteersofferingtransporthasmadeagreatdifferenceinenablingolderpeopletogetoutandseewhat’savailable.NoneofourMainPartnersoffertransportorhomesupport,sothemostisolatedwouldnotnormallyhavetheopportunitytoexperience/hearabouttheirservice.Encouragemanyolderpeopletochangetheirmindaboutacceptinghelp:Allclientshadatleastthreeconversationswithpeoplewhocouldhelpthem.Thelunchescreatedapositiveatmospheremakingiteasierforpeopletotalkopenlyabouttheirneeds.Thepresenceofmanyotherolderpeoplecontributedtoachangeinatmosphereandthereforeattitude.OurAmbassadorMaureen,sharingherstoryofhoweasyitistoaskforhelpandreinforcingthatSocialServiceswon’tgetinvolved.ReduceCostsandProvidediverseinformation.ProvidingGoodyBagsfrom‘SmallActsofKindness’filledwithtreatsfromlocalbusinesses,BurtonsBiscuitsandPremierFoods,provideatangiblewaytoshowolderpeoplethattheyarevalued.Itensuresthatthemanyusefulleafletsanditemswedistributearekeptinoneplaceandreferredtowhichhelpedustoreduceprojectcosts.TheGoodyBagisatalkingpointfortheolderpeopletosharewithotherolderrelativesandfriends,tospreadthewordaboutaskingforhelp.

5. Howyouaremakingsurethatthepartnershipisworkingeffectively.

Withhealth&socialcareorganisationsandtheCommunityNavigatorswehaveregularmeetingstosharefeedbackactionsandimpactregardingtheclientreferralstheyhavemadesothattheycanthenrecordandfollowuponthis.Thisbuildsthetrustthattheprojectisdoingwhatwepromisedandthattheirclientisbeingappropriatelyhelped.ItalsohasthecumulativeeffectthattheycanmentionpositiveoutcomestootherclientswhoareresistanttohelpandencouragethemtotakepartinBYWIandacceptsupport.Whenworkingwithandengagingthecorporatesector,requestingdonationofgoodsandservicesweknewitwasimportantfortheirCSRtargets,aswellashumaninterest,forustodemonstratethesocialimpactoftheirdonations.Weprovideregularupdateswithphotosofthelunchesandsmilingfacesandquotes.WeprovideamonthlynewsletteroutliningallachievementstodateincludingananonymouscasestudyTheprojectcoordinatorisamemberoftheOlderPeople’sStrongerTogetherPartnershipsohasattendedthe1stmeetingtopublicisetheproject,outcomesandnewwaysofworkingandsharing.Ourvolunteershaveregularmeetingswiththecoordinatorandhavebeeninstrumentalinsharingideasthathaveensuredthesmoothrunningoftheluncheventsandthatimpactisgatheredfromall.Afinaltrustpointisthatwehave,asfaraspossible,arrangedforPartnerstopresenttootherPartners’staff,sharingtheirknowledgeandexpertise.

6. Whatyouarelearningfromeachother.

OlderpeoplehavemanyandvariedbarrierstoacceptinghelpPartnerstoldustheyhavelearnedfromtheCVSthatabetterunderstandingofolderpeople’sbehaviourwhenscopingaprojectwillleadtogreatersuccessinencouragingolderpeopletouseanewservice.�Wehavetalkedthemthroughhowtoresearchthetypeofbarriersthatolderpeoplemayhaveandtotailorsolutionsforeachone.LearningaboutotherPartnersservicesenhancesyourowncredibilityandoffering.Thegreatestimpactfromthisprojectisthatorganisationshelpingolderpeoplearemoreawareofotherservicesandhowtoaccessthem.Theyhaveseenthattheorganisationswhichknowmostaboutgeneralavailableservices,notjusttheirown,arebetterabletoconnectwithclientsastheyaren’tseentohaveanagendaorsalespitch.Weplantocreateadocumentwithallcontactsofthelocalpartners,aswellasworkingwithSADCtoupdatetheirOlderPeople’sGuide.TheCVSisalsorunningStrongerTogetherPartnerships(STP)oneofwhichisfocusedonolderpeople,sowehavebeenabletodisseminateinformationandsharelearningsfromtheprojectwithothersandviceversa.CommunityTransportThePartnersaremoreawareofthepartthatcommunitytransportplaysinensuringthatthemostvulnerableandisolatedreceivesupport.WeaccessedvolunteerdriversviatheStAlbansMumsnetworkandPartnersarelookingathowtheycanharness‘casual’volunteerstohelponanad-hocbasis.
