C O B U R G WIN WELL TO OLD PLACEPARADE SURPRISE CAULFIELD GRAM .

By GEORGE McTAGGART

Coburg scored a big win over St. Bernard's in the vital game last Saturdayand held their place in the four. They meet Old Paradians in the First Semi-final at Elsternwick Park today.

Parade caused a surprise when they finished too strongly for CaulfieldGrammarians and won by 20 points . It was anybody's game until the lastquarter with little between the scores .

Geelong were well beaten by University Blacks but held on to secondplace when Ivanhoe went down to Tooronga-Malvern .

Fourteen of the 56 teams in the fours will drop out of the fight forpremiership honours today - the losers of the respective First Semi-finals .

Coburg made good use of the windin the first quarter to establish a 45-point lead, and with St . Bernard's notutilising the breeze to the fullest insecond term, Coburg led by 31 pointsat the interval .

St Bernard's held them early in thethird quarter, but Coburg broke awaylater on and were more than 9 goals infront at the last change . They finishedwell and were winners by over 10goals .

Parade were faster to the ball thanCaulfield, won in several key posi-tions and were more purposeful intheir play . Caulfield led by 3 points atquarter-time, Parade by 5 points at theinterval and Caulfield by 2 points atthree-quarter-time, but Parade kicked6 goals in the last quarter .

Ormond opened up a big lead overUniversity Blues in the first term, kicking 9 .7 to 1 .1, and although theBlues fought back strongly in the sec-ond quarter to add 6 goals, Ormondwent right away after the interval toscore by a huge margin .

Melbourne High outplayed MonashBlues in the first half and led by 26points, but it was a different storyafter the break, when they manaredto score only 2 .5 while Monash kick-ed 11 .7 and won by 5 goals .

North Old Boys handled the ball alittle better than De La Salle and werestronger in the air, and although they

won by only 9 points it was "De La's"straight kicking (10 .4) which kept themin the game .

Geelong kept within striking dis-tance of the Blacks in the first half, when they trailed by 20 points, but theBlacks kicked 5 .2 to a point in thethird quarter to virtually sea] the gameand won by 51 points .

Old Trinity, who had to win to havea chance of taking part in the finals, crashed against Old Carey's accuratekicking and were beaten by 5 goals .They kicked 14.15 to Carey's 20 .9 .

But it made no difference to Trinity, really, because Old Scotch, who werea game ahead of them, made sure ofholding their place with a 25-pointwin over Collegians .

Ivanhoe lost the chance to displaceGeelong from second when they weresurprisingly beaten by Tooronga-Malvern . The margin was 3 points .

Assumption held on to second placewhen they beat Power House by 14points in a high-scoring game . HadHouse won they would have movedup to second .

Old Xaverians' hopes of making thefour ended when they went down by26 points to St . Kilda CBC who heldtheir place, and actually moved ahea dof power House .

Bank recorded their only success forthe season when they beat Old Mel-burnians by 28 points . Fairfield beatOld Haileybury by 5 points in a high-scorer (18 .18 to 18 .13) .

Parkside clung to their place in thefour with a 1-point win over Alphina-ton, who had to win to get into thefinals . Alphington had the chance how-ever, with four more scoring shotsthan Parkside, kicking 11 .17 to Park-side's 12 .12.

Alphington were a little unlucky asthey were beaten by a point a fewweeks ago by Old Geelong . Theyfinished the season dead square -won 9, lost 9, and 1559 points for andagainst .LaTrobe Blacks' poor kicking in

front of goal nearly cost them thematch against Footscray Tech, whokicked 17 .9 to 14.28 and were beatenby a point .

Old Brighton thrashed Brunswickto the tune of nearly 10 goals and OldGeelong beat Hampton Rovers bynearly 12 goals to save themselvesfrom relegation .

ANZ Bank surprised Marcellin whenthey scored by 14 points and Old Ivan-hoe overwhelmed AJAX . State Sav-ings Bank and Glenhuntly also woneasily .

North Brunswick failed in their bidfor the four when they went down by8 points to Old Mentonians, whose winclinched fourth place for them . St .Bede's had a close call with bottomteam, LaTrobe Reds, winning by only4 points .

And Dookie and Longerenong put upa creditable performance against theunbeaten Old Camberwell, who scoredby 21 points . Elsternwick won easilyfrom Monash Whites .

The top four teams in Junior 1 allwon with plenty to spare but Coburgcrashed against Tooronga-Malvern inSection 2, going down by more than7 goals .

A disturbing feature of this sectionwas the fact that three clubs failedto fulfil their obligations and forfeitedthe game to the opposing club . In eachcase it was the home club which for-

feited - Brunswick, Beverley Hillsand AJAX .

In the Reserves, Coburg drew withSt. Bernard's, Carey easily beatTrinity, Blacks were too strong forGeelong, Assumption beat PowerHouse by 5 goals and gained a place inthe finals at the expense of OldXaverians, who went down by 11points to St . Kilda CBC .

Old Geelong beat Hampton Roversby 14 points and put them out of sec-ond place, AJAXs 3-point win overOld Ivanhoe enabled them to do thesame thing, and Monash Whites beatElsternwick by over 7 goals .

BALL BRIEFS

DOUBLE CENTURY TO PARKSIDERBill Rodda adds a further milestone in

Parkside's record book by playing his 200thgame today in the first semi against LaTrobeBlacks . Bill has been and still is a wonder-ful player for Parkside, having won the clubbest and fairest three times and having beenthe back pocket player in the 1963 premier-ship side . Bill's assets are his strength andhis determination to get the ball . All Park-siders should dedicate themselves to winthis fi rst semi to leave Bill with pleasantmemories of his 200th .

100 TO ST . KEVIN'S RESERVES CAPTAINToday is a big day for St . Kevin's John

Allan . John, our Reserves Captain-Coachplays his 100th game and leads the side inthe fi rst semi-final . Johnny has been withthe club for eight years, playing in boththe senior and reserve sides . Johnny's en-thusiasm and determination has been fan-tastic and a fitting reward for him wouldbe for the seconds to win the fla g thisyear. All at St . Key's join to thank John forhis tremendous effort and congratulate himon a job well done .Pat Fennelly, a great clubman down at

N.O.B .S. recently played his 50th game .Noted for long-kicking and an inability tohand-pass . Fuzz reached this mark in threeseasons despite a very serious car accidenttowards the end of last season . Pat attendsall club functions, but is often hard-pressedto remember them afterwards .

Congratulations to one of Parkside's pen-cils Ken "Cockroach" McLay on his 50thgame today. Ken who came up through thejuniors is improving with every game andis a certain future senior player, Keep upthe good wing play Cocky.

Anyone who has followed Old Brighton'ssuccess this season will agree that one ofthe reasons we are playing in the secondsemi-final today is the contribution JohnLevvey has made to the team's perfor-mances . Captain of our Junior side last year,Johnny has been a great player in '72 andwill receive his reward today by playing his50th game .
