1.4 DEFINITIONS

A. Environments: The following terms distinguish between different corrosive exposures:1. "Severe environments" are highly corrosive industrial atmospheres with sustained

exposure to high humidity and condensation and with frequent cleaning using strong chemicals. Environments with heavy concentrations of strong chemical fumes and frequent splashing and spilling of harsh chemical products are severe environments.

2. "Moderate environments" are corrosive industrial atmospheres with intermittent exposure to high humidity and condensation, occasional mold and mildew development, and regular cleaning with strong chemicals. Environments with exposure to heavy concentrations of chemical fumes and occasional splashing and spilling of chemical products are moderate environments.

3. "Mild environments" are industrial atmospheres with normal exposure to moderate humidity and condensation, occasional mold and mildew development, and infrequent cleaning with strong chemicals. Environments with low levels of mild chemical fumes and occasional splashing and spilling of chemical products are mild environments. Normal outdoor weathering is also considered a mild environment.

B. Commercial as used in this Section refers to a product well suited for a commercial application.

C. DFT as used in this Section refers to the Dry Film Thickness of the coating.

D. Enamel refers to any acrylic or alkyd (oil) base paint which dries leaving an eggshell, pearl, satin, semi-gloss or high gloss enamel finish.

E. LEED as used in this Section refers to USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Products listed meet LEED criteria for environmentally safe interior primers, paints and coatings.

F. OTC as used in this Section refers to the Ozone Transmission Commission. OTC has established the following VOC levels for the Northeastern United States. Products shall meet the following OTC limits for VOC's.1. Interior flat paints: 100 grams per liter or less, per gallon.2. Interior enamels: 150 grams per liter or less, per gallon.3. Interior stains: 250 grams per liter or less, per gallon.4. Interior primers: 200 grams per liter or less, per gallon.5. Rust preventive coatings: 400 grams per liter or less, per gallon.6. Dry fog coatings: 400 grams per liter or less, per gallon.7. Floor coatings: 250 grams per liter or less, per gallon.

G. VOC as used in this Section refers to Volatile Organic Compounds found in primers, paints, sealers and stains. The level of VOC’s appears after each product listed in the Schedule in grams per liter (g/L).

H. Paints are available in a wide range of sheens or glosses, as measured by a gloss meter from a 60 degree angle from vertical, as a percentage of the amount of light that is reflected. The following terms are used to describe the gloss of our products.1. Eggshell refers to low-sheen finish with a gloss range between 5 to 8 when measured

at a 60-degree meter or 15 to 20 when measured at an 85-degree meter.2. Satin refers to low-sheen finish with a gloss range between 18 to 23 when measured

at a 60-degree meter or 47 to 53 when measured at an 85-degree meter.3. Semi-Gloss refers to medium-sheen finish with a gloss range between 40 to 55 when

measured at a 60-degree meter or 70 to 85 when measured to an 85-degree meter.4. Gloss/Full Gloss refers to high-sheen finish with a gloss range more than 70 when

measured at a 60-degree meter.5. Alternate Coating Terms:

a. Flat refers to a lusterless or matte finish with a gloss range below 15 when measured at an 85-degree meter.

b. Eggshell/Satin refers to low-sheen finish with a gloss range between 20 and 35 when measured at a 60-degree meter.

1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300 - Administrative Requirements.

B. Coordinate with Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements, for submittal procedures and LEED Submittal Forms MRc3, MRc4, MRc5.

C. LEED Certification Product Data:1. See Section 01 11 13 - Work Covered by Contract Documents.2. Submittals Required:

a. MRc3 Resource Reuse (LEED Form).b. MRc4 Recycled Content (LEED Form).c. MRc5 Local and Regional Materials (LEED Form).d. EQc4.1 Low Emitting Materials - Adhesives and Solvents (VOC Certification

Letter).e. EQc4.2 Low Emitting Materials - Paint (VOC Certification Letter).f. Green Seal Standard GS-11 Certified Product certificates.

D. Product Data: For each paint system indicated, submit manufacturer's descriptive literature and specifications.1. Materials List: Provide an inclusive list of required coating materials. Indicate each

material and cross-reference specific coating, finish system, and application. Identify each material by manufacturer's catalog number and general classification.

2. Manufacturer's Information: Manufacturer's technical information, including VOC content, solids content, recommended methods of application, application rates, label analysis, safety and environmental cautions, and instructions for handling and storing each coating material.

3. Surface preparation instructions and recommendations.4. Primer requirements and finish specification.5. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.6. Application methods.7. Cautions for storage, handling and installation.

E. Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two tone charts representative of tintable tone range or two complete sets of color chips representing manufacturer's full range of colors.

F. Verification Samples:1. For each finish product specified, two samples, minimum size 6 inches (150 mm)

square, representing actual product, color, gloss, texture and material selected by Architect.

2. For natural and stained wood finishes, provide sample on each type and quality of wood used on the project.

G. Schedule: Provide a paint schedule indicating each type of surface to be painted, and primer and finish coats proposed for use; include dry film thickness for each coating.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Employ a firm or individual experienced in applying paints and coatings similar in material, design, and extent to those indicated for this project, whose work has resulted in applications with a record of successful in-service performance.

B. Paint exposed surfaces. If an item or a surface is not specifically mentioned, paint the item or surface the same as similar adjacent materials or surfaces. If a color of finish is not indicated, Architect will select from standard colors and finishes available.

C. Do not paint prefinished items, concealed surfaces, finished metal surfaces, operating parts, and labels unless indicated.

D. Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.1. Finish surfaces for verification of products, colors and sheens.2. Finish area designated by Architect.3. Provide samples that designate primer and finish coats.4. Do not proceed with remaining work until the Architect approves the mock-up or field

sample panel.5. When approved, the mock-up or field sample panel areas will be deemed

incorporated into the Work and will serve as the standards by which the subsequent Work of this Section will be judged.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver materials to Project site in manufacturer's original, unopened packages and containers bearing manufacturer's name and label. Packaging shall bear the manufacturer's name, label, and the following list of information:1. Product name and type (description).2. Application and use instructions.3. Surface preparation.4. VOC content.5. Environmental issues.6. Batch date.7. Color number.

B. Storage:1. Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based

materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.2. Store materials in an area that is within the acceptable temperature range, per

manufacturer's instructions. Protect from freezing.3. Store materials not in use in tightly covered containers in a well-ventilated area at a

minimum ambient temperature of 45 deg F (7 deg C).4. Maintain storage containers in a clean condition, free of foreign materials and residue.

C. Handling: Maintain a clean, dry storage area, to prevent contamination or damage to the

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain or anticipate environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended. by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

B. Apply waterborne paints only when temperatures of surfaces to be painted and surrounding air are between 50 and 90 deg F (10 and 32 deg C).

C. Apply solvent-thinned paints only when temperatures of surfaces to be painted and surrounding air are between 45 and 95 deg F (7 and 35 deg C).

D. Do not apply paint in snow, rain, fog, or mist; or when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; or at temperatures less than 5 deg F (3 deg C) above the dew point; or to damp or wet surfaces.1. Painting may continue during inclement weather if surfaces and areas to be painted

are enclosed and heated within temperature limits specified by manufacturer during application and drying periods.

E. No exterior or interior painting shall be done until surfaces are thoroughly dry and cured.

1.9 WARRANTY

A. Manufacturer's Standard Warranty: 5 years.1. Provide manufacturer's standard written warranty against defects in manufacturing for

each product installed.2. Perform work and submit manufacturer's required job registration and verification

forms in accordance with manufacturer's Mold and Mildew-Proof Warranty Guidelines provided by manufacturer. Provide manufacturer's 5-year Mold and Mildew-Proof Guarantee on the following coating products:a. Perma-White Mold and Mildew-Proof Interior Paint.b. Perma-White Mold and Mildew-Proof Exterior Paint.c. Perma-Guard Mold and Mildew-Proof Interior Sealer.d. WaterTite Mold and Mildew-Proof Waterproofing Paint (Solvent-Base).e. WaterTite LX Mold and Mildew-Proof Waterproofing Paint (Latex).

B. Perform work and submit manufacturer's required job registration and verification forms in accordance with manufacturer's Waterproofing Warranty Guidelines. Provide manufacturer's extended Waterproofing Guarantee on the following waterproofing products:1. WATERTITE LX (Latex) Mold and Mildew-Proof Waterproofing Paint: Manufacturer

warrants the product and performance as follows.a. Provide manufacturer's warranty that product will stop up to 20 psi water for 10

years from passing through the coating (interior or exterior) when applied according to label directions. Warranty does not apply to applications over pre-existing coatings.

2. WATERTITE (Solvent-based) Mold and Mildew-Proof Waterproofing Paint: Manufacturer warrants the product and performance as follows.a. Provide manufacturer's warranty that product will stop up to 34 psi from passing

through the coating (interior or exterior) when applied according to label directions. Product shall be backed by a lifetime guarantee to provide a waterproof finish when applied to bare masonry surfaces according to label directions except when leaks are due to settlement cracks or surface deterioration. Warranty does not apply to applications over pre-existing coatings.

1.10 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish extra paint materials from the same production run as the materials applied and in the quantities described below. Package with protective covering for storage and identify with labels describing contents. Deliver extra materials to Owner.

B. Quantity: Furnish Owner with an additional three percent, but not less than 1 gal (3.8 L) or 1 case, as appropriate, of each material and color applied.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Review product manufacturer's special instructions for surface preparation, application, temperature, re-coat times, and product limitations.

B. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

C. Ensure that surfaces to receive paint are dry immediately prior to application.

D. Ensure that moisture-retaining substrates to receive paint have moisture content within tolerances allowed by coating manufacturer. Where exceeding the following values, promptly notify Architect and obtain direction before beginning work.1. Concrete and Masonry: 13 percent. Allow new concrete to cure a minimum of 28

days.2. Exterior Wood: 17 percent.3. Interior Wood: 15 percent.4. Interior Finish Detail Woodwork, Including Trim, and Casework: 10 percent.5. Plaster and Gypsum: 15 percent.6. Concrete Slab-On-Grade: Perform calcium chloride test over 24 hour period or other

acceptable test to manufacturer. Verify acceptable moisture transmission and pH levels.

E. Examine surfaces to receive coatings for surface imperfections and contaminants that could impair performance or appearance of coatings, including but not limited to, loose primer, rust, scale, oil, grease, mildew, algae, or fungus, stains or marks, cracks, indentations, or abrasions.

F. Correct conditions that could impair performance or appearance of coatings in accordance with specified surface preparation procedures before proceeding with coating application.

G. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding. Commencement of work constitutes acceptance of conditions.

H. Coordination of Work: Review other Sections in which primers are provided to ensure compatibility of the total system for various substrates. On request, furnish information on characteristics of finish materials to ensure use of compatible primers.1. Notify Architect regarding anticipated problems when using the materials specified

over substrates primed by others.2. If a potential incompatibility of primers applied by others exists, obtain the following

from the primer Applicator before proceeding:a. Confirmation of primer's suitability for expected service conditions.b. Confirmation of primer's ability to be top coated with materials specified.

3.2 PREPARATION - GENERAL

A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to coating application.1. Remove dirt, grease, oil, mold & mildew, salt and chemical contaminants by washing

the surface with suitable cleaner. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to fully dry. All surfaces shall be dry at time of application.

2. Remove hardware and hardware accessories, plates, machined surfaces, lighting fixtures, and similar items already installed that are not to be painted. If removal is impractical or impossible because of size or weight of the item, provide surface-applied protection before surface preparation and painting.

3. After completing painting operations in each space or area, reinstall items removed using workers skilled in the trades involved.

4. Cleaning: Before applying paint or other surface treatments, clean substrates of substances that could impair bond of the various coatings. Remove oil and grease before cleaning.

5. Schedule cleaning and painting so dust and other contaminants from the cleaning process will not fall on wet, newly painted surfaces.

6. If excessive time has elapsed since the primer was applied, remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt and chemical contaminants by washing the surface with suitable cleaner. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow to fully dry. All surfaces shall be dry at time of application.

B. Do not start work until surfaces to be finished are in proper condition to produce finished surfaces of uniform, satisfactory appearance.

C. Stains and Marks: Remove completely, if possible, using materials and methods; recommended. by coating manufacturer; cover stains and marks which cannot be completely removed with isolating primer or sealer; recommended. by coating manufacturer to prevent bleed-through.

D. Remove or protect adjacent hardware, electrical equipment plates, mechanical grilles and louvers, lighting fixture trim, and other items not indicated to receive coatings.

E. Move or protect equipment and fixtures adjacent to surfaces indicated to receive coatings to allow application of coatings.

F. Protect adjacent surfaces not indicated to receive coatings.

G. Prepare surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's instructions for specified coatings and indicated materials, using only methods and materials; recommended. by coating manufacturer.

A. Aluminum: Remove all oil, grease, dirt, oxide and other foreign material by cleaning per SSPC-SP1, Solvent Cleaning.

B. Concrete Block and Cinder Block: Remove all loose mortar and foreign material. Surface must be free of laitance, concrete dust, dirt, form release agents, moisture curing membranes, loose cement, and hardeners. Concrete and mortar must be cured at least 30 days at 75 degrees F. The pH of the surface should be between 6 and 9, unless the products are designed to be used in high pH environments. On tilt-up and poured-in-place concrete, commercial detergents and abrasive blasting may be necessary to prepare the surface. Fill bug holes, air pockets, and other voids with a cement patching compound.1. Remove efflorescence and chalk. Do not paint surfaces if moisture content or

alkalinity of surfaces or mortar joints exceeds that permitted in manufacturer's written instructions.

C. Cementitious Substrates: Prepare concrete, brick, concrete masonry block, and cement plaster surfaces to be coated. Remove efflorescence, chalk, dust, dirt, grease, oils, and release agents. Roughen as required to remove glaze. If hardeners or sealers have been used to improve curing, use mechanical methods to prepare surfaces.1. Use abrasive blast-cleaning methods if recommended by coating manufacturer.2. Determine alkalinity and moisture content of surfaces by performing appropriate tests.

If surfaces are sufficiently alkaline to cause the finish paint to blister and burn, correct this condition before application. Do not coat surfaces if moisture content exceeds that permitted in manufacturer's written instructions.

3. Cracks and joints shall be sealed with hydraulic cement and/or manufacturer's recommended sealant.

D. Concrete, SSPC-SP13 or NACE 6: This standard gives requirements for surface preparation of concrete by mechanical, chemical, or thermal methods prior to the application of bonded protective coating or lining systems. The requirements of this standard are applicable to all types of cementitious surfaces including cast-in-place concrete floors and walls, precast slabs, masonry walls, and shotcrete surfaces. An acceptable prepared concrete surface should be free of contaminants, laitance, loosely adhering concrete, and dust, and should provide a sound, uniform substrate suitable for the application of protective coating or lining systems.

E. Cement Composition Siding/Panels: Remove all surface contamination by washing with an appropriate cleaner, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Existing peeled or checked paint should be scraped and sanded to a sound surface. Pressure clean, if needed, with a minimum of 2100 psi pressure to remove all dirt, dust, grease, oil, loose particles, laitance, foreign material, and peeling or defective coatings. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. The pH of the surface should be between 6 and 9, unless the products are designed to be used in high pH environments.

F. Copper and Stainless Steel: Remove all oil, grease, dirt, oxide and other foreign material by cleaning per SSPC-SP 2, Hand Tool Cleaning.

G. Previously Painted Surfaces: Patch all voids with the appropriate patching compounds (Ready Patch) or calking materials. Wash, scrape, sand and clean the surface to remove any chalk, dirt, grease, oil, wax, mildew, loose paint and other contaminants. Prime or spot prime with the appropriate primer for the substrate.

H. Drywall/Plaster Unfinished (General Areas): Allow new drywall or plaster to properly cure before application of primer and finish coats. Patch all voids with the appropriate patching compounds (Ready Patch) or calking materials. Wash, scrape, sand and clean the surface to remove any chalk, dirt, grease, oil, wax, mildew, loose paint and other contaminants. Prime or spot prime with appropriate primer for the substrate.

I. Drywall - Interior: Must be clean and dry. All nail heads must be set and spackled. Joints must be taped and covered with a joint compound. Spackled nail heads and tape joints must be sanded smooth and all dust removed prior to painting.

J. Galvanized Metal: Clean per SSPC-SP1 using detergent and water or a degreasing cleaner to remove greases and oils. Apply a test area, priming as required. Allow the coating to dry at least one week before testing. If adhesion is poor, Brush Blast per SSPC-SP7 is necessary to remove these treatments.

K. Stucco, Portland Cement Plaster and Gypsum Plaster: Must be allowed to dry thoroughly for at least 30 days before painting, unless the products are designed to be used in high pH environments. For interior applications, room must be ventilated while drying; in cold, damp weather, rooms must be heated. Damaged areas must be repaired with an appropriate patching material. Bare plaster must be cured and hard. Textured, soft, porous, or powdery plaster should be treated with a solution of 1 pint household vinegar to 1 gallon of water. Repeat until the surface is hard, rinse with clear water and allow to dry.

L. Steel: Structural, Plate, And Similar Items: Should be cleaned by one or more of the surface preparations described below. These methods are used throughout the world for describing methods for cleaning structural steel. Visual standards are available through the Society of Protective Coatings. A brief description of these standards together with numbers by which they can be specified follow.1. Solvent Cleaning, SSPC-SP1: Solvent cleaning is a method for removing all visible oil,

grease, soil, drawing and cutting compounds, and other soluble contaminants. Solvent cleaning does not remove rust or mill scale. Change rags and cleaning solution frequently so that deposits of oil and grease are not spread over additional areas in the cleaning process. Be sure to allow adequate ventilation.

2. Hand Tool Cleaning, SSPC-SP2: Hand Tool Cleaning removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, and other detrimental foreign matter. It is not intended that adherent mill scale, rust, and paint be removed by this process. Before hand tool cleaning, remove visible oil, grease, soluble welding residues, and salts by the methods outlined in SSPC-SP1.

3. Power Tool Cleaning, SSPC-SP3: Power Tool Cleaning removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, and other detrimental foreign matter. It is not intended that adherent mill scale, rust, and paint be removed by this process. Before power tool cleaning, remove visible oil, grease, soluble welding residues, and salts by the methods outlined in SSPC-SP1.

4. White Metal Blast Cleaning, SSPC-SP5 or NACE 1: A White Metal Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products, and other foreign matter. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP1 or other agreed upon methods.

5. Commercial Blast Cleaning, SSPC-SP6 or NACE 3: A Commercial Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products, and other foreign matter, except for staining. Staining shall be limited to no more than 33 percent of each square inch of surface area and may consist of light shadows, slight streaks, or minor discoloration caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale, or stains of previously applied paint. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP1 or other agreed upon methods.

6. Brush-Off Blast Cleaning, SSPC-SP7 or NACE 4: A Brush-Off Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, loose mill scale, loose rust, and loose paint. Tightly adherent mill scale, rust, and paint may remain on the surface. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP 1 or other agreed upon methods.

7. Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal, SSPC-SP11: Metallic surfaces that are prepared according to this specification, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxide corrosion products, and other foreign matter. Slight residues of rust and paint may be left in the lower portions of pits if the original surface is pitted. Prior to power tool surface preparation, remove visible deposits of oil or grease by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP1, Solvent Cleaning, or other agreed upon methods.

8. Near-White Blast Cleaning, SSPC-SP10 or NACE 2: A Near White Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products, and other foreign matter, except for staining. Staining shall be limited to no more than 5 percent of each square inch of surface area and may consist of light shadows, slight streaks, or minor discoloration caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale, or stains of previously applied paint. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP1 or other agreed upon methods.

9. High- and Ultra-High Pressure Water Jetting for Steel and Other Hard Materials: SSPC-SP12 or NACE 5: This standard provides requirements for the use of high- and ultra-high pressure water jetting to achieve various degrees of surface cleanliness. This standard is limited in scope to the use of water only without the addition of solid particles in the stream.

10. Water Blasting, SSPC-SP12/NACE No. 5: Removal of oil grease dirt, loose rust, loose mill scale, and loose paint by water at pressures of 2,000 to 2,500 psi at a flow of 4 to 14 gallons per minute.

M. Ferrous-Metal Substrates: Clean ungalvanized ferrous-metal surfaces that have not been shop coated; remove oil, grease, dirt, loose mill scale, and other foreign substances. Use solvent or mechanical cleaning methods that comply with SSPC recommendations.1. Blast-clean steel surfaces as recommended by coating manufacturer and according to

SSPC-SP 10.2. Treat bare and sandblasted or pickled clean metal with a metal treatment wash coat

before priming.3. Touch up bare areas and shop-applied prime coats that have been damaged. Wire

brush, solvent clean, and touch up with same primer as the shop coat.

N. Nonferrous-Metal Substrates: Clean nonferrous and galvanized surfaces according to manufacturer's written instructions for the type of service, metal substrate, and application required.1. Remove pretreatment from galvanized sheet metal fabricated from coil stock by

mechanical methods.

O. Existing Synthetic Stucco and Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS): Clean thoroughly by scrubbing with a warm, soapy water solution. Rinse thoroughly. Inspect surface for damage and repair in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Comply with manufacturer's requirements for removing stains and compatibility of overcoats.

P. Vinyl Siding, Architectural Plastics, and Fiberglass: Clean thoroughly by scrubbing with a warm, soapy water solution. Rinse thoroughly. Do not paint vinyl siding with any color darker than the original color, unless the product and color are designed for such use. Painting with darker colors may cause siding to warp.

Q. Wood Substrates: Clean surfaces of dirt, oil, and other foreign substances with scrapers, mineral spirits, and sandpaper, as required. Smoothly sand surfaces exposed to view and dust off.1. Scrape and clean small, dry, seasoned knots, and apply a thin coat of white shellac or

other recommended knot sealer, before applying primer.2. Immediately on delivery, prime edges, ends, faces, undersides, and backsides of

wood to be coated.

3. After priming, fill holes and imperfections in the finish surfaces with putty or plastic wood filler. Sand smooth when dried.

3.4 APPLICATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Provide surface with uniform appearance, free of drips, runs, sags and other imperfections.

B. Material Preparation: Carefully mix and prepare coating materials according to manufacturer's written instructions.1. Maintain containers used in mixing and applying coatings in a clean condition, free of

foreign materials and residue.2. Stir materials before applying to produce a mixture of uniform density. Stir as required

during application. Do not stir surface film into the material. Remove film and, if necessary, strain coating material before using.

3. Use only the type of thinners approved by manufacturer and only within recommended limits.

4. Tinting: Tint each undercoat a lighter shade to simplify identification of each coat when multiple coats of same material are applied. Tint undercoats to match the color of the finish coat, but provide sufficient differences in shade of undercoats to distinguish each separate coat.

C. General: Apply paint according to manufacturer's written instructions. Use applicators and techniques best suited for substrate and type of material being applied.

D. General: Apply high-performance coatings according to manufacturer's written instructions.1. Use applicators and techniques best suited for the material being applied.2. Do not apply high-performance coatings over dirt, rust, scale, grease, moisture,

scuffed surfaces, or conditions detrimental to forming a durable coating film.3. Coating surface treatments, and finishes are indicated in the coating system

descriptions.4. Provide finish coats compatible with primers used.5. The term "exposed surfaces" includes areas visible when permanent or built-in

fixtures, convector covers, grilles, covers for finned-tube radiation, and similar components are in place. Extend coatings in these areas, as required, to maintain system integrity and provide desired protection.

E. Application Procedures: Apply coatings by brush, roller, spray, or other applicators according to manufacturer's written instructions.1. The number of coats and film thickness required is the same regardless of application

method.2. Completed Work: Match approved Samples for color, texture, and coverage. Remove,

refinish, or recoat work that does not comply with specified requirements.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Owner reserves the right to invoke the following test procedure at any time and as often as Owner deems necessary during the period when paint is being applied:1. Owner will engage a qualified independent testing agency to sample paint material

being used. Samples of material delivered to Project will be taken, identified, sealed, and certified in the presence of Contractor.

2. Owner may direct Contractor to stop painting if test results show material being used does not comply with specified requirements. Contractor shall remove noncomplying paint from Project site, pay for testing, and repaint surfaces previously coated with the non complying paint. If necessary, Contractor may be required to remove non complying paint from previously painted surfaces if, on repainting with specified paint, the two coatings are incompatible.

3.6 CLEANING

A. After completing painting, clean glass and paint-spattered surfaces. Remove spattered paint by washing and scraping without scratching or damaging adjacent finished surfaces.

3.7 PROTECTION

A. Protect work of other trades, whether being painted or not, against damage from painting. Correct damage by cleaning, repairing or replacing, and repainting, as approved by Architect.

B. Provide "Wet Paint" signs to protect newly painted finishes. After completing painting operations, remove temporary protective wrappings provided by others to protect their work.

C. After work of other trades is complete, touch up and restore damaged or defaced painted surfaces.
