1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For manufacturer's product lines for aluminum column assembled from standard components.

1. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes.

2. Include rated capacities, furnished specialties, and accessories.

B. LEED Submittals:

1. Product Data for Credit MR 4: For products having recycled content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content. Include statement indicating cost for each product having recycled content.

C. Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation details for columns.

1. Include details of cuts, connections, splices, camber, holes, and other pertinent data.2. Indicate type, size, and length of bolts, distinguishing between shop and field bolts.3. Indicate special tolerances and erection requirements.

Retain "Samples" Paragraph below for single-stage submission of Samples. If retaining "Samples" Paragraph below, delete the “Samples for Initial Selection” and “Samples for Verification” that following below.

1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

A. Qualification Data: For manufacturer and Installer.

Requirements in first paragraph below are for test reports for products on which tests are performed either by independent testing agencies or by manufacturers in their own labs. Retain first option if testing is likely to be performed in manufacturer's facilities and witnessed by a qualified testing agency; retain second option if testing is performed by the testing agency.

B. Product Test Reports: For each <Insert product>, for tests performed by [manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency] [a qualified testing agency].

C. Sample Warranty: For manufacturer's warranty.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

Include in this article prerequisites, standards, limitations, and criteria that establish an overall level of quality for products and workmanship. Include only those quality-assurance provisions that affect all Work of this Section.

Quality assurance measures that take place only in the factory or shop should be specified in Part 2 – Products.

Quality assurance measures that take place only on the project site should be specified in Part 3 – Execution.

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: A column cover manufacturer who is a member in good standing with PCI and AAMA.

B. Installer’s Qualifications: A firm experienced in producing column covers similar to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance, as well as sufficient production capacity to produce required units.

C. Powder-Coating Applicator Qualifications: A firm experienced in successfully applying powder coatings of type indicated to metals of types indicated and that employs competent control personnel to conduct continuing, effective quality-control program to ensure compliance with requirements.

It is recommended that a mockup be provided to assure the desired appearance of the completed work, particularly if sealant is required to conceal joints within the column assembly. Coordinate with the Erection Article in Part 3 below.

D. Mockups: Build mockups to verify selections made under Sample submittals, to demonstrate aesthetic effects, and to set quality standards for fabrication and installation.

1. Build mockups of typical column covers.2. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract

Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations in writing.

Coordinate the subparagraph below with the requirements of Section 014000 "Quality Requirements." If that section specifically states that approved mockups may become part of the completed Work, delete the subparagraph below, otherwise retain this subparagraph.

3. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Use special care in handling to prevent twisting, warping, nicking, and other damage. Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep aluminum columns off ground and spaced by using pallets, dunnage, or other supports and spacers. Protect aluminum columns and packaged materials from corrosion and deterioration.

1.7 WARRANTY

Verify with Owner's counsel that warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

A. Manufacturer's Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of decorative aluminum columns that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

1. Warranty does not include the failures caused by the following:

a. Damage caused by faulty installation, or from improper application.b. Damage attributable to fire, violent storms, earthquake or other Acts of God,

accidents, vandalism, or other casualties, impact of objects, or exposure to atmospheric pollutants or conditions other than natural weather processes.

c. Damage or discoloration due to misuse, abuse, abrasion (including sand abrasion), and improper storage or to alteration of the material by paints, chemicals, or other substances not recommended for Decorative Aluminum Column Assemblies.

d. Any materials not supplied by decorative aluminum column manufacturer.e. Cost of installation or removal, freight, labor and similar costs.f. Any incidental or consequential damages.g. Installations where the atmosphere is influenced by bodies of salt water (or other

contaminant conditions) must adhere to the decorative aluminum column manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance guidelines.

Select the characteristics below that apply to the column style being specified. Characteristics are identified according to specific DSI Column Styles to assist with editing.

B. Round Fluted Aluminum Columns:

2.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Retain "Delegated Design" and "Structural Performance," paragraphs below if columns are load bearing and if the Contractor will be responsible for structural design of columns.

Verify division 01 section and title and verify that delegated design requirements are specified in that section before editing the paragraph below. Otherwise delete option.

A. Delegated Design: Engage a qualified professional engineer[, as defined in Section 014000 "Quality Requirements,"] to structurally design decorative aluminum columns.

Retain first option in “Structural Performance” paragraph below if consulting structural engineer indicates loading requirements on the Structural Drawings. Otherwise, retain the second option. In either case, verify and coordinate this information with the consulting structural engineer before editing this paragraph.

Contact DSI for load capacity for selected column design and required column length.

B. Structural Performance: Provide cold-formed steel framing capable of withstanding design loads within limits and under conditions indicated[ on drawings.] [ below:]

a. Load-Bearing Columns: Horizontal deflection of [1/240] [1/360] [1/600] [1/720] of the wall height.

3. Design columns to provide for movement of framing members located outside the insulated building envelope without damage or overstressing, connection failure, undue strain on fasteners and anchors, or other detrimental effects when subject to a maximum ambient temperature change of 120 deg F (67 deg C).

2.4 MATERIALS

A. Aluminum: Fabricate products from alloy and temper recommended by aluminum producer and finisher for type of use and finish indicated, and with strength and durability properties for each aluminum form.

1. Extruded Bars, Rods, Profiles, and Tubes: ASTM B 221 (ASTM B 221M).2. Extruded Structural Pipe and Tubes: ASTM B 429/B 429M.3. Structural Profiles: ASTM B 308/B 308M.4. Plate and Sheet: ASTM B 209 (ASTM B 209M).5. Castings: ASTM B 26/B 26M.

2.5 FABRICATION

A. General: Fabricate column assemblies to comply with requirements indicated for design, dimensions, member sizes and spacing, details, finish, and anchorage[, but not less than that required to support structural loads].

1. To the greatest extent possible, perform cutting, drilling, and punching in the shop and minimize the need for field adjustments.

B. Provide complete column assemblies, including metal clips, brackets, bearing plates, and other components necessary to support and anchor columns on supporting structure.

C. Cut, drill, and punch metals cleanly and accurately.

1. Cut, drill, or punch holes perpendicular to aluminum surfaces.2. Do not thermally cut, drill, or punch aluminum.3. Remove burrs and ease exposed edges to a radius of approximately 1/32 inch (1 mm)

unless otherwise indicated.4. Remove sharp or rough areas on exposed surfaces.5. Fabricate with exposed surfaces smooth, square, and free of surface blemishes.6. Fabricate with piece marks fully hidden in the completed structure or made with media

that permits full removal after erection.

D. Cut, reinforce, drill, and tap as indicated to receive finish hardware, screws, and similar items.

E. Holes: Provide holes required for securing other work to aluminum columns and for other work.

Retain cut options in paragraph below as required to suit project. Coordinate type of cut with type of columns used.

F. Linear Cut: Where indicated on the Drawings, provide full length [3/4] [Engaged] [Pilaster] [and] [Corner] [cut] [cuts]:

2.6 ALUMINUM FINISHES

Typically retain the AAMA 2604 option in the “Powder-Coat Finish” paragraph below. Retain the AAMA 2605 option where columns are in a corrosive environment or near the seashore where the air will have a high salt content.

A. Powder-Coat Finish: [AAMA 2604] [AAMA 2605] except with a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils (0.04 mm). Comply with coating manufacturer's written instructions for cleaning, conversion coating, and applying and baking finish.

1. Color and Gloss: [As indicated by manufacturer's designations] [Match Architect's sample] [As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range] <Insert color and gloss>.

B. Color[ and Gloss]: [As indicated by manufacturer's designations] [Match Architect's sample] [As selected by Architect from full range of industry colors[ and color densities]].

2.7 ACCESSORIES

Some accessory items are made from cast aluminum and others from extruded aluminum. In general, accessories made from extruded aluminum will be smoother with more precise features than cast accessories. Powder coat finishes also hold better and look better on extruded accessories.

A. Capitals: Manufacturer’s standard cast aluminum capital.

B. Bases: Manufacturer’s standard cast aluminum base.

Astragals may be used on smooth square columns, only, as a decorative collar band below the capital.

C. Astragals: Manufacturer’s standard aluminum decorative astragal with factory mitered and welded joints.

Mounting blocks may be used with 6 and 8 inch Recess style square columns, only.

D. Mounting Blocks: Manufacturer’s standard extruded aluminum.

E. Fasteners: Countersunk, flat head screws, finished to match framing system and fabricated from 300 series stainless steel.

F. Anchors: Three-way adjustable anchors with minimum adjustment of [1 inch (25 mm)] <Insert dimension> that accommodate fabrication and installation tolerances in material and finish compatible with adjoining materials and recommended by manufacturer.

Retain Sealant paragraph below if sealant is required to protect underlying building components from exposure to water or if required to conceal joints between column elements. Otherwise, this paragraph may be deleted.

Make sure sealant type selected will be compatible with and adjoining construction.

G. Sealants: [As recommended by manufacturer.] [Comply with requirements of Section 079200 " Joint Sealants."]

Colors available will depend on the type of sealant selected. Coordinate sealant requirements of this section with those of Section 079200 “Joint Sealants.”

Retain the VOC Content paragraph below if compliance with LEED-NC, LEED-CI, or LEED-CS Credit IEQ 4.1. is required.

2. VOC Content: VOC content of [250] <Insert value> g/L when applied inside the weatherproofing system.

Retain the VOC Testing paragraph below if compliance with LEED for Schools Credit IEQ 4.1 is required.

3. VOC Testing: Comply with the testing and product requirements of the California Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers" when sealants are applied inside the weatherproofing system.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates and conditions [, with Installer present,] for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.

B. [Prepare written report, endorsed by Installer, listing conditions detrimental to performance.].

C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Provide temporary shores, braces, and other supports during erection to keep column secure, plumb, and in alignment against temporary construction loads and loads equal in intensity to design loads. Remove temporary supports when permanent structure, connections, and bracing are in place unless otherwise indicated.

3.3 ERECTION

A. Fit exposed connections together to form tight joints.

B. Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing columns only where required. Set columns accurately in location, alignment, and elevation; measured from established lines and levels and free of rack.

1. Do not weld, cut, or abrade surfaces of columns components that are coated or finished after fabrication and that are intended for field connection by mechanical or other means without further cutting or fitting.

2. Do not use thermal cutting.

C. Control of Corrosion: Prevent galvanic action and other forms of corrosion by insulating metals and other materials from direct contact with incompatible materials.

1. Coat, with a heavy coat of bituminous paint, concealed surfaces of aluminum that are in contact with grout, concrete, masonry, wood, or dissimilar metals.

D. Adjust columns before anchoring to ensure alignments.

E. Fastening to In-Place Construction: Use anchorage devices and fasteners where necessary for securing columns and for properly transferring loads to in-place construction.

F. Sealant: Comply with joint-sealant manufacturer's written installation instructions [and with the requirements of Section 079200 “Joint Sealants”] for products and applications indicated.

Retain the Tooling subparagraph below if joint of the column assembly if sealant is required to conceal joints between column elements. It is recommended that a mockup be provided to assure the desired appearance of the completed work. Coordinate with the Quality Assurance Article in Part 1 above.

1. Tooling: Tool sealant to form a smooth, uninterrupted surface between adjoining surfaces to conceal joints in column assemble to the greatest extent possible.

3.4 ERECTION TOLERANCES

1. Set columns plumb within a tolerance of 1/16 inch in 3 feet (2 mm in 1 m).2. Align columns so variations from line do not exceed 1/4 inch in 12 feet (6 mm in 3.5 m).

3.5 CLEANING

3.6 PROTECTION

A. Protect finishes of decorative aluminum column assemblies from damage during construction period with temporary protective coverings approved by decorative aluminum column manufacturer. Remove protective coverings at time of Substantial Completion.
