    reading assignment and one hour of classroom discussion. The

    reading assignment provides the student background material

    concerning the lesson. The classroom discussion is a review of

    the student reading assignment, Supplementary Reading #1. Review

    INSTRUCTIONAL LEAD-IN: In previous instruction you have been

    given a overview of combat health service support and you have examined

    the first two echelons.

    Since the force of combat health support is from the rear, it isonly appropriate that we now examine the third through the fifth

    echelons of combat health support within a theater of operations, the

    corps/COMMZ and CONUS.

    SECTION III. PRESENTATION

    SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES:

    Introduction: This lesson further develops previous instruction

    presented on combat health support in echelons I and II, by examining

    in greater detail the combat health support provided by the corps/COMMZ

    and CONUS level of medical support.

    MEDICAL COMMAND

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area ofoperations of the medical command (MEDCOM)?

    INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Allow students to respond, ensure the points

    below are covered.

    DESCRIPTION -The MEDCOM is the senior medical command and

    control unit for Echelons Above Corps (EAC) medical units. It is

    a theater level headquarters commanded by a Major General,

    Medical Corps(MC).

    MISSION -Provides command and control, administrative

    assistance, technical supervision and consultative services for

    assigned and attached medical units in the theater of operations.

    AREA OF OPERATION -The Medical Command is located in the

    rear of the COMMZ, normally in proximity to the Theater Army

    Headquarters.

    MEDICAL BRIGADE (CZ)MEDICAL BRIGADE (COMMZ)

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area ofoperations of the Medical Brigade (MED BDE)?

    INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Allow for student response, ensure the

    following points are covered:

    DESCRIPTION - There are two types of Medical Brigades. The

    Medical Brigade (CZ) and the Medical Brigade (COMMZ). The MED BDE (CZ)

    is the primary command and control unit for the corps. The MED BDE

    (COMMZ) is a subordinate command and control unit for Echelons Above

    Corps (EAC) medical units. Both MED BDEs are commanded by a general

    officer (MC).

    MISSION -To provide command and control, administrative

    and technical supervision of all assigned and attached medical

    units.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS -The MED BDE (CZ) is normally locatedadjacent or in close proximity to the Corps Support Command(COSCOM) Headquarters in the Corps. The MED DDE (COMMZ) ispositioned in the COMMZ in a location that will allow it toprovide command and control of its subordinate units. Both MEDBDEs may collocate with one of their subordinate units forsupport.

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area of operation of

    the medical group?

    INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Allow for student response. Ensure the points

    DESCRIPTION -The Medical Group is the subordinate medical

    command and control (C2) unit in the Corps. The unit is commanded by a

    Colonel, Medical Service Corps (MSC).

    MISSION -To provide command, control, and administrative

    assistance to assigned and attached medical units.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS -The Medical Group operates in the Corps

    area and locates itself in a position to allow effective C2 of its

    subordinate units.

    AREA SUPPORT MEDICAL BATTALION

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area of operation for

    the Area Support Medical Battalion (ASMB)?

    DESCRIPTION -The ASMB provides first and second echelon health

    care for those non-divisional units without organic medical support.

    The ASMB is organized into a Battalion Headquarters, Support Company,

    and three Area Support Medical Companies.

    MISSION -To provide first and second echelon combat health

    support in its area of operations.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS -The ASMB operates throughout the Corps and

    COMMZ.EVACUATION BATTALION

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area of operation of

    the Evacuation Battalion?

    DESCRIPTION -The Evacuation Battalion is staffed and equipped

    to serve as the central manager for both air and ground evacuation

    assets within its area of operations.

    The battalion headquarters provides C2 for all assigned and attached

    ambulance companies. The battalion is a mix of Medical Companies Air

    Ambulance and Medical Companies Ground Ambulance along with a

    headquarters detachment.

    MISSION -To provide air and ground evacuation to all classes

    of patients within the theater of operations and to provide command and

    control for air and ground medical evacuation units within the theater

    of operations.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS -Elements of the battalion operatethroughout the theater.

    MOBILE ARMY SURGICAL HOSPITAL

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area of operation of

    the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH)?

    INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Allow for student response. Ensure the points

    below are covered.

    DESCRIPTION -The MASH is a 30 bed facility that can

    function independently, providing resuscitative surgery, AdvancedTrauma Life Support (ATLS) stabilization, preoperative and

    postoperative nursing care. The supportability of the MASH is enhanced

    by its capability to divide and operate as two separate surgical units;

    A hospital unit surgical forward (HUSF) and a hospital unit surgical

    main (HUSM).

    MISSION -Provide hospitalization for those non-

    transportable patients who require far forward surgical and/or medical

    treatment to stabilize them for further evacuation.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS -The MASH is deployed as far forward as

    tactically feasible. It can operate within the Divisions AO and can

    collocate with the Main Support Medical Company. The HUSF can be

    deployed as far forward as the Forward Support Medical Companies

    in the BSA.COMBAT SUPPORT HOSPITAL

    DESCRIPTION -A 296-bed CZ hospital that is equippedand staffed to provide treatment and stabilization for allclasses of patients within the Corps. The CSH consists of aHospital Unit Base (HUB) and a Hospital Unit Surgical (HUS). The

    unit is currently equipped with the Deployable Medical System(DEPMEDS).

    MISSION -Provides hospitalization for all categoriesof patients within the combat zone.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS The OSH is deployed in theCorps area normally from the Corps center to the Corps rear.

    FIELD HOSPITAL

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission and area of operationof the Field Hospital (ELD)?

    INSTRUCTOR NOTE: Allow students to respond. Ensure the pointsbelow are covered.

    DESCRIPTION -A 504-bed facility designed and staffedfor the treatment of return-to-duty (RTD) patients. The unitconsists of a HUB and a hospital unit holding (HUH) It is DEPMEDSequipped.

    MISSION -Provides hospitalization for generalclasses of RTD patients and to provide reconditioning,rehabilitation, and convalescent care services for patients whocan be returned to duty within the theater evacuation policy.

    AREA OF OPERATIONS -The FLD normally operates in theforward area of the COMMZ.

    GENERAL HOSPITAL

    QUESTION: What is the description, mission, and the area ofoperation of the General Hospital (GEN)?

    DESCRIPTION -A 476-bed, DEPMEDS facility equippedand staffed for the treatment and stabilization of all categoriesof non-return-to-duty (NRTD) patients. The unit is composed of aHUB, HUS and a Hospital Unit Medical (HUM).

    MISSION -Provides hospitalization for generalclasses of patients and to serve as the primary conduit for theevacuation of patients to CONUS or out of the theater.

    Hospitalization at level V is provided by military

    facilities and Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals, possibly

    overflowing into civilian hospitals using the National Disaster

    Medical System. This includes U.S. Army MEDDACS and MEDCENS.

    Medical Force 2000 graphic which represents the types of units.Ensure the symbols, as well as the locations are understood. See

    the last 2 pages of this LP for graphic and legend. SR #1 has

    SUMMARY: During the last several hours we have examined combat

    health support, from far forward to the CONUS rear. We have

    studied the missions, medical resources, and concepts of health

    care.

    Obviously, we cannot become experts on combat health

    support in a few hours, but hopefully we now have a better and

    broader perspective of how the AMEDD works.
