*CUTTING TIPMake speedy work of cutting hexagons. Fold the 51/2" strips lengthwise. Place the alignment line of the hexa-gon template on the folded edge of the fabric, then cut along the angled sides. If using a triangle ruler, place the ruler over the hexagon template to determine the correct alignment line. Temporarily mark the edge on the ruler, align the mark with the folded edge of the fabric, and cut along the angled edges of the ruler.
Note: All seam allowances are 1/4" unless otherwise specified. Press seam allowances open unless otherwise indicated.
Make the Diagonal Blocks Arrange 1 hexagon and two small
triangles as shown. Join the triangles to the hexagon along adjacent edges. Press the seams open.
Join 1 small triangle to the short straight edge of one half-hexagon as shown. Press the seam open. Make two hexagon/triangle units.
Arrange the hexagon unit from step 1 and the units from step 2 as shown. Join the units along adjacent edges and press the seams open.
Repeat steps 1–3 to make a total of 21 Diagonal Blocks.
Make the End Blocks Arrange 1 small triangle, 1 half-
hexagon, and 2 quilt center setting triangle as shown. Join the small triangle to the short straight edge of the half-hexagon. Press the seam open.
Join one setting triangle to the hexagon/triangle unit. Press the seam open.
Join the remaining setting triangle to the step 2 unit. Press the seam open. Make a total of 6 End Blocks.
Assemble the Quilt Center Referring to the Quilt Assembly
Diagram on page 4, arrange 7 Diagonal Blocks and 2 End Blocks in 1 vertical row. Join the blocks together along adjacent edges, and press the seams open. Make a total of 3 vertical rows.
Referring to the quilt photo, place one butterfly motif strip on each long side of the vertical rows from step 1. Join the strips to the rows along adja-cent edges to make the quilt center. Press the seams open.
Join the inner border strips end to end, using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Cut 2 strips, 11/2" x 421/2", for the top/bottom inner borders, and 2 strips, 11/2" x 483/4" for the side inner borders.
