2Viticulture Product Guide: Fungicides

Fungicides

Fungicides are essential tools for growers of grape vines to ensure a healthy high quality crop.

Powdery mildew, downy mildew and botrytis are the three most economically damaging diseases for grape growers. In recent times, over-use of some fungicides has also lead to the development of resistance.

Crop Care has a broad range of fungicides from many different fungicide groups which can be used by growers to control these important diseases while minimising the chance of developing resistance.

Get more out of every drop

Shirwet 600 is a non-ionic surfactant used with herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.

Safe to use

Soft on grape vine crops due to its unique formulation and low use rate. Reduces the number of spray droplets bouncing off leaves.

Stickability

Ensures the spray solution sticks to the target leaf and spreads out evenly.

Greater coverage

Enhances coverage of contact and protectant fungicides.

Performance

Maximises performance when concentrated spraying. Provides increased speed of activity, penetration and uptake of systemic pesticides.

Available in 20L and 5L packs

Rolls Royce for optimum product performanceSurfact is a multi-purpose adjuvant based on soyal phospholipids and propionic acid. It has the following key uses:

• Addition to herbicides to improve spreading and penetration

• Reduction of pH to reduce alkaline hydrolysis

• To improve uptake of foliar fertilisers

• To assist in droplet size management to partially reduce the number of fine droplets produced from hydrolic nozzles by air and ground.

Available in 1000L, 110L and 20L packs

Wetters and Adjuvants

Adjuvants and wetters can make a huge difference to the efficacy of crop protection products due to either improved wetting or spreading, improved penetration or protection from alkaline hydrolysis. Maximise the efficacy of your crop protection products by incorporating them when recommended on individual product labels.

First choice for optimum product performancePrimabuff is a multi-purpose adjuvant containing a pH indicator for use as an acidifying, buffering, penetrating, wetting, spreading and compatibility aid. It can greatly improve the performance of certain crop protection chemicals especially those susceptible to breakdown in alkaline conditions ie. Captan 900 and Saboteur. It contains nonoxinol 9 and phosphoric acid derivatives.

pH indication

Addition of Primabuff to the spray tank will acidify the water which will turn a pink-red colour once the optimum pH range is reached.

Wetting/spreading/penetrationAutomatically reduces the surface tension of the spray mixture allowing the spray droplets to flatten and spread, giving greater coverage and efficacy. Built-in penetrator moves the pesticide through the waxy cuticle ensuring better performance.

Complexes harmful salts that are detrimental to the performance of crop protection products

Compatibility aidPrimabuff allows various spray combinations eliminating additional sprays and helping to save costs.

Available in a 5L pack

Managing glyphosate-resistant annual ryegrass in vineyardsDisappointing vineyard weed control is a major concern for many wine-grape growers, and is linked to a growing incidence of glyphosate resistance – especially in annual ryegrass.

The Australian Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group have confirmed glyphosate resistant ryegrass across 25 sites in vineyards in South Australia and Western Australia.

Resistance is believed to be even more widespread in South Australia’s major grape-growing regions, including Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, and the Barossa Valley. Margaret River, Great Southern and Manjimup in WA also have their share of glyphosate resistance.

Under-vine weed control in vineyards across Australia has depended heavily on glyphosate herbicide, which, until recently, has provided excellent and cost-efficient weed control. However, increasing numbers of growers are finding that glyphosate no longer effectively controls annual ryegrass.

All cases of glyphosate-resistant weeds confirmed to date share three common factors:

• Intensive (year to year) use of glyphosate

• Lack of rotation with other herbicide modes of action

• Little or no tillage following glyphosate application, and a lack of other non-herbicide management practices.

How resistance developsA small number of weed plants may be naturally resistant to a herbicide, surviving an application, and setting seed. With repeated use of the same herbicide, susceptible plants are killed but resistant plants continue to survive and become an increasing proportion of the weed population.

Signs of glyphosate resistance?Growers will notice that a scattering of single plants or patches of plants will survive a glyphosate application. Resistant plants might initially appear to be affected by the spray, but recover after a few weeks. Early and rapid control of these patches will prevent them from setting seed and spreading the resistance problem further.

If you suspect herbicide resistance, testing of surviving weeds is advised.

Mode-of-action mattersAustralia was the first country to classify herbicides in groups, according to their mode-of-action (indicated by a letter code on the product label), and to reflect the resistance risk. Glyphosate is represented in Group M.

Key aspects of an effective strategy to control resistant ryegrass are:

• Rotate herbicides from different mode-of-action groups

• Minimise the potential of resistant annual ryegrass to set seed set by non chemical methods.

Successful control of herbicide resistant ryegrassIn 2010, herbicide options for controlling glyphosate resistant ryegrass were investigated in trials in Barossa Valley and Coonawarra vineyards.

Effective control of glyphosate resistant annual ryegrass was obtained with Alliance, and with a combination of Shirquat plus Romper.

Romper provided effective pre-emergent control of resistant ryegrass, with continued control for 3 to 4 months after application.

Control of other key vineyard weeds was assessed at the same time, with Alliance providing good control of capeweed, prickly lettuce, sowthistle and medic, as well as resistant ryegrass.

Further information on these important herbicides follows.

Weeds can’t resist

When it comes to rapid control of hard to kill weeds, you can’t go past Alliance.

Unique dual mode of action

Group Q (amitrole) and Group L (paraquat) combine to provide an alternative to glyphosate with noticeably different benefits to Spray Seed®.

Controls glyphosate resistant annual ryegrass.

Rapid speed of controlEnsures minimum crop competition for water and nutrients and maximum crop yield response. Quicker than glyphosate. Symptoms may take longer to appear than with conventional paraquat products but longer term weed control is usually better.

Image 12: Adult African black beetles

Image 13: Amulet Cue-Lure attracting male fruit flies

Insecticides and miticides are essential tools for grape vine growers as these pests can have a devastating effect on the yield and quality of grapes.

Light brown apple moth is thought to have the greatest economic impact followed by garden weevil, phylloxera, mealybugs and scale and trunk boring insects. Fruit fly is a key pest in certain regions and is becoming more wide-spread. Effective control is critical for any fruit destined for export markets. Crop Care has a range of broad spectrum and highly selective insecticides that can assist growers to control all of these key pests.

No fly zoneAmulet Cue-Lure fruit fly stations are designed to attract and kill male Queensland fruit fly (QFF) and lesser fruit fly. The individual stations contain the active fipronil and a fruit fly pheromone attractant. Because fipronil is slow acting, males have been shown to transfer lethal quantities of fipronil to females.

For best results

Treatment should commence at least 5 to 8 weeks prior to reaching a stage of fruit susceptibility to fruit fly attack. To maximize control of female fruit flies protein bait sprays of autolysized yeast plus a registered insecticide such as Hy-Mal should be used.

Unique simple to use technologyAmulet Cue-Lure bait stations are individual stations which are attached to vines using a simple twist tie. One station lasts for up to 3 months.

Safety to users and environment

As the product contains only minute amounts of fipronil with a pheremone developed to attract QFF is very safe to both the user and the environment.

Unique suSCon technology provides up to two years control of soil pests

suSCon Green, based on the active chlorpyrifos, is a unique sustained control technology which provides up to two years protection to grape vine rootlings from African black beetle.

African black beetle feeds on the trunks and roots of young vines just below the soil level and damage can be severe enough to cause death of the rootlings.

For Best Results

Apply to the soil surface in a 15-20cm radius around vines immediately after transplanting and incorporate to a soil depth of 2-4cm.

Safety

Due to the fact that the active is slowly released from the suSCon granule there is reduced potential for dermal toxicity to users.

Use in IPM Systems.

Snail Baits

Snails and slugs can cause serious damage to grape vines. In autumn rainfall will trigger activity and breeding.

Autumn is one of the key time periods to apply a snail bait before breeding and egg laying begins. Snails start egg laying in the winter and the juveniles hatch in the spring. If rainfall occurs they will become active and start to move up in to the vines and start feeding. Application of a snail bait before they migrate up in to the vines is another critical stage for application of a snail bait to gain effective control. Crop Care has two very effective products for control of snails and slugs in grapevines, each with its own unique benefits.

SlugOut is a premium granular bait formulation of metaldehyde which contains an edible outer coating. It provides excellent control of slugs and snails and is particularly rain resistant. Its granular formulation does not absorb water. No breakdown after 60mm of rain.

Excellent coverage

Smaller baits provide better coverage per square metre compared to other available products which increases the chance of slugs and snails coming in to contact with the bait.
