Salt for the Weak
Ever feel like your faith was being tested? Whenever I read the account of Abraham being called to sacrifice his son Isaac, I think “what was he thinking!?” Here is an old guy, who was granted an only son
and was promised to become the “father of a multitude of nations.” Now he is tasked by God with a horrible request—sacrifice your son, “your only son.” And so Abraham, while seemingly without any emotion, prepares to carry out the deed. Only in the final moments is he stopped by an angel. This was a test indeed. There are times when we think our faith is being tested (hopefully not like Abraham), but tested nonetheless. These readings for the second Sunday of Lent encourage deep faith and trust in God. How have you met your tests? Have they strengthened or weakened your faith? May your “Rending, Lending and Mending” serve to deepen your dependence and devotion to the God who loves you first.
For Your Reflection
* Can you recall a time when you felt God called you? What was it about?
* Can you imagine how Abraham felt when he realized that God was asking him to sacrifice his only son? Can you describe it? Can you relate to it?
* If God is for us who can be against us?” What does this line mean to you? Do you believe it? Why/why not? In what ways would our world/would my life be different if we really lived this message? What prevents it?
* “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” This is a tremendous statement about the relationship between Jesus and God the Father. In what ways do you listen to Jesus? In what ways is listening to Him difficult? Why?

RENDING… This weekend we offer our PARKING LOT RECONCILIATION. This is an extraordinary
opportunity to receive absolution. Normally we celebrate individually with the priest with a more
personal experience with the opportunity for a bit of spiritual direction. The Church offers this option
especially in trying times, such as our COVID-19 experience. A reminder that those in the state of
serious (mortal) sin should come to individual confession within the year or next reception of the sacrament. Not only are we reconciled to God but also to the Church, who represents the Body of
Christ here on earth. More detailed Examination of Conscience sheets are available in the back of all
Pastorate churches, as well as online. It is in taking some quiet time, with the aid of questions, which
helps us to look at our “thoughts, words and deeds” in a prayerful way. This prayerful preparation gives us insights into ourselves and our actions that’s not
normally possible in our day-to-day jam-packed lives. For senior citizens it can also be a time of
great consolation as you reflect on the landscape of your lives and seeing all you have for which to be
grateful. Make every effort this Lent 2021 to celebrate Reconciliation at one of the parishes, or at individual times scheduled in the bulletin. God bless
your Lenten journey!
IRA Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) are again mandatory for IRA account holders 72 years of age and older (however it is still 70 ½ for those born before (7/1/49) in 2021. Giving via a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) through an IRA is a fantastic way for donors to contribute to the charities they support. Giving in this way, they can avoid paying federal income tax on distributions to a qualified charity, such as your parish. This is generally more advantageous to donors than giving cash, as donors do receive a tax benefit no matter if they itemize their deductions or not. Please contact your tax preparer for more information.
IvaNell Dinan, a parishioner St. Mark, is celebrating a very special occasion on March 11—It is her 100th Birthday!!! Help make IvaNell ’s day extra special by sending her birthday greetings at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, 513 S. Bell St., Edgewood, IA 52042. God Bless You on Your Special Day IvaNell!
How are you at evangelizing? For this season of Lent, try your hand and heart at evangelization by: * Inviting/bringing someone to daily or
weekend Mass. * If someone is struggling, ask if you could pray for
them (and do it!). * Pick up some missals/hymnals at Church and
take them to someone. * Gather up some Lenten prayer cards and pass
them out to anyone and everyone! * Watch the mid-week check-in online with
someone new. * Be a disciple! Be an instrument.

FRIDAYS of LENT… In former times, abstaining from meat was a tremendous sacrifice when people had less options for food choices and many ate only one meal a day due to the hardships of work. The idea was to unite ourselves to the sacrifice and suffering of Christ as a way of prayerful imitation. Today our sacrifices need to be much more intentional… Parish fish fry events or going out to eat a an all you can eat lobster boil is really not a sacrifice. Yet it is our intention, our mind-set which is important. It’s wonderful that our local parishes have these food events: They bring community together, help support our parish ministries, get people out of the house, and of course HAVE GREAT FOOD! All this is to say—keep your head in the game as much as your stomach. Remember to abstain from meat, and also shortcuts. And intentional self-sacrificing that we offer unites us to Jesus and draws us more deeply into his heart.
Have you ever made a “Holy Hour?” Visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament are a tremendously underutilized devotion. Stopping in to any Catholic church to pray before the Tabernacle is a special way of inviting and adoring Jesus in the midst of your week. We stop in to a friend or relative and say “I just wanted to stop in and say “Hi!” Why not do the same thing to your Savior? Most of our Emmaus parishes offer a Holy Hour each week. What is it? What do I do?
Simply come and place yourself in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord. It might be the only time you are silent (and awake!) during the day. Be attentive to your thoughts and feelings and ask Jesus to give you peace and calm. This is a great time to pray with Scripture, using the passage listed in the bulletin each week—possibly preparing the Gospel for the upcoming Sunday. Other spiritual or devotional reading is also appropriate, and it’s always great to pray the Rosary. We are so blessed to have Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament in our Churches— they are never empty, and we are never alone. Take the time. Make the time. See the weekly Liturgy and Activity Schedule for weekly Adoration Schedule.
The Knights of Columbus is holding another “Virtual Benefits Night” this spring. It will feature Tom Hegna, their “retirement income expert,” whose topic will be “Paychecks and Playchecks.” It will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 15 7:00 p.m. on ZOOM. To register, click on https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYtcuivpzovGdEvEt_HuHzs44AunE5inpCG or contact our Knights of Columbus insurance advisor Walter Witt (563-419-0400 or [email protected].
Reconciliation Preparation—A fruitful celebration of Confession (Reconciliation) centers on examining your conscience. Hard to do alone, we have placed examination sheets in the back of every church for you to take and spend some reflection time with as you prepare for either our “Parking Lot” reconciliation
services, or the opportunities that are scheduled during the week. A thoughtful examination of conscience will surface patterns and areas to take to the Lord for healing and insight. This is one of the meanings of “Rending” your heart. Develop true sorrow for your failings and ask Jesus for the strength to make needed changes in your life. His divine mercy will free you and strengthen you. Pick up your EXAMINATION of CONSCIENCE SHEET today.

Sacred Heart, Volga Sunday Eucharist Celebration
Second & fourth Sundays of month—8:00 a.m.
Lent is a time for us to change our lives and grow in holiness. Through the three pillars of Lent—fasting (giving up), almsgiving (giving to others) and prayer, we endeavor to develop a closer relationship to God. Each week, write down your fasting, giving and prayers. Place your sacrifices into the jars in our Lenten garden and watch how it grows over the next 40 days. Here are some ideas for each of the pillars. Let's grow together. Prayer—Participate in one of our small group discussions; say a rosary daily; participate in weekly Stations of the Cross; pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet; read a Bible story; learn a new prayer Fasting—Fast from electronics; fast from sweets; fast from snacking between meals; fast from TV; fast from complaining; do things the first time you are asked; skip a meal today; drink only water Giving—Choose one toy to donate; donate clothing; collect change to give to charity; donate extra to your parish this week; donate to food pantry; write a kind note to someone; help at one of the many church events
For the week of February 20, we light the candles for Bernadette Unterberger, as requested by Ken and Fran Zichal.
Thank You to Arlys Fitzgerald for her many years of serving as St. Joseph Ministry Card chair. Many parishioners received cards that were sent by Arlys. We also want to thank Arlys for continuing to help with bulletin inserts, something she has also done for many years and is continuing to do.
The St. Joseph Cemetery Commission needs commission members and a maintenance person. If you are interested in the planning, record keeping and administrative work related to keeping our parish cemetery and the grounds and the records in good condition, consider becoming a Cemetery Commission member; contact Mike Rentschler (563-880-1316). The Cemetery Commission also needs a lawn maintenance person for the coming mowing season. The person must be a self-starter, taking pride in their work and of a job well done. Responsibilities include the maintenance of an assigned area in the cemetery, working about 150 hours during the mowing season. Contact Todd Lenth (563-880-8115) for more information.
World Day of Prayer 2021 is Friday, March 5. The First Congregational Church is hosting this year, but with COVID-19 they are canceling the in-person program. The Vanuatu women invite us to focus on the Bible story in Matthew 7:24-27—“Build on a strong foundation.” Choosing the land on which to build the house is an important decision for people in Vanuatu, considering the terrain and the climate are crucial in a tropical archipelago located in the South Pacific Ocean prone to earthquakes, cyclones, volcanic eruptions and rising sea levels. World Day of Prayer’s motto is “Informed prayer leads to prayerful action.” Let us walk in faith and prayerful action.
Parish Life invites you to make a donation to provide flowers to residents at Elkader Care Center and Scenic Acres during March. Donations may be dropped off at the Parish Center, put in an envelope marked “flowers” and dropped in the collection, or taken to Elkader Floral Shop. If you have some clean vases for this project, drop them off at the Parish Center. Donations are due by March 5.
