Dear friends,

As we continue our Lenten journey, I am overjoyed to announce to you that Fr. Paul Nicholson will be returning to St. Rose of Lima to lead us in a Lenten Mission entitled “Ocean of Mercy.” What great theme for this Year of Mercy. We all are in need of God’s great mercy.

This Ocean of Mercy Mission will run from Sunday, February 28, 2016 (Fr. Paul Nicholson will preach all the English Masses and begin the Lenten Mission that Sunday evening) until Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

For those who don’t know, Fr. Paul Nicholson gave our Parish Advent Mission in 2015. People were so moved by his words. The Church was packed for four straight evenings. People begged me to have him return. Fr. Paul’s schedule was so busy that this is the first time he was available. I am delighted to have Fr. Nicholson join us again.

I know that it is difficult for many of you to go on a retreat elsewhere. That is why the parish has arranged this retreat for you. So, be sure to mark your calendars and reserve those four evenings. Also invite family members and friends to join us. Not only will you be inspired by what you will hear, but I also believe that these evenings of reflection and prayer will change your lives and our parish. May God bless you!

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Joseph Shea

APOCALYPTIC LITERATURE

MORNING BIBLE STUDY

Why are some RCIA participants dismissed in the middle of the Mass?

This Sunday, at one of the morning Masses, those adults and children preparing to be baptized into the Catholic Church, and those preparing for full communion will be dismissed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. This will continue each Sunday until Easter when, at the Easter Vigil, those who are ready will join us at the Table of the Eucharist for the first time. The parish is not sending them out because they are somehow “unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the table of the Eucharist, Mother Church still has an obligation to feed those who have entered into a relationship with her through the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming which was celebrated recently. God’s Word is their only food during this period. Instead, the participants depart from the Mass with one or more RCIA team members, to discuss the Mass readings for that Sunday and to experience more fully the impact of the Scriptures in their lives. This time is known as “Reflection on the Word.”

Inquiry Sessions for anyone considering becoming Catholic can join us at 7:30 pm in Room 10 of the school. If you are unbaptized, baptized in another faith denomination or are baptized Catholic and need both the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, we invite you to join us. For information, please call Julia Dobrucki at 915-4625.

First Sunday of Lent

This Lent, we have a great opportunity for our Parish- a free program called “Best Lent Ever”. This program works with Matthew Kelly’s book “Rediscover Jesus” which is being handed out today, this first Sunday

of Lent. All you have to do is sign up at DynamicCatholic.com/Lent. Each day you’ll get an inspirational email with a short video featuring Matthew Kelly and a member of the Dynamic Catholic Team. Throughout Lent, they will guide you through each of the 40 chapters and share simple ways to bring Jesus into your everyday life. Let’s do something life-changing this Lent. Let’s take a 40-day spiritual journey to encounter Jesus in a deeply personal way.

Parish Mission Fr. Paul Nicholson will be returning to St Rose

of Lima on February 28, 2016 to present a 4

Day Lenten Mission. Please mark your calendars

and plan on attending each evening.

The Thursday evening Bible Study has completed the class on First Corinthians. We will break for Lent to allow you the opportunity to attend the University Se-ries. Another yet to be determined study will start on April 7th. For more information or to register for the study, please contact Dr. Neil Fanning, DDS, facilita-tor, at: [email protected]

RESPECT LIFE

Keeping Kids Safe After School You can help keep your children safe by knowing where they spend their time after school. Get to know the adults who show up at the various locations in the community where children gather and where they play together. Be wary of any adult who seems more interested in creating a relationship with a child than with other adults. Pay attention when an adult seems to single out a child for a relationship or for special attention. Warning signs include treats, gifts, vacations, or other special favors offered only to one specific child. For more information, please call the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children office: (213) 637-7227. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

DID YOU KNOW? SABIA USTED?

Farewell Fr. Jim!

All good things must come to end. After six wonderful years here at St. Rose of Lima, Fr. Jim will be retiring and moving to Arizona.

We will miss his kindness, wisdom and experience, but most of all, we will miss the tremendous Catholic example he has been for us.

We wish for him the happiest of retirement!

Please join us as we say goodbye to him on Sunday, March 13, 2016.

There will be a complimentary continental breakfast in his honor after the 7:00am Mass. After breakfast, Fr. Jim will celebrate his last Mass here at St. Rose of Lima at 9:00am.

In addition, immediately following the 9:00am Mass we are having a reception and meal served from Alexis Greek and Portuguese Restaurant in the parish hall. Proceeds from this event will be given to Fr. Jim to aid in his retirement. Due to limited seating space, only 150 tickets will be available for the reception at $25.00 each. To reserve your tickets please contact Cliff & Paula Wirtz at (805)208-8970.

Reserved tickets will be available for pick up next Sunday, February 28th after the morning Masses. Any un-reserved tickets will be available for purchase on a first come first serve basis after Mass.

While your presence is the best gift of all, if you are unable to join us, please feel free to mail or deliver any cards or monetary gifts you wish to give him for his retirement, directly to the parish office.

Congratulations on your years of good service Father. May you enjoy the rest of the journey that God has planned for you!
