St. Patrick Church

Lent: A Season of Generous Giving

Last December I was privileged to include in the parish bulletin the annual report on the finances of St. Patrick Church. As reported in the financial statement, the parish is running a slight deficit in our budgeted Sunday offering. The Sunday offering is the largest source of income for the church. I am grateful that Christmas and Easter collections as well as a concerted effort by staff members to reduce expenses is helping to mitigate the Sunday shortfall; however, deferring expenses is not a long-term solution.

Throughout the past three years there has been a bit of change within the parish and school community as we are repaving the foundation with support to our parish mission that includes welcomes for new parishioners, preparation of our youth and RCIA candidates to celebrate the sacraments, and new programs/activities so our parish community can continue to grow in their Catholic Identity. We pray for and keep in touch with our homebound parishioners and reach out to the less fortunate through acts of friend-ship and financial aid. We also support our local food pantries as well as our parish partnership with Our Lady of Victories in Pater-son. We are making improvements to our buildings/grounds in order to keep the facilities safe and accessible to all. In doing so we hold true to our mission.

Much needed maintenance took place in the church, office complex, priest residence, and school during these past three years that includes painting, carpeting, air conditioning, and a new science lab. The priest residence was also given a facelift with new flooring in the kitchen and a renovation of the guest bathroom. These facelifts within the complex were due to the generosity of parish appeals, rebates from the Partners in Faith and Bishop’s Annual Appeal campaigns, and your continued generosity in donating to the Building and Maintenance fund. The foundation is laid, yet each of us has been called to be a witness beyond the walls of our facility. Despite these positive changes, St. Patrick Church is faced with an ongoing financial challenge that must be addressed. The Sunday offertory has decreased by more than $220,000 over a six year timespan. As a result, our parish finance council must con-front this concern by moving forward with a concerted effort to increase the Sunday offertory collection which allows the parish to continue in its mission without operating at a deficit. I know and realize that much has already been asked of you; and some families and individuals are already experiencing difficult financial times; however, I am counting on the many who are able to make sacrifices and increase their weekly offering.

This weekend we bring to light “Commitment Weekend.” Our goal through this program is to substantially increase our regu-lar offertory contributions. Other parishes that have conducted similar programs have seen their offertory increase between 20% - 40%. In that the contents of a special brochure have been sent to most, please take time to review your weekly offertory gift to the parish with consideration of increasing the percentage of the gift. Some of you may also wish to consider Online Giving, which pro-vides options to set up your own contributions, change your contributions at any time, take away the need to write checks, or make up missed contributions. In giving online either a credit card or debit card may be used. For more information, visit our website at http://st-pats.org/ and click on the “Give Online” link.

I thank you for your support through your weekly Sunday offering, and am indebted to you for your generosity. During these

weeks of Lent please be aware that your willingness to give brings joy to my heart, and is a true blessing for St. Patrick Church. With countless volunteers serving in the mission of our parish, the financial support of so many longtime and new parishioners renders confidence in future offertory collections. I as well as the entire staff at St. Patrick Church look forward with the ongoing desire to serve the spiritual, social and service needs of all parishioners.

In Christ’s Love, Fr. Bob

SAINT PATRICK SCHOOL

MUSIC MINISTRY

Singing and Silence in Lent

During Lent, we make an effort to simplify our lives in order to be closer to God. Many of us make an effort to do without something we usually have. In a similar way, our masses will be simplified with less music. By seeking silence and limiting music and other sound, we limit external stimuli to find ourselves more alone with our thoughts and more alone with our God.

Starting on Ash Wednesday, our masses will have no recessional hymn and no postlude. Instead, we will seek sacred silence at the end of mass. If you miss the music, you might like to think about this: silences called “rests” are an important part of music. In fact, some music philosophers have pointed out that a desig-nated period of silence can be considered a form of abstract “music.” Rather than notes, you have natural sounds you might not otherwise hear.

The other parts of mass during Lent will be expressed with beau-tiful Lenten songs, with texts that reflect on Jesus and the liturgy, and melodies that are meditative, speaking to our inner selves. When we all unite our voices in the melodies, we connect our inner selves with each other and with God.

If we focus on prayer during the silence after mass, we might feel the closeness with God. If you are a music lover, you might con-sider the silence to be a form of music. And, if we listen carefully to the silence, we might just imagine that we can hear our pray-ers.

Have a blessed Lent, Maggie Hanson, Music Minister

St. Patrick School participated for the first time in the Junior Mod-

el UN event sponsored by the NJ Consortium for the Gifted and

Talented and hosted by Drew University. Eighth graders Caitlin

Kelly, Alex Jancewicz, and Christian Rosowicz participated as

Israel debating the education of women. Mary Kate Vowells,

Maddie Morton, and Charlotte Hamilton competed as South Ko-

rea discussing nuclear proliferation. Under the direction of faculty

members, Miss Auriema and Miss Dickinson, both teams worked

extremely hard and won awards within their committees. Israel

was awarded Best Delegation (1st place). South Korea was

awarded Outstanding Delegation (2nd place). Congratulations to

both teams on a job well done!

In observance of Dental Health Month, the first grade has been

learning about their teeth and how to care for them. We began

with an informative visit from Dr. Farrell, read several books, and

conducted a STEM investigation to see how different liquids af-

fect our teeth. Using eggs, which also contain calcium, we made

predictions and left them in water, milk, soda, and fruit juice for a

day. The students observed the results firsthand, and decided to

stay away from sugary drinks! We ended by practicing “How To

Writing”, listing the proper steps for brushing our teeth.

It is Lent. Are you forming your children in

good liturgical practices? Parents who want to raise children

who participate in mass work hard to make the liturgy mean-

ingful.

They talk about the Mass with their children before they

go.

They whisper explanations during key parts of the liturgy.

They discuss the homily after Mass.

They play their favorite church songs on their MP3 players.

They search for the best suited service-Our 9 am is a mass

with Children’s Liturgy of the Word and has a children’s choir.

Formation does not end with 8th grade-the Sunday 5 pm

mass has music that appeals to the high school youth.

As part of your Lenten prayer practice consider attending the meditation group meetings on Monday nights at 7 pm. The group teaches and practices a form of contemplative prayer, which the Catholic Catechism describes in this way : "Contemplative prayer is the simplest expression of the mystery of prayer. It is a gift, a grace; it can be accepted only in humility and poverty. Contem-plative prayer is a covenant relationship established by God with-in our hearts". During Lent the meditation group will meet in the cry room in the Church Mondays at 7 pm.
