FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora I had at least four events to attend to last Saturday, be-sides our regular masses at the parish (and watching the 49ers’ game). There was a “Walk for Peace” sponsored by the Archdi-

ocese to pray for peace and to pray for the victims of violence. It was a walk from St. Anthony Church that ended with a concelebrated mass at Mission Dolores Basilica. Then there was the annual basket-ball tournament between our Holy Name School and St. Cecilia’s. The whole day affair was held at St. Cecilia’s. Then a friend from St Brendan’s asked me to watch his kids play against our basketball team here at our gym. I told my friend that I had to go to a mass at St. Patrick’s Church for the celebra-tion of the feast of Santo Nino, which was also a yearly event at St. Patrick’s. It would have been a very busy day for me but I ended up not going to anything. I decided to cancel the Walk for Peace event thinking I had so much to do. But after I cancelled the walk, I must completely have forgotten about the rest of the ac-tivities that I would have been able to attend. Have you experienced something like that? Like you go out shopping and you see a lot of choic-es and you ended up buying nothing. Sometimes you are either busy doing everything or busy doing nothing. With the resignation of Mr. Tony Eiras, our former Music Director, I have been bouncing back and forth, doing the music for the masses, then do-ing confession and of course, saying masses. Again, we thank Mr. Eiras for his many years of ser-vice here at our church. He is still working for the school, so we will still see him every now and then. Before we get someone to take the place of Mr. Eiras, we would like to discover first the gifts and talents we have in the community, so we can have a better judgment on how to restructure our music ministry. So, if you know how to sing or play a musical instrument, let us know, and join our music team. I also ask you to be patient during this time of transition. Restructuring our church music may in-volve interviewing people and hiring someone new. Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Re-sources Person asked a young engineer who was fresh out of MIT, "What starting salary were you thinking about?" The Engineer said, "In the neigh-borhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the ben-efits package." Continued next column….

FAZtor’s Notes continued... The interviewer said, "Well, what would you

say to a package of 5 weeks vacation, 14 paid holi-days, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years - say, a red Corvette?" The Engineer sat up straight and said, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replied, "Yeah, but you started it."

“Today I am happy not because everything I see is good but because I see the good side of eve-rything.”

Dear Sr. Stella & Holy Name Church, We are the Seniors of the Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Center, and we wish to thank you with all our hearts for the Christmas gifts you gave us.’ They were so special because you were kind and gracious in asking us for our personal preferences. Wow!!! We received just what we

wanted—a Timex watch, clock radios, a nice, warm jack-et, a beautiful pink sparkly purse with a mirror (sigh…), a lunch box, t-shirts, beauty products, etc. If indeed there are angels here on earth, count yourselves among them, so again, thank you for all your hard work and generosity, your caring and good deeds, but most of all—thank you for being YOU—blessings each and every one. Love and Hugs, The Seniors and Pat

Dear Holy Name Parish, Your gifts at our Holiday party were the highlight of the Christmas Season for us. Thank you for your ongoing kindness and generosity! Wishing you a Blessed New Year! With Gratitude, Lesley M. Steels, Program Supervisor

Please come and bring a friend who is sick for a “special time of praying and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding everyone to see in his sick brother or sister the face of Christ who, by suf-fering, dying and rising, achieved the salvation of man-

kind.” John Paul II Hosted by the Order of Malta, Western Assoc., SF

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

“Whatever were our opinions about the Council’s various doctrines before its conclusions were promulgated, today our adherence to the decisions of the Council must be wholehearted and without reserve;…The Council was something very new: not all were prepared to understand and accept it. But now the conciliar doctrines must be seen as belonging to the magisterium of the Church and, indeed be attributed to the breath of the Holy Spir-it.” Pope Paul VI, from an address to the Roman Curia, 23 April 1966, demonstrates the high import which he assigned to the Council.

Question: Why is every member of the Church—clergy, religious or laity—each called to holiness? Answer from Lumen Gentium: The Church, whose mystery is being set forth by this Sacred Synod, is be-lieved to be indefectibly holy. Indeed Christ, the Son of God, who with the Father and the Spirit is praised as "uniquely holy," loved the Church as His bride, delivering Himself up for her. He did this that He might sanctify her. He united her to Himself as His own body and brought it to perfection by the gift of the Holy Spirit for God's glory. Therefore in the Church, everyone whether belonging to the hierarchy, or being cared for by it, is called to holiness, according to the saying of the Apostle: "For this is the will of God, your sanctification".

Question: In what ways can our individual calls to holi-ness be manifested? Answer from Lumen Gentium: This holiness of the Church is unceasingly manifested, and must be manifest-ed, in the fruits of grace which the Spirit produces in the faithful; it is expressed in many ways in individuals, who in their walk of life, tend toward the perfection of charity, thus causing the edification of others; in a very special way this (holiness) appears in the practice of the coun-sels, customarily called "evangelical." This practice of the counsels, under the impulsion of the Holy Spirit, un-dertaken by many Christians, either privately or in a Church-approved condition or state of life, gives and must give in the world an outstanding witness and exam-ple of this same holiness.

Editor’s Note: Reading from the above Lumen Gentium prompts me to read directly from the book of Ephesians 1:22-23:

And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. —>

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective continued... Christ is the head and we are his body. It’s a beautiful mystery upon which I can reflect while performing the “fruits of grace” that I have been called to produce.
